hey bro, if you ever get this message, I wish you blessings with your work. I really enjoyed this production of yours. The girl is beautiful and the mood that you set out for was accomplished. It really brought me into my future as a Photographer/director. I really want a DV HD camera some day.
would you recommend this camera for a short indie film? I'm planning to write and produce a short film this summer and I'm searching for the right (and affordable) digital film camera. Let me know.
The stabilizer on this camera SUCKS!! So does suck the auto-focus when zooming far. Even if you have a big subject in front of the lens taking the whole screen, it will insist in focusing the background. This is not good especially when the operator is using a manual IRIS and the other hand on the zoom. I need a third hand.
Sony HVR-Z1U is much better. I'm still using mine since the camera first came out. The colors and manual features are really nice. Sony has always had richer colors and true blues and reds. I have a Redrock film lens adapter for my Z1 and I'll be posting a new video test with it hopefully by the end of October.
yeah the z1u is a bad little monster,I prefer it over cannon. It is very liote and ez to handle. The video here looks a little pixelated at times but i think its probably the comp screen. I had elected to get the z5u!
Yeah it only looks bad because when I originally posted this we could not upload HD video. I might re-upload it in HD so you can really see how it looks. I still shoot with this camera. You can look at my newer videos and see how it looks. I'll be posting a new test with the redrock adapter.
the movie BUS girl was made with the Z1U and it looks just like film I challenge any one to tell the difference.. oh yeah you can pick at it but if you look at BUSGIRL the movie 6 years ago it wil be undetectable as video
yeah i guess you are right i got a HDD camera and its really clear when i play back on my computer or t.v but when i upload to youtube it goes pretty blurry....
excuses, I want to know that PICTURE PROFILE usastes for this film good work I want to film a wedding helpmy that picture profile uso..thanks by your answer....luck
This is one of the best camera I like it but is a little to expensive for me that`s why I bought the HDR-FX1 I can shoot pretty similar videos like your grade cam. Z1.According to the experts,FX1 and HVR-Z1U is the only two cam.without rivals shooting in low light situations.
Well i worked with this camera, and it's digital, even with cinematone 24 or something, it will still look digital. You just don't get that range of color depth as film would give you. And most items look sharp, the focus pull is quite terrible on this camera. Moreover, I don't think the HVR-Z1U has the ability to have other lenses.
hi i was wondering that can i get a decent film look with using cinematone gamma and cinemaframe mode? i m planning to make a short film and i have access to hdv z1u. have u ever tired to use pal mode(25 fps)with this cinemaframe mode ? thanks..
One trick I do with my Z1U is when I shoot in 24F with all the proper adjustments is after capturing video on FCP on my G5, go to effects and "deinterlace" the video. It looks even better. the video definitly looks like it was shot in a a "progressive" mode. not many people know about this. Actually the frame rates of 24 or 30 don't make any difference. Beyond this film look with deinterlacing, you can also get film effects form Natress to fine to this holy grayel the fillm look..
Interesting idea, I know that de-interlacing a normal video creates issues when played back on TV's, are you outputting to tape or just viewing on the computer?
i have the HDR-HC1 which i use to film because it is the same size as a DV camera. i got a chance to test a Z1U out in a store with a 1080i Television. i tested it first and thought it looked amazing, then tried out my camera, and found it to be identical, and cheaper, the colours were different but that was it. My TV is only 720 so i thought the HVR looked amazing, but HC1 was no different. but for the look and extra shooting modes, i would definetely fork out for the Z1U.
Question...do any of you know of it is required that you use an HD VTR in order to edit in HD, or can you just directly import and edit into an HD non-linear program (Final Cut, Sony Vegas, etc)?
No I was just using the same ole Sony basic DV tapes. I use the HD ones on big jobs or when i have a budget but small things and anything without stressing over audio I use DV tapes and shoot in HD mode.
It does have a jitter on panning shots but I recomend shooting in 24frame on documentary style shooting when it comes to interviews or still subjects. Filming motion, stage performances without worrying about the background panning. Shooting in low light and with camera motion I set the camera in Cinemode and the shutter speed at 30. You can then give it more of a film look when you get your settings and lighting corrected. I still use this camera and love it.
Yeah this camera is the HVR not the FX version. It shoots in 24frame mode not 24progressive. 24f interlaced and same with the cannon. You cannot get see the true quality here on youtube, but on a monitor it looks really nice. Many that complain have not figured out the proper settings.
I like it alot, I shoot tons of stock so this is awesome. Im confused though because the captions say 30f & 24f when faux progressive is only on canon, cineframe is what the sony uses.
how are u shooting 24f? its the cinefrane right? cos its not true 24p :D

a quick question about the camera...
when you film at 24f you still have available the hd feature? if yes, is it maybe reduced like from 1080 to 720??

The camera is HD but you probably renderd it at low quality or 320*280 pixels.
(just guessing)

halfraid 2 years ago
I never had that problem. Maybe you don't know the camera very well. I have no issues with the iris and I shoot every thing I do 100% manual.

The HVR-Z1U has a flip out screen wich is really handy and the XH A1 doesn't. It is up to you but the flip out screens are very good and useful.

I should add that the field-doubling doesn't really matter if you're shooting in HDV but downconverting to DV.
Oh and also, your 24p will never look right in youtube because youtube videos are 30p.
