Do you know if there's any gamba tablature anywhere? I'd love to give this a shot on guitar (since I won't be able to afford a viol for about another twenty years.
this music is notated by the composer in treble cleff (bass gambists play it down an octave. There is a facsimile version and several modern editions.
I've seen it done, but it's typical not to use vibrato in baroqu music except for really special notes. Also, it's a little bit harder to use vibrato on gamba since it has frets.
A viola da gambist(?) came to my school and said that the French performers came up with a type of vibrato that was almost a trill and that was used as an ornament for long sustained notes.
@Boom2thaBap i made a mistake when i typed de gamba im perfectly aware it's da gamba. no need to tell me i dont know what im talking about, because in my language, thats the way you spell it, da gamba, and i study music at the conservatory.
Thanks for this wonderful piece. You are very humble and the sound is wonderful. Please add more pieces. The gamba is completely unappreciated. What kind of instrument are you playing?
This is a lovely performance. I hope that we'll see more. Insectqueen is probably a pretty good gambist. I happen to be a cellist, and have tried the gamba.
forgive me... I play the instrument and your comments still seemed uninformed. the gamba is harder to play than a 'cello. While it's intense? it loses the sonorous-ness of the gamba... the 'cello is a descendent of the gamba... meant for greater ease of movement... there is NO comparison of these instruments in greatness; only in taste. it's like comparing recorder and flute.... there's no point.
As a matter of fact I have done alot of research on Baroque instruments and wrote a paper on them recently. So don't act all high and mighty and question my appreciation and knowledge. The gamba is one of my favorite instruments, and I also happen to know a thing or two.
obviously? your research and your paper? did not give you enough respect for the gamba based on your comments? or perhaps, you need to word them differently?
I mean it has fallin out of use as it is not part of the standard repotoire anymore and is played by a select gruop of individuals. The instrument was forgotten for 200 hundred years after all, and has come back due to interest in early music.
so before we get iffy with our uninformed comments? LEARN something about the instrument. There is a lot of respect to be had for those of us that actually seek out early music and try to honor the way it was played.
perhaps? you will learn something and open your mind a bit? and have some genuine appreciation for those things you have no knowledge of. if you are a serious music student? I pity you, for you are limiting yourself way too much...

the viola da gamba has, indeed, NOT fallen out of use. I am a member of the VdGSA.
~and the comments about the lack of strength or depth? the 'cello? as well as the other modern members of string family? are all meant for solo-hearing in the concert hall. The viola da gamba is meant to be heard in small, intimate settings (such as the one seen above) or in consorts with SEVERAL other gambas of different type/register.
The viol da gamba is a great instrument, even greater than the cello. It hasn't fallen out of use at all as someone else said here. The rediscovery of Early Music has been wonderful...many people are making it their favourite style. I used to play the modern flute, but now I play the baroque flute myself... renaissance and baroque music is so different from the dull classical music.
The problem with this instrument is that it doesn't have the strength, depth, or feeling that a cello has. However, I still think its a pretty sweet instrument.
anyone saw the movie "toutes les matins du monde" the best movie to me and after farinelli. Is about viola de gamba. Marin Marais and saint colombe.Look for it
how much do these run for? like 50-60 thousand? id LOVE to get one,im a celloist/violist,their AMAZING quality instruments.and does anyone know if they have soft core cello strings? XD
Do not worry Elliot. You too might nitpick if you lived in a socialist country and had nothing more urgent to do than smoke cigarettes, play checkers, and compose negative remarks on the computer for the balance of your days.
It was a nice, smarting and predictable comment. Congratulations! Some are fortunate enough to prefer music and visual art forms - and not be forced to owe any gratitude to the English language as their means of art.
Amazing and breathtaking! I love the viola da gamba sound. Although it fell out of favor in modern times, luckily there is a lot of music for it from the Baroque era. It is one of the privilleged instruments for which JS Bach specifically composed. Do you have more from this session?

I apologise for my remarks - I am guilty of similar practices, and I am sorry for any offence. My comment was unnecessary

dont say viola da gambist. roughly translated, viola da gamba would be gamba's violin/guitar. it wouldnt make much sense said that would it?xD
use viola de gamba player

Violist, violist da gamba, gamba violist...
I'll stick with viola da gamba player

@InbictaProductionzZ
It is called 'viola da gamba', not 'de gamba'. She was correct (and would be, considering she plays one).
You should not try to correct people when you don't know what you're talking about.

great playing, but she really needs to learn how to introduce things clearly and precisely. her attitude before she plays jars with the music

Did you download it? Where? What's it called?
HaMoOhAhA 5 years ago
Pieces for Solo Viol: I. Prelude
The album is Solo Viola da Gamba, the artist is John Dornenburg. They have some good viola da gamba music in the iTunes store.
staceybass88 5 years ago
What is the full name of the piece? Maybe even a catalogue number would help.

I can see why it fell out of use. The cello is superior to it in many ways, but it's still a pretty sweet instrument.
