@mremile72 "Ahead of his time"? He was a baroque composer in the baroque era, he was certainly not ahead of his time. But he was awesome, I'll give you that.
@tayrone2001 even so, i think bach would like these set for a big choir instead. i've heard the b minor mass sung with 2 sopranos, 1 alto, 1 tenor and 1 bass, and i have to say it is much more moving and brilliant with a full choir instead :)
I find it! First part of the Passion, track 27. " Arie mit Choir" - So ist mein Jesus nun gefangen! " - and after, starts the part of the video: " Sind Blitze, sin Donner in Wolken" - The problem is the "Sind Blitze" is adjacent to "So ist mein Jesus etc", and I was not finding it.
Biller nimmt seine Tomaner voll mit hinein in die Dramatik der Passion Jesu..sie folgen ihm bis ins eingemachte..( sind blitze sind donner..) einfach spitze
Incredible. The passion and concentration on the meaning of the words by the choir is astounding in their interpretation. The boys have an enthusiasm and dedication that is not often found in other choirs - you can see it by just looking at their facial expressions and voice delivery through their mouths and faces. Amazing. Thank you for giving us this wonderful music that never dies, thank you.
@fred1995ish There is noting to laugh, because Thomaner is a music internate witch operates on the highest level. Also J.S. Bach has been the the director of it a vew centuriers ago. This is passion for music with perfection, like a good actor who internalized the storyboard.
ZER GUT! Too bad Gareth Malone on "The Choir" doesn't raise the standards somewhat when he's trying to get people to sing. Instead of ALL the pop noise, at least get these "non-musicians" to sing a four part Bach chorale!
This is not only excellent to see and hear but it igves me hope that the world and its youth are not totally lost.
Text in German Jesus: Mein Freund, warum bist du kommen? May send it to a translater - but its german poem - not realy translateable.
This has been asked before, but I must ask again: is this performance available on DVD or CD? Thanks for posting This. This is a much more dramatic performance than the excellent Harnoncourt version that I am most familiar with.
@bachkirche unfortunately there's still no sign of a DVD with this particular performance or any other Matthäuspassion performance by Thomanerchor. Just audio CDs are available and a DVD with the Mass in B-Minor (H-Moll Messe).
My father was a non-religious non-practicing Catholic, but he always remarked that when he heard St. Matthews Passion, he knew that there had to be a God. He said that no man could possibly create such beauty without divine intervention. I think he was right.
Fantastic, the emphasis is just right. The editing of the video is excellent too. And it's so cool at 0:34 when Mr. Biller waits for the echoes to subside before launching the next forte.
I wish we could get youngsters singing so passionately "great music" like this in UK instead of X Factor cr****p we are perpetually served up with.....
@Clairenna St Thomas is like Eton for singers - only the best can stay at this internate - J.S. Bach himself was there the first conductor - it has a vew hundret years old tradition for passion on music..
@kpmac1 Libera do fantastic work an I applaud them. But the difference is that the singing of this wonderful music is in the culture of those singing it. This music is timeless. The conductor is drawing on centuries of faith and belief in values that we perhaps no longer "value" in our country (UK).
no, but he sings with much passion. the part is "den falschen Verräter mit mördrischem Blut". It means Judas and is translated "The false traitor with murderous blood"
Just a remark: The 3 older German boy choirs (Regensburger Domspatzen, Leipziger Thomaner and Dresden Kreuzchor) can look back to a continuous history of more than 2500 years (!) taken together (Domspatzen alone are older than 1000 years). I love this idea of culture.
