@orangetide, I'm sure that there's a way to get the serial port to send data at 31250 bps. My understanding from the documentation is that there are only a few supported rates. If you have information to the contrary, please let me know, because I agree, doing this without the microcontroller would be much more interesting.
a simple passive circuit to connect the Tx of your HP48 to MIDI-IN is doable, then you simply operate the port at 31250 bps. and eliminate the costly basic stamp board.
