Hi, I know this may sound like a silly comment considering you made this video over a year ago, but you said your apprture was set to F8 and iso 200, can you please tell me more about your camera settings? what was your shutter speed? was it on auto white balance? etc.
this was a very good video and would love to try it. well do, greta job and thanks for sharing.
wowoowwoo this so cool i love the way you control light so simple cant wait for me to try all of your tips. love every video. PLease email me at tomtafola@yahoo.com
Great tips! Always appreciate the perspective of other photographers. I would like to know what lens you used? Camera used also would be helpful. I'm shooting all Nikon and from the looks of it you're shooting Canon in this video! With such a wide range resulting in completely different end results from camera to camera lens to lens. I find it difficult to decide on best case scenario when attempting to achieve specific goals! Thanks again, your expertise is greatly appreciated!
@PhotoGav try f16 or more combine with fast shutter speed, it will kill the ambient light for sure. The next step is adjust the f number to "accept" light from flash. In general, f-number control the flash light, shutter speed controls the ambient light.
@PhotoGav When using any kind of strobes, you are typically using settings around 1/200 at f8-f11. Most household light bulbs will not have any affect at all at those settings. Try snapping a picture with those settings in a dimly lit room, and you will have a completely black photo. If you wanted to use the ambient light (the room's light bulbs) to add additional light to your picture, you would have to slow down your shutter speed to 1/30 or slower.

HAHA, when I started to watch the video I thought oh god it's some kind of weirdo, but by the end I thought what a legend. great pics and awesome models
I haven't seen a better , smarter , more intelligent , more innovative and more interesting photography teacher than you. ever. you are mad good. If you aren't writing a book or creating a dvd already, please get started soon. I have no doubt in mind it will become a classic.
You are so genius Michael. Please keep making tutorials. You are a great teacher. It's crazy to think we can create such photos with such simple McGyver techniques.
Hi Cousin Michael, fantastic video keep up the good work can you tell me you used a flash on camera was this just a controller for the other strobes as it had a gel on it as well did it fire or not
Hello, Michael! Great and informative vlog!! Other than using the equipment you already own, this is a smart & inexpensive way to do this type of shoot!! Please do more of these!!!
Good technique... I use alienbees and I think it would require more effort because my equipment has more weight . I need a boom arm for for my light stand.
Yup I agree, very simple DIY setup and it worked. Images looked great. You had me worried though when video started and you were wearing that grass skirt. I was like WTF. Glad you went somewhere with that one LOL.
Excellent video and very informative.

@PhotoGav, Basically the distance of the flash is closer to the model is closer as compared to the background which underexposes the background

What a great video! There's something I don't understand the theory behind though.
The room lights were left on during the shoot, yet the result in the photos look as if there were NO other sources of light other than the strobes.
How/why does this happen?
Thank you for a very educational vid.
