Bo designed a couple of six string electric guitars. One was the famous rectangle shaped Gretsch that was still in production up until recently.
He also had a hand in designing the Thunderbird, which has been reissued as the BillyBo Jupiter Thunderbird. He's playing that guitar in the clip above. Hope that helps.
PAUL CINNAMON blamed the BEATLES for wiping out ROCK n ROLL of the conciousness of AMERICA...I don't agree with HIM. AMERICA has lived in mediocrity since 1972 after generating GREAT MUSIC it has dissapeared up its own arsehole...MAKING GUNS KILLING PEOPLE instead of singing hallelujah.
BO I seen him twice.HE WAS WAY OUT THERE.the pioneer and generator.THIS GUY ROCKS..and he was a SHERIFF as well...his audience turned WHITE in the sixties even his wiff was white one day but THE DUCHESS?sherocks
America killed rock and roll all by itself, the same idiot white Christian Taliban were as alive and well back then as they are now. The Beatles revived it until Disco - another form of black music - finally killed it. This video - and most of the videos available from Chuck and Richard and all the other founders of rock and roll - is from the mid 60s, 10 years after the fact.
In the late 50s all the christian fundamentalists got together and killed rock and roll. It was black music. The devils music. By 1960 all that was left was pasty white clones like Pat Boone and Fabian with a lot of innocuous pap. It was the Beatles who brought back rock and roll in 1964.
The payola mess had something to do with it. DJs taking money to play specific songs was kind of a killing blow after all the record burnings and such. By the time of the Beatles, teenagers were not so easily pushed around. The same Christian uproar ensued and led to nothing.
I think I mean I'm sure as I am reading a book on BO that first time round he brought JEROME and DUCHESS but no drummer and no bass player...I dunno why jerome ain't here. Sadly the DUCHESS id no longer with us...she's with BO...in HEAVEN...or maybe they're in HELL playing devil's music ! I dig HELL...
On the other hand -- speaking of overcoming things like fatigue during a show -- I saw Bo play in Victoria in 1990, and he blew the doors off the place (it was a really emotional night: Stevie Ray Vaughn had just died in that helicopter crash and David Gogo, who had played with and opened for SRV, opened for Bo). It wasn't till afterwards that Bo was playing despite having just had dental implants, so he was in tremendous pain despite the medication. Now, there was a showman!
Yep, Jerome sure was his maracas man. He was also his "nemesis" on Bo's hit "Say Man" from the late summer/early fall of '59, which was the result of a heavily edited version of Jerome & Bo trading good natured insults in the studio while the tape was still running.
Thank you for letting me know that the maracas man was Jerome Green. In person, Jerome was an amazing show man. Bo , Jerome, and the drummer (does anybody know the original drummer's name) would always set the Apollo theatre crowd off with dancing all over the building. Growing up in the 50's, Bo was my all time favorite Rhythyn and Blues/Rock n' Roll act!!
it's also that CHESS bros had forgotten to tell BO his back catalogue also sold significantly in EUROPE not just the U.S. therefore defrauding him of his hard-earned cash. MAD-OFF would have a lot to learn from the CHESS bros as they never got caught just told off like naughty school boys now and again. If Sara-Jessica PArkerman approaches you with a recording contract from her uncles company, just decline!
This is great mid 1960's Bo Didley. In the 1950's he played wuth just a drummer and a man who played the Marackas(sp?). Both of these men were incredible musicians that added immensely to Bo's act. Does anybody know the names of these two musicians, or have any 1950's Bo Didley videos?
Jerome...jerome Green was the maracas player...the DUCHESS allegedly pulled a gun on BO once but the reasons remain mysterious. BY THE W..it's DIDDLEY with three DDs...
If you're heard one of bo's songs you're heard them all.He was ok but Jimmy Reed was better. Type in jimmy reed, Down in Virginia or Big Boss Man you will enjoy.
Good point. I'd sure like to know if that really is Barbi Benton. It looks like her, and she lived near where this was filmed. She's be about 16 then, if that is her.
the dancing is typical 1960s go-go style from americab teenager TV shows. And, by the way, was that THE DUCHESS, HIS GORGEOUS SISTER, in front, at the beginning. (hear about her in the Story of Bo Diddley by the group the Animals, from 1964, first album on UK Columbia).

lol-- you're right. It was all lip synched and choreographed on that show. pretty weird. But it's even worse today, I think. At least then it was live (and you can see the mistakes)
The Grandfather of Rock 'n Roll - RIP Bo. You and Chuck were before Elvis, and I hope your next-of-kin get the royalties you had to give up. You came off as a bitter old man, but doggone it, you were right. May you be recognized as the pioneer you were someday.
Appearing on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1955, Mr. Diddley was asked to play Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons" Without telling Mr. Sullivan, he played "Bo Diddley" instead. Afterward, in an off-camera confrontation, Mr. Sullivan told him that he would never work in television again. Mr. Diddley did not play again on a network show for 10 years.
Courtney Cox was (maybe) 2 years old when this video clip was recorded... the chick behind "DJ" Sam Riddle is Ms Benton, it was a well known fact that she was a dancer on "Hollywood a go-go".
Thats one of the Boss Jock of 93 KHJ AM radio fame here in Los Angeles the great Sam Riddle giving the introduction. Once you've invented something we all become follower... It's NOT that Bo isn't the coolest guitar player with specs...and that this performance isn't the coolest, but I gotta say that the go-go dancer behind Sam Riddle is the sh*t... I think she's Barbie Benton(playboy bunny), can enyone confirm? thanks for the Bo...

I always thought those 'made for Bo' Gretschs' were the coolest looking guitars ever made. He 'had it' in spades.
