Oh that was crazy! That's what I love about this sport it's so beautifully unpredictable, people fall all the time. I bet the guy who won was just like, "hell yeah!" How great is that? He just hung out and waited for everyone to take themselves out? I love Apolo but man I did laugh really hard when they all fell.
I love the shit people try to give Australia. Fact is with a population of 20 million and a 10 year long drought it's amazing we still have athletes winning gold medals in Vancouver and we're coming 13th, ahead of Great Britain, Poland, Japan etc. Still two more events ahead that we have a very good chance of winning gold in!
Steven stayed back hoping an accident would occur and he could hopefully pick up a bronze medal. He says this himself in one of the interviews in a video about himself which is posted on youtube (one with korean subtitles).
Luck did play a part in his success in conjunction with the strategy of staying a few metres back from the rest of the athletes.
Uhh, yeah.. And exactly how many sporting events are you good enough to compete at the world level? I highly doubt anyone on here would have the strength, endurance, and technique to compete with regional speed skaters, much less WORLD record speed skaters.
From reading interviews that is exactly what his plan was. He knew that the others were hungry for gold so they were going to go fast, and that there would be a bit of push and shove resulting in a crash. So perhaps it was a conscience decision to stay so far back.
he made a mistake in one of the turns that got him behind , but he didn't give up, even when all seems lost never give up i think is the leason here.
And for those that say he didn't deserve to win, its a life time of hard work that got him into that final and gave him the chance of winning a gold metal, crash's happen alot in speed skating.
@dirk6783 Agree on that...search for liverpool vs ac milan on youtube mate!AC Milan was leading by 3 goals to zero by half-time but Liverpool cameback and win on penalties...Impossible is Nothing!
Apollo Ohno the favorite for the race and reigning world champion said Bradbury deserved to win. So no your wrong. To finish first you first have to finish. First man across the line wins, end of story.
apolo ohno was not world champion at the time, and he has only been world champion once. of course bradbury deserved to win, but he deserved it out of sheer luck. just like apolo deserved his silver out of sheer luck. both had no chance of making the podium in the final turn, and both cashed in big time. it's called luck, something apolo has seen a lot of in his olympic career.
@yurkler I'd say Bradburys biggest luck was he wasn't killed after his big crash were they said he wouldn't walk again, he was also lucky 18 months before the games when he broke his neck and they said he couldn't compete. Ohno knew Bradbury had suffered a lot thats why he told him to accept the medal, not for the 90 seconds but for the 12 years.
i respect bradbury's perserverance in the sport, but anyone who thinks bradbury deserved his gold medal out of anything but luck is a fool. in his case, perserverance and failure is not what made his gold medal deserved. his luck is the only factor.
Arguing the fact he deserves his medal - Ohno said afterwards "thats just speed skating" it happens a lot, true it was the first time in an olympic final. Ohno was also the one who said in a interview after the olympics that to finish first you first have to finish. I do think Ohno is the better skater but on the day Bradbury was the first over the line and that's all that matters. There is a good video on here with Bradburys side of the story, its quite good.
of course he deserves the medal-- out of total luck. i see no reason why bradbury should've refused to accept the medal because he deserved it-- out of total luck. that's just speedskating-- luck is sometimes a huge factor. he was first over the line and that's all that matters. why? he was completely lucky. there was no strategy here and his long career didn't deserve him the gold. it was luck the key word here is luck. he deserved it because luck is a main factor in the sport. common sense.
@yurkler Btw watch the video on you tube with bradburys side of the story. He says the others were so close all the time and he couldn't keep up on the pushes (sprints) that it was worth his while to hold back, the same thing happened in the semis. Thats speed skating. It's far more tactical then people believe.
every speedskater would agree with me: bradbury deserved the gold, but out of complete luck. luck happens to all skaters at some stage in their career. eg; ohno getting silver in 2010. bradbury's "tactic" was to get lucky. holding back and hoping for spills is not tactical. a good speedskater doesn't expect to get lucky. tactical is holding back and making a sweeping pass when everyone's tired. if you disregard luck exists in speedskating, you don't know what you're talking about.
Bradbury stands in a queue at a checkout, with 3 or 4 people in front of him and SUDDENLY, a woman opens another checkout and he walks to the front! amazing! heheh
They could not have staged this more comedically if they tried. Bradbury cruising non-plussed across the finish line, with the two guys behind him splayed on the ice and frantically skidding across a moment later. It's just too good.
It gets better. In the 1/4's he finished 3rd but got through when Canadian Gagnon was DQ'd. In the semi's he got through when two skaters wiped out on the last turn. Then this. AWESOME!
and to you ignorant yanks who think they know about short track, Ahn is the greatest short track skater to live on this planet. 3 golds 1 bronze, in a single olympic games.
Ohno won(?) 2 golds of which there's no merit in both.
Whoever gets across the line wins the race. That's short track. Ohno won 2 golds because he crossed the line first. Both racers have been pushed plenty. That's short track, is what he says.
well you seem to forget that short track, whilst being a volatile sport, DOES have rules. See the American mentality is "whatever happens in short track, it happens, cos that's short track" is the wrong mentaliy. There are skills, technique and tactics applied beyond your narrow minded imagination. You'll never learn these if your admiration is for a cheater like Ohno.
If someone cheats in the finals (i think it's your "narrow minded imagination" that needs to rethink the definition of cheating; i.e. the fact that Ohno isn't Korean doesn't make him a cheater, needledick), they get dqed.
And before you talk shit about "the american mentality," meet and talk to some Americans. I understand that you need to use speedskating to make up for your tic-tac penises, but this has nothing to do with "mentality". Stop bitching, it's not like Korea does badly.

@jinu4ever LOL nice comeback. You should go back to school and learn how to think.

That's short track, bitch. There's the door. Go ahead and fuck yourself on the way out.
He couldn't heck Li trying to pass him on the outside and tried blocking him out and lost focus on Ahn. Late attempt to block Ahn on the inside unbalanced Ahn but it was still ok. Li who lost balance due to Ohno's roughing tapped Ahn's ankles causing Ahn to fall taking with him Ohno and the Canadian.
Ohno shoulda been DQ'd for that. Instead they DQ'd Li.
Gold was never attainable for Ohno. He was over the moon over winning that silver, he knew gold was too much ask.

WOW!!! I was like "it must suck to be that guy in bluegreen, he's gonna finish last." But I was dead wrong! This is an inspiring video.

Why do they start in a line, shouldn't the guy on the outside start a little bit ahead?
TheOtherView 1 year ago
@TheOtherView yea.. this makes no sense to me.. there's such a big difference between the guy at the inside and the guy at the outside
Brawn 1 year ago
no because lanes arent really set, like in track n field, and they can always pass from the outside so it really doesnt matter
