Figured it out! I modded your program to send additional login info (email, password) to the smtp server before trying to send the email. It doesn't work with yahoo's server though, I had to use my ISP's smtp.

Hey, does this project still work? It would seem that yahoo has since implemented either SSL or TLS authentication, so simple SMTP login won't work anymore. Please let me know, since I definitely want to try out this project!

How did you send the text to your phone via ethernet?

@caritoyjames Gmail requires SSL I think, so you'd need to add OpenSSL or some other library to use it.

@MrGeekninja, that's the apartment alarm which only makes a loud noise. Ideally I would have tapped into that, but I want to get my security deposit back...

@grrols - I'd say it was fast enough, unless you are concerned about SWAT busting in while you are asleep... and then you are going to hear the door being busted down. Pretty cool, why not use a magnetic sensor?

How did you get it to text you?

All major carriers allow texting via email. I just had it generate an email to my phones text address.
