I hate documentaries like this. Imagine a documentary about the USA sourced with Batboy tabloids. Read an actual book, they'e easy reads. 12 Caesers and Satyricon, then Tacitus. Suetonius has Tiberius, known as an acetic, filling his pool with babies because they give great head. Feasible? No. Satire? Yes. Caligula marries his horse. He just put his name in a Senate roll call, since they sucked. Nero fiddled, Vespasian had diarrhea, Claudius was a tard who wrote gambling books.
@TheMagmagoblin Sir, its impossible to know whether Nero fiddled while Rome burnt, its highley possible that this story was insinuated after the fire was done however after the fire and during the course of the rebuild his grip on reality loosened and his sociopathic tendencies became greater., besides the USA being more recent means we have more reliable sources whereas with Rome there are always conflicting sources and you just have to make the best logical guess you can as to who to read
REAL PEOPLE, if you count Caesar, and you can't, cause he's a Augustus in god-form. Yet he always seems surprised when the Praetorian guard kills him. Sometimes Caeser has someone to strangle, drown in flower petals, predict the future with birds. The main jobs are gladiators and prostitutes. Tacitus is more reliable, but Suetonius is one people read, it's shorter. It is obviously satire a la Satyricon but it shows uncommon imagination, hatred for leaders, and the pagan style of insight.
@MrMarco08 IDIOTS, the Roman Empire was like North KOREA, or the URSS, that's and historical fact that few people really know. @Kathrinoyo Caius Julius Caesar was like Hugo Chavez, he was a left-wing leader, and Augusto was like Stlain, he was the right-wing comparing to Caesar, jsut like Stalin was the right wing comparing to Lenin, but both were from the left-wing. You're the classical arrongant without knowledge. Did you ever read about te titles of the emperors? Augustus, PAter PAtriae, WOW, SAME TITLES THAN KIM IL SUN AND KIM JONIL, FATHERS OF THEIR COUNTRIES, EMPERORS OF THEIR POPULUS.
@Kathrinoyo Did you ever know that the right wing were Marcus Cicero, Brutus and all the others who killed the people's party's Julius Caesar??? Do you know that Napoleon Bonaparte was not right wing but left wing? I KNOW YOU HAVE NOT NOTICED THAT YET. Europe hated Napoleon's revolution, Germany was afraid of Napoleon's revolution, the european absolute monarchies were SCARED of Napoleon, if you don't know that so you're an absolute RETARDED.

@Kathrinoyo Franco was EXTREME right, i'm not extreme right, i'm conservative, that's all. And remember that Marcus Tulius Cicero, from the right-wing, defended the Roman Republic against Julius Caesar, the left-winged wimp and dictator. Learn history and then come back here to speak properly, as you say.
@OneHundredPoints y u no get it? xD your definitions of right and left don't fit with the political currents of that era. They were optimates and populares, those who ruled above the plebs and those who ruled by gaining their trust. None of them were communist or even close to it. Even conservative in that context is something completely different than it is today. But I do not expect you to understand that, bro ;)
@Kathrinoyo Classical populism The word populism is derived from the Latin word populus, which means people in English (in the sense of "nation", as in: "The Roman People" (populus Romanus),not in the sense of "multiple individual persons" as in: "There are people visiting us today").Therefore, populism espouses government by the people as a whole (that is to say, the masses). This is in contrast to elitism, aristocracy, synarchy or plutocracy, each of which is an ideology that espouse
@Kathrinoyo government by a small, privileged group above the masses. Populism has been a common political phenomenon throughout history. The Populares were an unofficial faction in the Roman senate whose supporters were known for their populist agenda. Some of the most well known of these were Tiberius Gracchus, Gaius Marius, Julius Caesar and Caesar Augustus, all of whom eventually used referendums to bypass the Roman Senate and appeal to the people directly.
@OneHundredPoints You're so blown with your modern political stuff 'n shit, that - even if you have that much of an education, which I doubt especially now - your brain capacity isn't even enough to overcome these false accusations and comparisons. Left-wing and right-wing .. xD yeah right, Franco.
@Kathrinoyo You hate that i make this comparison because you are from the left wing, because you're absolutely stupid, not like me, then TAKE IT, STUDY IT AGAIN you idiot, Julius Caesar, Augustus and Napoleon were al them form the left wing, if you don't like it fuck you, but that's an historical freaking fact. @OneHundredPoints Oh and by the way. Doctorates and degrees in spain (or even meso- or southamerica) don't mean shit. Even american (read: USA) scholars have more of a reputation. Get over it.
@Kathrinoyo You can call me whatever you want, i gave you arguments, you just gave prejudices, i don't care, i study it, be happy dude. Left and right always existed, things were no that different back in the day.
@Kathrinoyo I must say that i never was sure about Caesar's anme and prononciation becasue they are changing it all the time, the first time i thought it was Gaius, then i stuided that the name was Caius, now i see you're right and it's Gaius, and about the pronounciation, lol, every guy say it was a different way. Gaius in spanish now it's Cayo, but it was originally said Gaius (similar to Gajus, you were right) and Iulius, Julius, and Caesar it's like Kaisar? too complicated.
@OneHundredPoints I don't think there is any place, where the name is pronounced correctly, every language has it's own version. Linguistic science about latin prefers a more "german" approach -> Gaius Iulius Caesar (in englisch "Guyus yulius kaisar") but even in germany people refer to him as "tsaysar" which is due to neo-classical pronounciation (in medieval times) roman "c" (pronounced "k") became "ts". Of course, it doesn't really matter actually, though.
@Kathrinoyo I think Gayus Yulius Caisar sounds good except for that Caisar, it doesn't sound latin to me, in modern italian is Tsésare, in german is Kaisar, so i don't understand how the word Caisar is now Tsésare in italian or Tsesar in spanish. It sound better to me like Kesar, just like Kíkero was the pronounciation in latin and Tsítsero is the pronoucniation in modern italian. I don't know how the "c - k" became a "ts"...
@OneHundredPoints The same goes for many names, I don't think ''Mark Anthony'' is what he was actually called. Probably more like Marcus Antionius. The English speaking world seems to have an issue with ancient historic names ;)
@OneHundredPoints yeah, neo-classical. Because it became more of a title than a name, it's translated in any given language.. the russian empires were known as "Tsar", the german "Kaiser" derives from that. Only the english remained by "emperor" (lat. imperator) and made caesar a salad lol
@Kathrinoyo I understand what you mean, i know communism is the form that got in the modern era, but left and right always existed and in Caesar's era there were left and right wing, and Caesar was from the rigt one, and i can make the comparison becuase i studied it and i know what i'm talking about, as i told you in the begining the emperors were titled as pater patriae and augustus, just like Kim Il Sun was entitled the divine leader and pater patriae too.
@Kathrinoyo My original intention was to make people understand that the Roman Empire was not heaven but a left-winged dictatorship, the great Rome was the Roman Republic, not the Roman Empire, the Roman Empire sucked dick.
Got to say best thing about this show so far are the comments..Sean pertwee.. what a twat..playing ceaser..come on..I would struggle to watch it again after seeing it on tv..why does he keep looking at the camera to..rule one of acting I would have thought..ain't that the psycho of eastenders to..another twat..ha ha seriously though there's some intelligent folk on here..cheers guys..
Also am massively peeved at BBC blocking things on copyright grounds, in the UK.
To UK Licence payers; we fund these programs by definition like the banks (A-hem), we should be owners too.
Establishment screwing the individuals again.
If they want intellectual property rights & to act like a free-market business, then allow us to opt out of the compulsory licence fee if you watch their programmes or not!
Many Thanks for this, It is one of the best docu-actment (possibly just invited a non-word there!) series ever made. In addition to it's better than most, accuracy levels, It also gives us some amazing British talent. The under-rated Sean Pertwee (Caesar) and The sublime Michael Sheen (Nero) too name just two.
SUPERB EVERY RATE THIS HIGHLY PLEASE SO MAYBE THE BBC WILL GO BACK TO CREATE QUALITY MORE LIKE THIS.
RATHER THAN STRICTLY COME WASTE YOUR DAMN LIFE!!!!
@viet3211 The Celts were the masters of the early iron age and so they were some of the first to have to capability to construct large iron swords, when many could only make swords the size of daggers, so they were exposed to the longsword much earlier than other people and their style of fighting supported it's use-they fought in loose formation w/ little armor-which gave them the space and freedom to swing a long blade, conducting fast tribal raids w/ strength and speed but little discipline.
The completely flawed, unsupported and not to mention completely false attitude modern historicism has left us regarding Caesar is a tragic blight we have left those who would now endeavor to study the man. He was, quite simply, brilliant. And one of the most lenient great generals towards his enemies’ history has ever known. Do the research, get the facts and tell you teachers to go suck it.
@SirWalter215 Thank you! Caesar was only as cold ad calculating as victory required of him, he was not a sadist-he was a perfect example of a leader who used violence only when violence was called for. The barbarism he is accused of was simply the usual custom of war in that time, he just conquered a lot more than anyone since Alexander-and even Alexander inherited pre-made finely tuned war machine from his father...don't get me wrong, Alexander was the shit but Caesar was like him in many ways
p2-....and finally, around the 4th century, the Hunnish style composite bow. The climate of Gaul wouldn't keep them from being an effect and consistent weapon either, as many 'siyahs' from Roman bows have been found at Roman sites in Britain-implying large scale use over many centuries. Also, the Huns rampaged through Gaul and Germany in the 5th century and their primary weapon was the composite bow used from horseback....implying that the bow's oiled leather & wax-resin covering worked well.
p1-If this show had included pilum as part of the armament used by the Romans and the metal torcs or disks on the chests of the Centurion's uniform, it wouldn't be too inaccurate. I heard someone criticize their use of composite bows by saying they werent used until much later and that they wouldn't work well in the often damp Gaul-both untrue. Romans, from the Greeks, learned of composite bows in the Scythian form, then the Assyrian form, then (around the time of these events) the Parthian bow
This series suffers from a strange error common in mainstream analysis of the "late Republic."
That error being that Caesar is to be understood primarily as a vain usurper, general, and dictator.
Few acknowledge that Rome's "republic" was an oligarchy ran by greedy aristocrats and plutocrats, and while Caesar was heavily influenced by the Gracchi bros (google it) and brought increased democracy and economic justice to the masses.
@AndreHiltre ahhahahaha: 'ill-educated'; I didn't look up what comment to which you're, but whoever decided to use ileducated instead of uneducated is definitely not educated. People's comments crack me up
@PatrickEngSU I know pal, there are so many illiterate and uneducated, or unliterate and illeducated in this prick's case, people out there, scouring around for a debate when in fact they probably should have a shower and clean their room up.
@AndreHiltre Well yeah, it is a correct term. So I think it is you who has inadvertently shown your lack of education through trying to expose someone elses. "I give a shit" is not an aggressive comment. "Get a life" is. Maybe you need to go back to school and learn some basic grammatical syntax hmm?
Yup, I was obviously bullied at school. You can believe what you want if it makes you happy. Believe what you want.
@wachaufeuropa The Franks only populated the northern part of the Roman Gaul, and some parts of the east by the burgunds. There's a very interesting map on internet. Search for "Ancetres Genetiques Des Français, but I agree that the three most important ethnic ancestors of french are Celtic, Latin and Germanic. What it surprised me is that there was roman population in the middle of the Gaul. By the way I'm Francomexicain, I consider myself celtic-iberic-germanic-mexican. Best Regards.
@wachaufeuropa Hi, I'm reading your comments, no, you're wrong, most of french population is celtic, only around 33% have germanic roots either celtic-germanic or germanic, some statistics says 30% is closely "pure" celtic", and the remaining percent is celtic-mediterranean such as celtic-iberic, celtic-latin or celtic italic in general.
@artukikemty Do you have similar genetic statistics for modern Britain..or Spain? It seems that both likely would be similar to France, a higher percentage of Germanic roots maybe-what with Goths and Vandals in addition to the Suebi and some earlier migrations to Iberia-Spain....and Angles, Saxons and later Viking-Norman movements to Britain-Briton. I only know of military/conquest related-triggered migrations, admittedly, so there's potentially much I don't know of such things.
He was ruthless but he was also the greatest figure in history .Adored by his army ,a genius politician and soldier who in the end wanted peace and prosperity.Hail Caesar!
@vashna3799 Hell ya. Master politician and a general to rival Alexander, especially because Caesar didn't inherit a finely tuned combined arms army nor was he promoted to Commander of the Cavalry at age 16-though Alexander conquered more are, he started much younger and inherited an army that was already state of the art-built by his father. Caesar might not have been the "battlefield" general that Alexander was, though he did fight with his troops, but he WAS a better tactical & admin. leader.
@black00dice well since the Caesar took Gaul In 54-44 BC a while after the marian reforms that took out the Hastati-Principes-Triarii set-up and his legions had the Lorica hamata style of Armour which is essentially Chain-mail, but how do I need to brush up on my Roman military history I may not know everything but I do know enough.
ok sow i see some of u people dont really know sh*t sow let me give some history lesson sum gauls were barbaric in nature while others where romanized. the closer your tribe lived to rome the more civilized u were. two julius cesar had to put some of those tribes to the sword either because they would give in or because they broke promises to my man julius himself, he not only put them to the sword he also inslaved an estimated 10 percent of the population and thats a low figure.
Julius cesar was a hero, yes he slaughterd gauls but sombody had too, He granted mercy to many of people only time and time again, he granted mercy to the men who killed him, he granted mercy too any one whom gave themselves up to him. he was a roman god of mercy. He loved his soilders and his soilders loved him, with love u can conquer all. on the other hand pompey barly new whom he was fighting with and for. those people who hate on my homeboy cesar need to get real.
@truesemite...Caesar not arrogant? Are you kidding? Gaul not barbaric? They were filthy and uneducated by any standard-old or new. Rome plunders like the US? Rome was a parasitic state unable to survive without plunder. The US is rich in everything and did NOT invite itself to two world wars or 9/11 (yes, they made errors in other places), but don't deny the reality of terrorism to satisfy your point. It's intellectually dishonest.
@Categorycinque well America is like Rome in someway, just like Rome America's republic has failed and has been corrupted by the rich, we need an emperor to come and bring order back the country,
it's ridiculous how this movie dipicted the gauls as barbarians in typical roman propaganda way seasoned with some hollywood effects, in a way rome was hypocritical just like the U.S today, they slaughter other nations and plunder them, call them barbarians or in America's case terrorists and give themselves some moral superiority over other people to which nobody buys but their own citizens....still i adore rome and especially caesar.
PS caesar was not aragont like they depicted him here
@truesemite Beyond a doubt, Romans were a conquering people with a serious superiority complex. But to say that Gauls etc weren't barbaric is to deny history.
These were primitive people (compared to Rome) and they WERE pretty barbaric - even by Roman standards. Then again, which people weren't barbaric back then? The thing is that you can't use our current interpretation for that word and apply it to the standards of those days...
@truesemite You can not say anything about us I doubt you even live here. How dare you say anything about us, and how the HELL can you possibly defend terrorists, HOW THE HELL can you do that, how about you say that to the 3000 victims of 9/11, oh, wait you can't cause they are dead.
i reacently made a short two part documentary about this period in history, anyone who has an interest in ancient rome is welcome to check it out. It is however one of my fist video’s so please don’t judge to harshly
Gaius crastinus loved julius actualy was the first none record of a suicide attack which he did at the last battle of the civil war whit pompey when he and only a few men acttack the pompey camp over 200 men vs maybe 10 or 20 whit crastinus.
If Mel Gibson could have the actors speak Latin in Passion of the Christ, then surely the same could and should be done for a documentary.
I can't stomach seeing this travesty of Romans speaking the descendant language of Barbarians; therefore, i shall halt my own torment with a simple click.
@foreign96man Come on -- now you are just coming up with reasons to be contrary. The idea that any show must be done in the language of the original historical people or it's crap is just WAY over the edge. The question is if they do the history justice, not whether they made it so overly accurate only a history fanatic could watch it!
Not exactly how Alesia was fought I believe. Although the calvary movement was right in surprising the Gauls who panicked and retreated. Caesar was a general that got himself into situations where his legions faced defeat but his quick thinking under pressure helped turn certain defeat into decisive victory.
The romans never swung their gladius (swords), they only thrusted them. Because stabbing kills not slashes. So they should never EVER show the romans swinging their swords, or fighting one on one, but fighting shoulder to shoulder and thrusting only!
@millaamercer There isn't a Roman that the actor couldn't play I suppose. Except emperors Caligula or Nero, he doesn't seem to be the playing disturbed type.
Definately the empire of empires. Was the transformation from Republic the Empire the right move though. We see some of history's greatest individuals during the empire phase and some of history's darkets. Either way it is still the greatest empire there ever was and is respected and admired by most nations. They are the reason we are here today and they had a fundamental impact on global history. I mean the month of August is dedicated to Augustus for crying out loud.
@heathey2 They make our modern leaders look rather silly and daft. Look at what they were able to achieve with such limited technology back then. Imagine what technology would have been like today if Rome had not fallen. The empire that would never end could have gone on but some of the emperors lacked the qualities needed to lead the empire. It's fascinating to think that one man commanded the activities of the entire landmass of the empire. I know there were the time of the four emperors.
@heathey2 It would have been an honour to defend the empire under the command of a sane emperor who genuinely cared about the people and the future direction of it. How many of us today can say that we admire our leader? Some of our modern leaders are on power trips and think that they are some kind of roman emperor but they will never be as great and fascinating as the true rulers, the emperors of Rome. The influence of the empire was just huge and you can see the symbolism of it even today.
man i would love to see an episode about the emperors hadrian, antonious pius, marc aurel or titus why ? because their reign brought prosperity and justice to the people and they themselves where exceptional human beings with beautiful souls BUT history has almost forgotten about them because people love negativity and remember abominable tyrants like caligula, commodus or nero btw if you want some spiritual insight look up the writings of seneca he was one of the finest minds of human history
@CrazyKraut20 Keep in mind, 90% of everyone is normal. 90% of the time, everyone is safe, and content. It's the 10% that changes everything. It was that 10% that brought the Empire down, making the other 90% virtually pointless until the Renaissance, several hundred years later.
Strange.. I thought the Romans used slings rather than bows.. Also I thought the Gauls fought naked, with bleached hair shaped into spikes with river clay.

Augustus, PAter PAtriae, WOW, SAME TITLES THAN KIM IL SUN AND KIM JONIL, FATHERS OF THEIR COUNTRIES, EMPERORS OF THEIR POPULUS.

@OneHundredPoints Lolnerdragedeluxe? :D All Caps, also? U mad? xD

Gaius Iulius Caesar (with "G" and "I" -> [iu] is pronounced like "j" today, but not "giulius" as most people refer to it falsely
and
AugustUS, not AugustO - doesn't have a connection to "me gusto" mi compadre.
And Caesar and Chavez is the most dumbest comparison I ever read.

OneHundredPoints 3 days ago
@OneHundredPoints y u no get it? xD your definitions of right and left don't fit with the political currents of that era. They were optimates and populares, those who ruled above the plebs and those who ruled by gaining their trust. None of them were communist or even close to it. Even conservative in that context is something completely different than it is today. But I do not expect you to understand that, bro ;)
Kathrinoyo 3 days ago
@Kathrinoyo Classical populism The word populism is derived from the Latin word populus, which means people in English (in the sense of "nation", as in: "The Roman People" (populus Romanus),not in the sense of "multiple individual persons" as in: "There are people visiting us today").Therefore, populism espouses government by the people as a whole (that is to say, the masses). This is in contrast to elitism, aristocracy, synarchy or plutocracy, each of which is an ideology that espouse
OneHundredPoints 3 days ago
@Kathrinoyo government by a small, privileged group above the masses. Populism has been a common political phenomenon throughout history. The Populares were an unofficial faction in the Roman senate whose supporters were known for their populist agenda. Some of the most well known of these were Tiberius Gracchus, Gaius Marius, Julius Caesar and Caesar Augustus, all of whom eventually used referendums to bypass the Roman Senate and appeal to the people directly.

OneHundredPoints 2 days ago
@OneHundredPoints I don't think there is any place, where the name is pronounced correctly, every language has it's own version. Linguistic science about latin prefers a more "german" approach -> Gaius Iulius Caesar (in englisch "Guyus yulius kaisar") but even in germany people refer to him as "tsaysar" which is due to neo-classical pronounciation (in medieval times) roman "c" (pronounced "k") became "ts". Of course, it doesn't really matter actually, though.
Kathrinoyo 2 days ago
@Kathrinoyo I think Gayus Yulius Caisar sounds good except for that Caisar, it doesn't sound latin to me, in modern italian is Tsésare, in german is Kaisar, so i don't understand how the word Caisar is now Tsésare in italian or Tsesar in spanish. It sound better to me like Kesar, just like Kíkero was the pronounciation in latin and Tsítsero is the pronoucniation in modern italian. I don't know how the "c - k" became a "ts"...
OneHundredPoints 2 days ago
@OneHundredPoints The same goes for many names, I don't think ''Mark Anthony'' is what he was actually called. Probably more like Marcus Antionius. The English speaking world seems to have an issue with ancient historic names ;)
evildeathmonkey1 5 hours ago
@evildeathmonkey1 Marcus Antonius, that was easy. And what about Sulla? I learnt it like Sila, and it was actually SULLA
OneHundredPoints 5 hours ago
@Kathrinoyo Well, in spanish is César, not Tsésar. So, Zésar
OneHundredPoints 2 days ago
@OneHundredPoints yeah, neo-classical. Because it became more of a title than a name, it's translated in any given language.. the russian empires were known as "Tsar", the german "Kaiser" derives from that. Only the english remained by "emperor" (lat. imperator) and made caesar a salad lol

To UK Licence payers; we fund these programs by definition like the banks (A-hem), we should be owners too.
Establishment screwing the individuals again.
If they want intellectual property rights & to act like a free-market business, then allow us to opt out of the compulsory licence fee if you watch their programmes or not!

WHY DO GALLIC WARRIOR PREFER LONG SWORD WHEN FIGHTING?
viet3211 4 months ago
@viet3211 The Celts were the masters of the early iron age and so they were some of the first to have to capability to construct large iron swords, when many could only make swords the size of daggers, so they were exposed to the longsword much earlier than other people and their style of fighting supported it's use-they fought in loose formation w/ little armor-which gave them the space and freedom to swing a long blade, conducting fast tribal raids w/ strength and speed but little discipline.
legioXequestriis 4 months ago
The completely flawed, unsupported and not to mention completely false attitude modern historicism has left us regarding Caesar is a tragic blight we have left those who would now endeavor to study the man. He was, quite simply, brilliant. And one of the most lenient great generals towards his enemies’ history has ever known. Do the research, get the facts and tell you teachers to go suck it.
SirWalter215 4 months ago
@SirWalter215 Thank you! Caesar was only as cold ad calculating as victory required of him, he was not a sadist-he was a perfect example of a leader who used violence only when violence was called for. The barbarism he is accused of was simply the usual custom of war in that time, he just conquered a lot more than anyone since Alexander-and even Alexander inherited pre-made finely tuned war machine from his father...don't get me wrong, Alexander was the shit but Caesar was like him in many ways
legioXequestriis 4 months ago
p2-....and finally, around the 4th century, the Hunnish style composite bow. The climate of Gaul wouldn't keep them from being an effect and consistent weapon either, as many 'siyahs' from Roman bows have been found at Roman sites in Britain-implying large scale use over many centuries. Also, the Huns rampaged through Gaul and Germany in the 5th century and their primary weapon was the composite bow used from horseback....implying that the bow's oiled leather & wax-resin covering worked well.
legioXequestriis 4 months ago
p1-If this show had included pilum as part of the armament used by the Romans and the metal torcs or disks on the chests of the Centurion's uniform, it wouldn't be too inaccurate. I heard someone criticize their use of composite bows by saying they werent used until much later and that they wouldn't work well in the often damp Gaul-both untrue. Romans, from the Greeks, learned of composite bows in the Scythian form, then the Assyrian form, then (around the time of these events) the Parthian bow
legioXequestriis 4 months ago
This series suffers from a strange error common in mainstream analysis of the "late Republic."
That error being that Caesar is to be understood primarily as a vain usurper, general, and dictator.
Few acknowledge that Rome's "republic" was an oligarchy ran by greedy aristocrats and plutocrats, and while Caesar was heavily influenced by the Gracchi bros (google it) and brought increased democracy and economic justice to the masses.

Best Regards.
artukikemty 4 months ago
@wachaufeuropa Hi, I'm reading your comments, no, you're wrong, most of french population is celtic, only around 33% have germanic roots either celtic-germanic or germanic, some statistics says 30% is closely "pure" celtic", and the remaining percent is celtic-mediterranean such as celtic-iberic, celtic-latin or celtic italic in general.
artukikemty 4 months ago
@artukikemty Do you have similar genetic statistics for modern Britain..or Spain? It seems that both likely would be similar to France, a higher percentage of Germanic roots maybe-what with Goths and Vandals in addition to the Suebi and some earlier migrations to Iberia-Spain....and Angles, Saxons and later Viking-Norman movements to Britain-Briton. I only know of military/conquest related-triggered migrations, admittedly, so there's potentially much I don't know of such things.

Caesar might not have been the "battlefield" general that Alexander was, though he did fight with his troops, but he WAS a better tactical & admin. leader.

@truesemite...Caesar not arrogant? Are you kidding? Gaul not barbaric? They were filthy and uneducated by any standard-old or new. Rome plunders like the US? Rome was a parasitic state unable to survive without plunder. The US is rich in everything and did NOT invite itself to two world wars or 9/11 (yes, they made errors in other places), but don't deny the reality of terrorism to satisfy your point. it's ridiculous how this movie dipicted the gauls as barbarians in typical roman propaganda way seasoned with some hollywood effects, in a way rome was hypocritical just like the U.S today, they slaughter other nations and plunder them, call them barbarians or in America's case terrorists and give themselves some moral superiority over other people to which nobody buys but their own citizens....still i adore rome and especially caesar.
PS caesar was not aragont like they depicted him here
truesemite 6 months ago
@truesemite Beyond a doubt, Romans were a conquering people with a serious superiority complex. But to say that Gauls etc weren't barbaric is to deny history.
These were primitive people (compared to Rome) and they WERE pretty barbaric - even by Roman standards. Then again, which people weren't barbaric back then? The thing is that you can't use our current interpretation for that word and apply it to the standards of those days...

@heathey2 On a final note: "who will fight for me today"
"Caesar, Caesar"
I totally love this series. :)

man i would love to see an episode about the emperors hadrian, antonious pius, marc aurel or titus why ? because their reign brought prosperity and justice to the people and they themselves where exceptional human beings with beautiful souls BUT history has almost forgotten about them because people love negativity and remember abominable tyrants like caligula, commodus or nero btw if you want some spiritual insight look up the writings of seneca he was one of the finest minds of human history

@CrazyKraut20 Keep in mind, 90% of everyone is normal. 90% of the time, everyone is safe, and content. It's the 10% that changes everything. It was that 10% that brought the Empire down, making the other 90% virtually pointless until the Renaissance, several hundred years later.
