This glitch works really well if you have an emulator allowing you to control with your computer's keyboard. My layout of the control pad I chose was W= up S =down A=Left and D=right. NUM 5 as select NUM + as start. NUM 0 as B and NUM Enter as A. You have to press left and right keys really quick in order to do it right.
When playing this glitch can be great (I learned how to use it and direct where I want to go), but it has killed me a lot when i never tried to use it.
@Mrgahoolefan Directional pad (Up, down, left, right) on a gamecube controller it's placed... on the left of the C-stick (could be right, can't remember where the C-stick is)
@TheNintenguy I actually did try it on the directional pad. It didn't work for me. And it is on the left of the C-stick, just so you know. I guess it doesn't work on the GameCube.
Up and down is even more useful when it comes to killing enemies.
It's a glitch alright, you can do it with the original if you're really fast - have a broken/tampered controler or on an emulator playing with a keyboard.

Does this glitch work on a GameCube? That's the only version of this game I have.

@Mrgahoolefan ummm...not sure. it would almost be impossible with the joy sitck but if you can use the d-pad it may be possible.

@TheNintenguy What's a d-pad? I'm not exactly familiar with every kind of game controller there is.

@Mrgahoolefan NO, but it will be worked if you have an actual NES and a broken controller or a modified controller
