This was one of my Favorite Storylines on GL .I was glued to the screen.Sad that soaps have become yesterdays news. But at least we have fond memories of great storylines.
Daniel Pilon is amazing. He's a pure French Canadian from Quebec and he has absolutely no accent. That's rare as even the fully bilingual ones have a slight accent.
Actually that isn't a bad description of Blake Alan gives, but Blake does think she loves Phillip when she marries him. It's a bad day when Roger is defending the innocent & Alan Spaulding is widely waving a gun around. Alan does what he would give his life to prevent, he shoots Phillip, (of course he later does it again deliberately).
Also, think about it. Frank would also be "Involved" with Blake. Isn't it kind of embarassing to know that all four of the men in the Wedding Party she all slept with.
I have to give Peter Simon credit for this episode. Think about it, he didn't even work with Michael Zaslow in 1979 when Roger fell to his death, but he still acted "shocked".
Holly is the character in the green dress. She's Blake's mother, and Roger Thorpe (the one revealed in the end) ex wife. Roger had raped & abused her in the 70's. this was his big return. Notice too, this was the first of 3 actresses to play Blake. This is Charle's Durning's daughter. She was replaced by Sherry Stringfield (who later went on to ER), and then finally the actress who played her through the 90's up until it's finale last Friday.
Hey guys, do you realize that there were Two Guns used. First there was a Gun to try to shoot Phillip & Blake, and then instead of picking up the gun he dropped, Alan reached out and pulled out Gun #2.
dmsf70, I think that you made a mistake. The actress who played Blake wasn't Charles Durning's Daughter but Brian Denehy's Daughter Elizabeth. I just checked on my GL Scrapbook. Overall Five Actresses played Blake, Gina Foy, Cheryl Lynn Brown, Elizabeth Denehy, Sherry Stringfield, and Liz Kiefer the longest running "Blake".
Gina Foy played Blake as a Baby I think and Gina Foy played Blake who was then known as Chrissy between 1975-1979. Also, did you know that Five Actresses played Michelle Bauer.
I don't know what her name was, but she did play a Nun on GH. She was also on Y & R and she played Connie O'Neill on OLTL. Wouldn't it be great if she joined the show and reunited with Jerry Ver Dorn. Also, I'd love to see Jessica Leccia (Ex-Natalia) play a distant relative of Sarah & CJ Roberts who was related to Maria Vasquez.
There have been four Blakes since her birth in 1975. Cheryl Lynn Brown, Elizabeth Denehy, Sherri Stringfield, and the longest running Blake Liz Kiefer.
I watched Guiding Light from 1989-1992, from Roger's return to Alexandra's departure following the blackout. RIP Michael Zaslow and Beverlee McKinsey.
I had the great honor of corresponding with Michael Zaslow [I left him messages of encouragement after he was dismissed from GL and before his ALS was diagnosed] and seeing him at Yankee Stadium on Sept 12, 1998...about six weeks before he died [on Dec 6, 1998]he looked frail and was using a cart to get around. He could not speak and was using a computer to say his lines on OLTL. Now, his wife Susan and daughter Helena are in heaven with him and his daughter Marika survives them all.
i am envious of you as far as corresponding with such a great as Michael. after the way gl fired him, it does my heart good knowing that piece of garbage show will FINALLY get what it deserves on sep 18, 2009-cancellation!
The classic Soap Zoom in. Something you don't see anymore.
Was this a turning point for the character Alan Spaulding? The original Alan was bad but he didn't seem as bad as the second. But the third and current Alan is beyond bad.
Well, sort of. Since Alan would end up in prison only a month after this scene aired (the end of May 1989). But even from prison Alan would wreck havoc onto the lives of Phillip & Blake & later more of the town of Springfield w/ his involvement w/ Blake's one-time lover, Gary Swanson & Bradley Raines & the cover-up regarding Beth Raines still being alive.
Outstanding scene Maureen Garrett's scream is one of TV's all time best - Truly great loss Micahel Zaslow's(Roger) death he and Holly(Garrett)made every scene a memorable one
And Alan-Michael is Phillip's best man and he would later marry Blake, and Ross defended Blake's father, Roger, the man in the mask in the maritial rape trial back when Chrissy (Blake) was a little girl. Only on a soap. -:)
When Roger was on screen there were many memorable moments still miss him The show has Never been the same since his unjust firing(due to illness)and his death Dec. 6th 1998
no matter what some characters have done the audience take a liking to them and there is nothing that can be done about it. sometimes some couples like roger/holly are so beloved despite their sordid history: he raper, kidnapped her etc
i read on wikipedia that mr zaslow was originally asked back to the show to play alan but he didn't want to play alan because mr. zaslow thought alan was too much like roger so he suggested resurecting roger
Actually Zaslow was worried that he wouldn't be accepted as Alan, because of the recent sidelining illness of Chris Bernau (who had played Alan before this, and had also played Alan back in the late-1970's - 1980 when Roger was blackmailing Alan originally; Bernau would die a little while after this ep. aired) or in other words the casting of Zaslow as Alan would be too jarring for the audience.
Love Roger Thorpe. This is classic. When Alan shoots him and he comes down swinging on the vine, and Holly does her bloodcurdling scream when she see its Roger. Sigh. It doesn't get any better than that. LOVE IT. GL at one of its finest moments.
I always thought Roger's (and Guiding Light's) peak was the Roger storyline in 79-80 where he "died" in Santo Domingo. I slacked off watching much after that, but came out of retirment in '89 when he returned. Didn't this scene have a flashback to his earlier "death"? That's the Holy Grail I've been looking for, since there are no clips anywhere from the late 70's.
Actually there was a flashback scene when Holly was at Cedars a little later after these clips. They aired on youtube a few years ago (2005) but have since disappeared.
And yes there are some clips from the 1970's and early in 1980's -- just go to classicGL's clips on youtube.

Chris Bernau was the ONLY Alan. Daniel Pilon was an admirable fill in. But the glory days ended when the Chris/Michael dynamic ended.
