@martinspecialeffects The true greatness of Back lies in his universality. He is my favourite composer and I am atheist. I have performed most of his great works (including the Johannes Passion) as a choir member.
@EVZYL His true greatness is in His theology. One cannot claim to appreciate Bach apart from His preaching of Christ Crucified through music. One error with music "enthusiasts" is they like to separate a musician out of his context, and no greater harm can be done to Bach than to separate him from his rich knowledge of Lutheran doctrine and salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone.
@hahnbd So only Catholics can understand Mozart and only Orthodox Russians can understand Bortniansky and only Anglicans can understand Haendel .... etc.....etc... Yikes!
@privetgreetings Incorrect, anyone can understand a composer when they draw from their compositions in an informed manner. To say that one sang "Johannes Passion" and likened it somehow to some "universal" actually minimizes why it was written and the context for which it was written. It boggles my mind how atheists (who claim to be enlightened and without intolerance) over-simply music and expect those who like Bach to some mere intellectual, universalist.
@hahnbd If you follow the dictates of a "god", you're incapable of reaching objective conclusions as you have to slavishly follow the dictates of your creed.
@privetgreetings Wow...so you are saying one must "ignore" Bach's "Credo" to better understand his music? How is that objective? You are imposing a variant belief system on Bach and then expecting us to accept your interpretation as authentic? Objective means exactly as it says...putting your own interpretation aside and understanding the AUTHOR's point-of-view, which we can study! It requires reading stuff about the "dictates of a god" found in his writings and religious librettos.
@hahnbd Don't put words in my mouth. Read my postings again. I never tried to force my point of view onto you. Atheists aren't dogmatists like superstitious people. And when did you have a conversation with Bach to hear what his "point of view" was? How could you POSSIBLY know what he was thinking. It's just YOUR interpretation. You are really taking it a bit far by claiming to know what was going on in his head.
@privetgreetings Untrue...by your reasoning, you divorce the existing writings of Bach and his contemporaries from his written music and replace it with a mere 'sentimental'/'universal' view that is palatable to a wider audience yet intellectually dishonest.
@hahnbd So you want to keep Bach exclusive for a closed circle of selected listeners? Too bad, us atheists are enjoying him as much as anybody else and there's nothing you and your prejudiced views can do about it.
@privetgreetings Admittedly, I cannot criticizing your secular appreciation Bach, but when you make a "universal" claim that is not true to Bach's theology and intention behind his music, then people like you will distort his message, and there is nothing you can do to stop us from correcting you.
@hahnbd What gives you the right to "correct" other people? Did you speak to Bach and get your info from him directly? Don't think so! My interpretation has as much right as yours. Even more so, because mine is original, not rehashed platitudes like yours.
@EVZYL This is EXACTLY my problem with "religious" people. You are so intolerant and think you have ALL the answers. Universal art, music, literature are there to be appreciated by the individual as he or she sees fit. Stop being so dogmatic. How DARE you judge my appreciation?
gibts davon auch eine vollständige Version mit allen Strophen? bitte bitte posten!

Da gibt es nur eines: sich diesen Choral selbst in einer Kantorei zu erarbeiten und dann bei der Aufführung mitzusingen.

Praise to the Lord, oh, let all that is in us adore Him!
All that has life and breath, come now in praises before Him.
Let the Amen sound from His people again,
Now as we worship before Him.
