  • The Wonder Bairn vs Have a go Joe...what a match=)

  • @chof0319 your examples are useless , Ronnie is the best ever. Period. Nobody outside the United Kingdom cares about Hendry. People love Jimmy White and Ronnie O'Sullivan.

  • @chof0319 I've seen them both play at their best, Hendry was far more consistent, but Ronnie is better.

  • Both Ronnie's and the cheat Higgins's games were not complete in the 90's. For example Ronnie sucked at safety play. And Hendry turned pro in 1985 ,7 years before Ronnie. He had plenty of time to improve his game. Plus Ronnie's dad went to jail, that affected Ronnie and his game. Hendry is the most succesful player ,not the best. Ronnie at 100% is better than Hendry at 100%.

  • More fans ???!!!!! What planet do u live on ? Ronnie is 10 million times more loved than Hendry ever was or will ever be.His only fans are all scottish and they cheer for him because he is of the same nationality.4 example nobody in the Balcan Peninsula cares about Hendry.

In the finals he played against Jimmy White , who did the people cheer for ?? The answer : obviously Jimmy. Ronnie is the best ever.

  • joe johnson beat him in the decider and lost to davis in the final but blimey wasnt stephen fast back in his youth

  • Hendry is really in top gear here!

  • Bare in mind something in this match: Hendry is only 18 years old. It did take him until he was 21 to win the title - 1990. That is still remarkably young to win the World Championship :) Hendry is playing so fast too !

  • Bare in mind something in this match: Hendry is only 18 years old. It did take him until he was 21 to win the title - 1990. That is still remarkably young to win the World Championship :)

  • In an interview he said he used to pratice 8-10 hours a day back to that time when he was about 16 to 18 years old. He's not playing that much now. Remember he was just 18 in this match, people react faster when they're 18 than after turning 40~~~

  • You knew something special was happening when Hendry arrived on the scene. He was the best young player out there by a country mile and when he tightened up his loose saftey game you knew he was going to be a world beater.

  • notice how fast he used to play. and his loose practice strokes. alot of wrist action. Just a short pause not like nowadays. OH boy he used be a very entertaining player

  • Yeah i never realised he played this fast. John Higgins used to play much faster than he does now. I wonder whether they slow down because they are getting older or because they are getting better.

  • @CrustyFace Ronnie slowed down, Hendry and Higgins too. This happened for 3 reasons :

    1) Potting is harder nowadays due to the shape of the pockets

    2)They are older

    3) This is the most important reason : when you play faster it is more likely to miss

  • oh my god what happened to him. I guess he beame old.

  • Notice the blue trim Embassy backgrounds rather than the red trim from previous years. This was the 60th anniversary of the championship.

  • Can't get enough of this rare footage of Hendry wearing what was then, the customary yuppie tie! - Though,i think it was 1988 or 1989 when players switched back to bowtie dresscode at all times - Hendry claimed his first ranking title just afew months after this - The first red he potted in this frame is typical of his attacking style of play - which paid off more consistently then -than it does now!

  • Hendry has proved by making 147 in last WSC that he is still able to become a world champion. i love Hendry's cue action he looks at space while moving the cue.

  • The pockets are tighter nowadays but this is offset by much quicker cloths. That is an irrelevant point I decided to make.

Hendry has a huge pause nowadays just before striking the cueball, perhaps a mild form of the snooker equivalent of dartitis what ever that is called. However, he remains the undisputed greatest player of all time. Yes Ronnie has more natural flair but mentally he is weak.

  • S.Hendry is the greatest and the best player there is no doubt about it . Hendry has more controle on the cue ball than Ronie. He will win 2010 World Championship and prove that he is still the best

  • The only way hendry will win the 2010 world snooker championship is if all the other players drop dead As 4 his cue ball control , watch this video again He lost the position at least 7 times He recovered because of his potting abilities but his cue ball control is 0

  • Although i agree that Hendry is the all time greatest player...i don't think he'll win the World Championship again. I hope he does, but just can't see it...

  • @AtifKhursheed you are correct Hendry did win the World title and was the first man in history to record back to back 147`s in a televised event,

  • @AtifKhursheed lol yeah. he proved it 2010 that he never will win again the world championship. His time is over. thats all it is

  • @AtifKhursheed yea ...lol

  • Ronnie is 10 times better than hendry u idiot Who has more fans ? As 4 the reason Hendry has won more : a) he's obssesed with winning unlike O'Sullivan who only plays if he's in the mood ,when he's unbeatable ; b) Ronnie was a troubled teenager ,he's father went to jail when he was only 15 That affects a person * Ronnie has won 3 world titles Alex Higgins 2 , Jimmy White none and yet people love them more than they will ever love Hendry with 7 or Davis and Reardon with 6

  • What does it matter who has more fans?? That only means he's a more likeable person... it definitely doesn't mean he's a better player!!

Ronnie is amazing don't get me wrong, the most naturally gifted player...

    But...

Hendry is the all time greatest!!

    No Question.

  • Hendry sucks nowadays , he sucked in the 90's because he was obsessed with winning ,but in this frame he played great That's what a spectator wants to see

  • Hendry sucked in the 90's???? LMFAO!!

I hope for your sake that is a joke...

He dominated the game in the 90's, ask Jimmy White...lol!

  • to wesleyhoulihan : when I sad Hendry sucked in the 90's , I didn't mean that he wasn't good,he was very good ,but he loved more the victory than the game itself . I hate those type of people ,who only play to win . Steve Davis was the same. That's why Ronnie ,Jimmy White and Alex Higgins are better. They also play to entertain the crowds too , plus they are more talented and more charismatic.

  • From a spectators point of view maybe he's not the best...but i'm sure Hendry won't mind being called boring if he has the greatest record of any player! And rightly so...

And it's not as if O' Sullivan or White didn't want to win either...they just can't beat the game the same as he did.

And what do you mean you hate those people who only play to win?? ha ha!

What you want him to be like.....??

  • best break ive ever seen ........amazing

  • he reminded me alex higgins! So fast and the attitude how he played the shots! When did he change his playing style? he shure was slower even in 1990! when he won first title!

  • madness! shame he lost this

  • Len Ganley is refereeing Joe Johnson like he did in the final of this tournament

  • wow :O look at the speed :O what a quality break that was!

and what a ferocious talent he honed!

    a revolutionary,

    a genius,

    a living legend!!!

  • its a shame he carnt pot as good and play as quick today :( he was a true legend

  • HE IS.. HES A LIVING LEGEND!

  • @AZmanutd he is!

  • lol he had a huge pimple back then!!

this was how young he was!!!

    too good.

  • Hendry is too good

  • Ronnie is the ultimate bottler he has walked out and given up twice on televised matches

  • 2:30 wtf?

  • Joe Johnson is very similar to Tony Drago

  • you cannot dominate the game these days. If you think the standard is weaker, you need help.

  • and this break is v good by the way

  • LOL, here Hendry looks like the teenage employee in the cinema who takes your ticket when you go into the screen... rofl.

  • That plant took a heck of a lot of courage at 12-11 down in a WSC Quarter Final.

  • one off the best breaks ever

  • snooker-monster

  • Very good but have you the decider between

Joe Johnson and Stephen Hendry ?

  • All this talk of Ronnie! What can he do that Stephen doesn't display here?

  • Hahhaa, is that all you have? I don't have time to reel of the records Hendry has set by the time he was Ronnie's age! A 147 in 5 mins? Hendry would be capable but would never be so petulant to try it under match conditions. Ronnie sometimes seems not to care if his fast play is detramental to his chances. Hendry is a God, Ronnie will never equal the IMPORTANT records! ie. 7 World's by the age of 29! Wow!!!

  • yeah 7 world titles and 6 of them when opposition was weaker. wow.

  • Isn't that what makes a champion? Being stronger than your oponent? Are you ill? Jimmy White was one of the most talented players of his generation! Go back to playing cards you Joker!

  • When you compare O'sullivan to Hendry, it is important to take into consideration who they played., Hendry had weak opposition from 90-96, so you can spout all you like about 7 world titles. The fact is, if he had turned pro in 92 along with O'sullivan, Higgins and williams, he would not have won 7 and probably wouldn't have won more than 4.

The problem with you is, you are a fanboy.

  • Seems like the problem is your also a fanboy...

    to O'sullivan that is

  • I love it when he slides like that at 3:42

  • And also Stephen's great 147 V Jimmy White too in the Semi-finals in 1995.Big Len wore glasses when refereeing both 147s and he retired in 2000.He also did the 87 final between Johnson and Davis too.

  • Who's the referee?

  • nothing better shows how good hendry was he is the greatest snooker player for all time because he pushed snooker forward and cause player like o'sullivan to been generated

  • that first pot bang!

  • this frame is a great example of how brilliant hendry used to play.a lot of people forget that.even now he still plays very good snooker.hendry is the greatest ever snooker player.

  • wow - Hendry played so quick!!

    AMAZING!!

  • I have to say that Stephen Hendry is the greatest player of all time, but Ronnie O´Sullivan´s the best!!

  • Damn he played like a machine back then. Just not as well-oiled as he was in the 90s - early 2000s.

  • Fantastic to see, thanks for uploading!

  • give me hendry over selby /ebdon/lee any day of the week , one off the 2 greatest players who ever lived

  • Stephen Hendry once said that when he was young he wanted to emulate Alex Higgins and play like him, but as he got older he realised he should be trying to be like Steve Davis, because Steve Davis won.

  • Could you post the next frame please!

  • Awesome play by Hendry - what a talent at that age - Joe Johnson went on to win the deciding frame 67-6.....

Joe made it through to the 1987 final - where he played Davis in a repeat of the 86 final... This might be the closest the anyone has come to breaking the crucible curse?!

  • woww..had no idea hendry was that fast,

when did he change his stroke to b so slow like nowadays?

  • Henrdy so Perfekt . Looks like so easy !!!

    I Love you Play !!!

    Please more from this !!!

  • yeh its true its a shame today people dont know how great Hendry was

  • no wonder he became 7 times world champion... he showed very early his potencial! shame he didnt play so fast today...

  • He unlike O'Sullivan learned to control himself and compose himself before every shot, take his time, keep the white under control and WIN THE MATCHES.

  • the best player and the complete snooker player EVER!

  • cool split. this guys (ronnie and hendry) is still young! can't believe that. they have played in 20 years

  • i can watch and watch it over and over again!! hendry plays so good!!!!wow

  • Wow, he was actually exciting to watch in those days. If only more people played like this and if only Hendry played like he did then; he was fast and out of control, like O'Sullivan and players like that provide great entertainment. Hendry is as boring as hell now unless he's playing very well and that's now a rarity.

  • Would like to see more of THIS match...

  • yes please

  • if u had of said to him there "ur gonna will 7 world championships steven" wonder if he woulda belived ya.

  • I came home from school one day in 1987 and put the World Snooker on. A young scot named Stephen Hendry was playing Joe Johnson, the defending champion. I was really impressed with the way Hendry played and thought hw was going to be a star and so I decided he would be my favourite player. Twenty years later, I am still a huge fan.

    Thanks for posting this clip.

  • what a great video!!!! who won the match?

  • Ok sry

  • Hendry was 18 years 100 days!

  • wow nice video ;O i think hendry was 19 there

  • Thank you!!!

  • Great potting from a legendry player.Showed very early that he is going to rule the snooker world for the years to come.

  • Yes - he played like Ronnie before he realised that he needed to be more methodical to win consistently

  • that is bollocks, jumper. He couldn't sustain it. Ronnie can win at that pace, hendry could not.

  • That's unbelievable! I've never imagined Hendry could play that fast and flamboyant. Great!

  • At one point Hendry held the fastest "pot black clearance" in the world. This means pot 1 red, followed by a colour, then all colours in succession...was live on BBC back then: 23.4 seconds. NOT even Ronnie O'Sullivan bettered that.
