  • i have the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 from t mobile with 2.36 firmware and before i even try this stuff you need to see other videos about how to back up current rom and find out if there is a file directly from Samsung to restore to default state 2.36 when ice cream sandwich comes out

  • do you absolutely need a micro sc card for this?

  • Thank you, worked on perfectly.

  • i did all the steps but somehow forgot to download kies....my phone still works but my phone was not rooted...cn i repeat steps over again without bricking my phone??

  • If I root it, does that unlock my T-Mobile SGS2 for other carriers as well?

  • I have Android 2.3.6, how do I get su_3.0.7? Can I use what you linked 3.0.5?

  • Thanks bro this help i went from iphone jailbreak to android rooting.

  • Works for me! Galaxy S II T-mobile Android 2.3.6 Thanks a lot for detailed tutorial. Great job.

  • Tried many times, followed instructions completely as well as advice from commenters, nothing worked. Kept getting the abort error message.

  • hey zedomax, i am running stock 2.3.6 on my US tmobile gs2, will this method still work for me?

  • How do you remove cmw-hercules from the boot?

  • Hey I'm sorry but i am new to this. well does rooting the phone increase its performance as well as freezing or lagging? the Qualcom processor suck! its not like the Exynos. :( i want my phone to be blazing fast.

  • Folks with installation abort!, you need to change file name 3.0.5 to 3.0.7

  • @evei0326rjwk i got the installation abort how do i get the 3.0.7?

  • thanks for the vid, whats a htc sense 3.0 rom?

  • Thank you so much! I have a question tho and i beg u please to respond. Is there any way of updating my tmobile samsung galaxy s2? And if there is how, and will i still be able to root it if the phone is updated. I recently had a mytouch 4g and as soon as i updated it, i was not able to root it anymore and i want to make sure that this does not ever happen again. Thank you!

  • @techmobo dont do the update instead install a ROM with the update.

  • what's the point of rooting?

  • @callofduty3242 search for why root android zedomax on youtube/google.

  • Tcg4111@ naw there is another pogram to unlock it its free root means when u can install differents roms (os)

  • so if you successfully rooted the tmobile galaxy s2, does that mean its unlocked? and that I can use another sim card w/o having to buy the unlock code?

  • If you are installing for the first time on 2.3.6 and you get the installation error that he has in the video, I found that if I just tell it to install from that zip a second time back to back, it succeeds and the root works.

  • @Nixlek I found the same thing worked.

  • @Nixlek thanks dude i was going nuts

  • Thanks for taking the time to make the clear tute!

    Cheers

  • Mrgrin@ dont do it ita goibg to brick your phone dont do it!!!7777

  • @HarmonWasHere do you have T-mobile Galaxy S2? This is for Tmo only!

  • @zedomax posted on the wrong video. deleted it as soon as i realized - didn't want to give folk the wrong idea about your skills.

  • Idid this but my phone shut down and never turn on and then I did the same with other phone and it was the same thing can you tell me what happen

  • @maurito661 the phone is fucked return it back to samsung for repair.

  • thanks...great vid, but am having issue what applying SU update zip.

erased from SD card, downloaded from your link and transferred to SD card again and getting same result:

    E: Error in /sdcard/su-3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip

    (Status 0)

    Installation aborted.

    Tried rebooting.

    Any ideas?

    thanks again

  • IGNORE, since I had recovery seemingly working fine, I figured the previous steps were perfect, I simply re-did them (ran Odin again) and now everything is fine: thanks again

  • Does this method still work for 2.3.6 Gingerbread.uvkl1 SGS2 Skyrocket?

  • Got the error the first time, tried it again and it worked perfectly! Could not get superoneclick to work for me so used this!!!! Thank you!!!!

  • so easy

  • I have the SGH-T989D version of the phone (same as the Hercules through T-Mobile but for the Canadian carrier Telus). I don't have a micro SD card. Can I still root my phone without one? Is there a way of backing up my info to my computer if I ever need to recover instead of using a micro SD? Thanks, I am really enjoying the info you have on the GalaxyS2Root webpage. Really want to try new ROMS, but don't really know what I am doing. Kinda a noob.

  • After the Root do you still need the Micro USB Card?

  • @TheChrizhurty7 nope.

  • also im on a mac

  • how do i get com up i have kies

  • 5:01 FAILblog.org! ROFLMAO moment, everything else was awesome!

  • how can i do this with a Mac?

  • @livingaboard to do it on a Mac you first have to buy a PC, Lol just had to tease. Good luck man

  • Do you think that the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 will get an official ICS update? Thanks! Nice vid!

  • WORKS PERFECT EVEN WITH S2 2.3.6

    I have T-mobile Galaxy S2 2.3.6 !!!!

follow the instruction BUT instead the su-3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip file

you need to install the su-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip file

    THANK YOU SO MUCH

  • @bytomer where do I get the su-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip file ?

  • Does anyone know if the if the bootloader is locke on this device??

  • after root my samsung galaxy still can;t share wifi... i don;t know why i do exactly step on video. any1 tell me why? they still want me pay 15$/ month for sharing wiifi :((

  • @mrczwolf i have a video on that check the Tmo FAQ on my site!

  • @zedomax Do you absolutely need a micro SD card for this?

  • If you get "aborted" like in the video at 4:50, don't reboot. In the same menu go up and "Choose zip from sd card" and repeat the process. Each time you do it, you'll notice even though it'll still say "aborted", it'll have installed more stuff. I repeated about 4 times, rebooted and Superuser was there.

  • The odin file doesnt open wtf do i do now?

  • Will this work on the new 2.3.6?

  • and if i root my gs2 t989, would it be able to get update ics from tmobile or samsung thanks

  • hi, i just want to that can i download and install the superuser on the market instead of install it from sd card, thanks

  • If I Root my Samsung galaxy s2 from T-Mobile will be able to later update my phone to the ICS that comes out in early March/late April? (This update is through T-Mobile and Samsung)

  • Best video for root T-Mobile Galaxy S2

  • WOW....Bro. I dont want to sound gay and all giddy but I have watched sooo many tutorials on how to root my S2 and they either wanted alot of money to do it, could not understand the accent or were not easy!! This was a GREAT video and I am happy with it!!!! I wont go anywhere else for things with my cell!!!

  • Thanks man! Worked like a charm :) Do you know if there is a ICS rom out yet for the GSII?

  • @shariq949 not for U.S. versions, tmo att sprint will get it soon tho.

  • @zedomax Haha alright, I just had one little question though. My phone keeps on telling me to update it the new firmware, but i have my phone rooted and i don't want to loose root access. Is there anyway to disable that notification so it will go away?

  • @zedomax every time i reboot most of the icons reset and my background is reset. what do i do?

  • @shariq949 forum(dot)xda-developers(dot)com/showthread(dot)php?t=1445039

  • @Daveedchill I eventually got the thing rooted. What I did was while in the screen where you I install from sd card I kept pressing install without rebooting till I didn't get the error and it was rooted, but I still have the problem that it "soft" reboots when I try to install any apps.

  • I rooted successfully following this method, i am only picking edge, i am in dominican republic, is there any way for me to get 3g, i use ORANGE, in dominican republic which runs the same frecuencies that tmobile, ORANGE uses 900 mhz and this phone is supposed to allow me to run those frecuencies (1800,1900,850,900).

is there something keeping me from getting 3g? is there something hardwear disabled?

    i have the correct APN

  • @REMATERD T-Mobile Galaxy S2 doesn't support 900Mhz I believe, you need to get an AT&T or international Galaxy S2 to support 3G/HSPA.

  • Thanks man I follow ur step and got my s2 rooted it and remove all the junk file on the phone start up lot faster now. Thank You

  • Has there been any updates on rooting or and updated zip with a later version of the software like a update odin?

  • Can this be done without an SD Card? I've seen when I have it plugged in that there's an /sdcard folder.

  • @zedomax I followed the instructions to a "t", even got the same error. After I rebooted super user wasn't there so I tried to download titanium backup and the phone rebooted. Didn't reboot the normal way either took about 1 sec, but now I can't install any apps I get the same result. What to do?

  • @TheRealDaitokuji I'm having a similar issue, minus the issues with anything. i got the error when trying to install SU but it doesn't install... everything else works fine. Were you able to find a fix?

  • WOW after stumbling a seemingly endless amount of complete BS tutorial forums your guide finally got my tmobile gs2 rooted! Sir, you now have a new subscriber. :D

  • If you root this phone will you get free data?

  • doesn't work . i am on kernel 2.6.35.11 any suggestions or updates?

  • Max, good guide for the most part, ONE HUGE error, though.

Don't tell them to leave the battery door off in download mode.

If the battery falls out during the flashing process for whatever reason, the phone is a brick.

  • KIES wont download!

    help please.

  • Also, does this void my warranty. If so, then is there a way to go back if I have to send it in to T-mobile for some reasons.

  • Please reassure me that I can still install the ICS update by T-mobile when it comes out in March. I really want to root my S2 to get rid of all the T-mobile apps because they are draining my battery really fast.

  • Nevermind, after following the steps again, it worked... For some reason, my screen showed no errors. Maybe that was the problem.

  • Didnt work.... superuser no where to be found

  • Comment removed

  • ok, everything worked.. but tethering doesn't work :( it gives me the ad-hoc error.

What do you use (if you do at all) and how is it set up?

    Please reply

  • @andruha11234 see my site, you have to hack the tether app.

  • @zedomax thanks man, I found it on your site yesterday... such a simple hack too! Just had to delete that stupid process.

  • awesome i could uninstall tmobile default apps thanks man!

  • If I got done, can I take out the Micro SD card?

  • Did all that, but superuser wouldn't install. Can you please help?

  • @bIueviper Nevermind, I figured it out. I just had to install superuser-3.0.7.

  • Worked perfectly on my 2.3.6, but it does give me the same error that was shown on the video, but once I rebooted, it worked.

  • [Confirmed] Works on 2.3.6!!!!!!!

  • can i do this without a micro sd card?

  • @rynjsph dont think so.

  • Can I do this with mac OSX Lion?

  • @Mucksauce yes just use heimdall instead.

  • @Mucksauce yes how can we do this on the Mac OS X Lion OS?

  • Hi i followed this guide and my phone got in a boot loop and now its bricked.. would you know where i can get a JTAG service?

  • @ThisisJavierRivarola if you can access recovery you can unbrick your phone. or follow the unbrick guide on my site, totally unbricks it.

  • can this work on 2.3.6?

  • quick question, if my phone updated to 2.3.6 via over the air

    does this method stillkwork?

  • how come my computer can not locate my SGS2 USB?

  • pretty awersome

  • i tried rooting using odin and im stuck on a screen saying update encounted a problem connect to kies and click recovery :( . can you please help .

  • @YoungDynasty9193 You can still run ODIN from there, try running it again it will download.

  • Also, @zedomax, what does flashing mean? Thanks

  • @zedomax, thanks for the video! I was able to do everything, and I even got the error message after downloading the zip file. However, when I reboot my pc, the superuser app isn't there. Please advise!

    Best,

  • When I try to start up Odin the screen that should open as in the video flashes up really quickly and disappeared. I downloaded Kies still no luck. I cannot get past this point in the process any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • @bigDnga hmmm try another computer if you have one around that might be the quickest solution here.

  • Hey i did exactly what the video said and ended up getting the same error as you, but i did not see superuser when rebooted

  • @majicmazo try flashing again couple times, sometimes the flashing fails.

  • @zedomax I just got it, I actually ended up having to download SU 3.0 Beta (which i found in a Google search) then i continued to do exactly the same thing, got an error again, only superuser was there and working this time, i them just updated superuser from the market to 7.0 tested and working

  • @IamGoodloe

mediafire /?76sjzsga6bc5oir put 3 W's before mediafire and a dot com at the end of mediafire

  • @majicmazo, thanks! I'll try again tonight. Just so I'm clear, you used this zip file and followed the same steps in the video?

  • @IamGoodloe Not saying it will work for you, but yea it did work for me that's exactly what i did.

  • @zedomax I keep trying it, but I still don't have superuser. What should I do?

  • @majicmazo Do a Nandroid backup from your CWM. Then install superuser. Should work like a charm after that

  • Will this work with the 2.3.6 Update?

  • Will this work on Mac?

  • Woops stupid autocorrect. I meant, Tmobile keeps notifying me of the new software update, is there anyway to make it stop. I close it and an hr or later, it would renotify me.

  • @TheShadowKing22

    I have the same issue

  • hi my phone is rooted, but t mobile keeps giving the pop out software update scalable, I'd there any way to get it to stop notifying me to update?

  • I did everything just like you said.. it gave me the same Error only that the superuser is not there.. im running 2.3.6 tmobile had an update yesterday for the wifi calling feat. maybe thats why it dont work? l

  • Awesome. Worked for me after 7th try installing from internal SD card. Didn't even get error. Just said "install complete"

  • I did this and my phone is rooted now, but tmobile is sending me new software updates ! and when i press update it takes me to clockworkmode page ! What to do ?

  • @friendosis dont' do the updates!

  • @zedomax

The update is really annoying , Can't get rid of it. I'm using Bombaridier !

  • hey zedo, i was wondering if when an ics update comes to the tmogs2 after I unroot and install the update, can i still use this same root method to reroot my gs2. or would it revert back to gingerbread or could it brick my phone!??? i was under the impression that this root method just flashes cm and su so figured it would be safe to use. correct me if I'm wrong.

    thanks in advance.

ps. your videos are great. thanks for teaching me to root, flash roms, create backups, ect.

  • @tensaiwabaka Yes you should be fine to unroot and do update but better if you don't and just install an ICS ROM.

  • @zedomax thank you for your quick reply, and your great videos.

  • @friendosis I was in the same boat as you just now. If you haven't done it yet, keep selecting "choose zip from sd card" and trying to install until it tells you "Install complete. Enjoy!" The first time, I got "Installation aborted" and there was no superuser when I rebooted. I actually had to repeat that step three times before it worked correctly. Hope this helps.

  • @cesar4324 Thank you i did same and it worked :)

  • My computer says "Unknown Device" When holding the volume buttons and plug in the usb cable...... I don't understand

  • i dont have the kies, and the link doesnt work for me, where can i download the kies?

  • guys if it doesn't work and it says "Install Aborted" repeat the steps .."install from sd card" etc.. until it says "success, enjoy". dont reboot when your trying this until you get it working

  • If u root u won't get anymore updates

  • Hi, great video....but I have the TELUS one from Canada, this will stilol work the same, no? And Also I heard if you root it with out changing the stock os to a different rom it WILL get the update still

  • yep just toggle off that signature verification thing to disabled and it will work. will still get that error msg but it will work. Thanks so much for this video. I just rooted my phone and it worked perfectly

  • Had to disable signature check for same error he got at 4:50

  • i was not able to open odin when i went into first step of rooting ,, what should i do ?

  • How come i cant Download the KIES link? is there a different link i could try?

  • Why when I try and open the odin3 v1.85 program, it opens and then closes just as fast as it opened. I can't get the program to completely open. On and off. I have Windows 7.

  • same problem here any suggestion !

  • i did the whole root thing but when checked for the superuser it wasnt in it.. so what do i have to do?

    thanks man. great video

  • this worked for me thanks alot but i had to try to installing the super user file four times the fourth time it worked! :) thank you

  • i done it what u did, but i dont have superuser

  • Hi thanks so much for posting this video. I have a question...when downloading the tmobilegalaxys2.zip file, the su-3.0.5-efgh-signed file is not showing as a .zip file, even after I extract it. It's just showing as a"su-3.0.5-efgh-signed" I see it's showing as a .zip file on your computer but not on mine. Where can I download the proper file that's showing as a .zip file?

  • Proud to say I'm rooted, and didn't screw it up.... thanks to your great video. I used the suggestion by XxSpiderzxweBxX and installed the su...zip file to the internal storage, and searched for it in boot recovery. All went fine, except I had to retry to get into download mode. Missed it the fist time. Thanks again!

  • Another question. Is it possible to do this copying files to internal storage, instead of the sd card?

  • Fantastic video. I also checked your site and want to thank you for the great "how to make a jig" video. Very nicely explained.

I have a question on rooting using your method. I am Android phone noob (but had 3 iPhones, all jailbroken) and this will be my first root. Other methods mention having to install an insecure kernel before rooting. Is this already incorporated in your method, or is it not needed?

  • Thanks alot. After looking for many hours i finally found some one who knows how to start in download mode. Because it is different on the T-Mobile GS2. Thanks alot and yea i just reinstalled 3 times and super user loaded. thanks again for the help

  • Rooting this for friend, first time using odin. I dont have his phone here with me, so I just wanted to confirm here: I wont see the kies file in odin until I have his phone connected correct? because at this time even though i have kies installed I do not see the file in that first box. thank you

  • @blknslvrgsxr yes, only shows up on odin when you connect the phone to computer.

  • @zedomax finally got a chance for my buddy to come over so i could root his phone. worked flawlessly. had it rooted in about 4 minutes. thank you! threw on Phantom (ICS based) rom and running great. If only I could get an ICS based rom on my thundbolt now!!!

  • Hey at 4:37 you had a CyanogenMod Rom from the att version of this phone does it work on it ????
