@Jorritijzerlo It's all about preference. I prefer to have my ride in place of my mid tom, and having the mid tom itself clamped to a cymbal and the low tom next to it. Odd setup or what?

Great Cover. I don't get it how many people are better than me. I've been playing since around October 2008 and still can't play anything more than 4U by Korn. I practice quite a bit but can't play anything good. Partly coz I only have one crash cymbal and partly coz my teacher was on tour so I had to stop lessons bout 1 year ago nd aint learn t nothing since nd wen i was havin lessons he woulnt let me choose the songs. Does anyone have any advise?

@devildrummerjack I never had a teacher i'm self taught.

You just need to play fun easy songs, Toxicity for example, learn everything but just play the fills the way you can play them. And use that as a template to incorporate your own fills into when you get better.

Toxicity as a song feels like an artist's canvass because it's so open to the drummers interpretation.

The important thing is that you keep playing, and some sticking/foot exercises always help too. Just keep playing.

@Jasaxos The problem many perfectionist have when learning an instrument, is they don't feel confident when they don't have it 100% like the record.

The thing is you need to let go of those feelings of perfection and just play to the song, learn all the key beats, the accents etc. Then just play the fills in a way that's comfortable to you as the drummer.

It took forever for me to learn my first song, but then i started grooving, and now i can learn a song like toxicity in 3 hours.

Dear DrummerGS, next time you try to record a video of your drumming, try not to use the headphones, they're diverting you from your tempo- brain's reflexes are slow. may be one earphone with lower volume should do the trick. Good luck.
