Hmmm, fat or slim, strong or weak, muscle or lean, small os tall, young or old, Does all these have importance in martial art??? I've seen green belt beat a black belt in a Jujitsu competition . . . You don't become a good street fighter by your age or body type. In all martial art schools, respect are taught first, so try not to forget the first lecon my friend.
I respect the fact they want to learn karate. What I don't understand is how come they got their black belt ? I have some friends who are even yellow belt and have better maegeri. (I am brown belt by the way) I know that the color of the belt doesn't count, it's not everything and I have to train many years to get a true black belt, so be it and I'll be glad. But you can't possibly get a black belt with this level
too many people in one dojo!! these guys are pretending to be black belts,it is a sad video..no kime and if i had to stomp my foot on the ground after doing a mea geri like they do my sensei would stop, take out my hard landing foot underneath me and i would fall on my face.mae geri is no basai dai, only the sound of gi's snapping and sweat fallling must be heard..ps im 5th kyu, south africa.
@Spiral8leaf I'm 8th kyu UK and I can kick better than some of those 'senseis' who are in kihon. Some of them aren't snapping their leg back which is one of the first things I learned in Karate. Why is America filled with so many McDojos..
I thought by the time you have your black belt you should master the first basic kick which is this one. Why waste all this black belt competence on this?
i see alot of comments on blackbelts not trying....usually when a master comes to town all the blackbelts around come out of the woodwork to see him and are not in the best shape, plus Yano prob drilled there dicks into the ground before this and they are exhausted.
I changed to JKA recently (the best that I have around).. it's similar to the clip. JKA masters say: you have to understand the form, then go for speed; if you can't be fast and correct in technique, slow down....
The reality of JKA trainings are different. they tend to push for speed, giving up on fixing errors, explanation and technique.. I mean if I do something 100 times incorrectly, it won't be correct on 101 try.. if I don't understand how to do it correctly
long. You are right. Some of these people have good potential. There does not seem to be much snap or timing in the some students here. As you say, they are mainly lazy. In karate,as with everything else, we can only do our best, and we should do it.
it is about respect!!!! respect for elwyn hall, ronnie christopher, frank brennan, yahara, dave hazzard, enoeda!!! control and ownership over one's movement is the sign of an advanced fighter be it jiu-jitsu, wing chun, judo. shotokan whatever. all of the negative responses to those who are merely saying what is true is part and partial to the problem we see in this video.
Wow - so many critical comments displaying such little understanding and such little respect. Respect is at the heart of martial arts - please show some for yourselves.

I think different. It´s not about respect. Think for a second. They´re there to learn how to defend themselves. Do you really think those kicks would do some effect in real combat? If they are not with the kimono and try some kicks like that, would you say they are black belt? The real respect is to show the real Shotokan Karate proving why you use that black belt on your waist.
@mcronrn come on....look at the performance we see.i mean we surely should respect each other but blackbelts seem like giveaways sometimes.they are technically at a level of 8th or 7th kyu in my opinion.
There doesn't seem to be very much actual teaching going on. No discussion or explanation of proper hip position, no technique evaluation - no feedback.
And, for all you saying "why no guard in shotokan", we do, of course, use a guard. However, when we are trying to isolate movements to work on technique we often ignore our hands completely. Here in Japan our lessons are VERY basic; we often have 30 minutes working on punching and kicking from a static position, before another hour of basics
Again I agree with the others, this is very poor standard, too many faults to name, but can't understand why this would be put on Youtube? But I suppose the old saying "None to blind, that can not see"
In Shaolin Kempo/Shaolin Kung Fu, this mae geri would be very bad. They should hold their hands in front of them and have more balance, they're like falling to the front after the kick (note the stomping on the floor). And also the way they turn around... In Shaolin you have to watch + hold your defence, turn + block.
Meh, probably just not a fun of Shotokan Karate... ;P

this is also a disgrace to all the other karate styles, shotokan is the most spread one, therefore it is logical that it has most of the mediocre people, but that people at this skill level get a dan is a disgrace already, as you said the stance they have, the lack of balance, the stomping, that's actually beginners mistakes
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Perhaps they do not follow the belt system? That'd explain why there are only black belts and they're not that good. But I'm also surprised why Yano himself is not using his hands for balance + for guarding, etc..
shotokanshdn: Thanks for your reply, however even in Kihon practice (in our school - Shidokan - kihon dachi is a basic stance to practice all our kicks) should use a guard, not only for defence but also for balance and a better execution of punches or any other hand technique. I believe that years of practice give you the reflex necessary to be used in a fight situation, so if you practice without using a guard, probably in a fight you will not use it.
I really don´t understand why shotokan karate training includes mae geri or any kind of kicks without using any kind of guard. They just kick with their arms open hanging on the side, as it is shown on this video. Besides the fact of no using a guard position it makes impossible to block any attack, therefore no protection at all, it is even unnatural because of lack of balance when kicking. This guys are missing one main point in Karate-Do. First defence, then attack.
This is Kihon practice, during kumite or a situation that calls for a mae geri you def will have your guard up and protect yourself. And about the first defense and then attack comment, that is true and I am sure they did kata. Every single kata in shotokan starts with a block. :)
Hmmm, fat or slim, strong or weak, muscle or lean, small os tall, young or old, Does all these have importance in martial art??? I've seen green belt beat a black belt in a Jujitsu competition . . .
