indarapatra is one of the original choreography of dr. lucresia urtula, dance director of bayanihan dance company in 1968. costume was designed and executed by Salvacion Lim. Ms. Carmen de Jesus Tiglao is the original dancer
Is this a traditional dance? The sort of thing one would see in a village, or is it a modern staging of traditional gestures to a story not usually danced in this way?
in the real story, raha solayman, indiripatra's brother, is the one who fights pah and is killed by it. raha indiripatra see's his brother under the wings of pah and prays to god for his brother to come back to life. please represent my culture properly and when we do story-telling dances, we play binalig, not just the agong and the dabakan.
@insaner: I owuld love to as well, but the fact is that the only people in the Philippines who hold the ancient pre-hispanic cultures are slowly being driven away by religious discrimination and ignorance of the lowland Christian Filipino. The Muslim-Filipinos who had fled from Mindanao and Sulu to Malaysia and Indonesia STILL perform their customs in the correct way unharrased by a meaningless war conducted accross the border:
It is and epic tale from Mindanao and is a theatrical representation of how King Indarapatra killed a mythical bird called Pah, one of the four monsters that wrought havoc to its region.
Definately agree. But watching the dances of Malaysia and Indonesia you realise that these modern correographed "Muslim" dances PALE in comparison to the discipline, grace and precision of the ancient dances of our Non-Hispanized relatives from across the border.
