  • i always found it funny that kiefer sutherland (jack bauer) is his grandson.

  • @Rhunidian Hi. This is going to sound corny and cheesey, but: I am a Canadian too (in Ottawa), and a socialist, with pretty much the same opinion you just stated. Unfortunately , most of my friends are not too much into politics, and I am STARVED for acquaintances who think like me and who would not actually get deathly bored talking about these things..do you mind if I message you?

(Holy fuck that was corny, sorry....lol)

  • Did Mr. Douglas really give this speech or was it made up for dramatic effect?

  • In return for all this money i give you? I get hordes of immigrants to rape and kill me. I get cops to charge me for using the roads i pay for. I get judges that tell me what i can or can't do on my property. I get tracked by computers just incase i get unruly. If i speak out you get your minions to throw me in a cage for the good of the system.

This is slavery. This is hell on Earth. I await the day government and all the blood suckers that feed off it are destroyed for good.

  • The road to hell is paved with good intentions

You take half my pay check, tax my property, 13% tax on everything i buy, 32% tax on gasoline, i even pay tax on parking tickets. The only thing you do for me is upkeep the roads, what should cost me a few hundred dollars a year ends up costing me 66% of what i produce with my labor. Then your buddies charge me insurance and interest and take the rest.

  • why do we not have bright leaders like this?? and lets jettison alot of old archaic British empire rules and regulations that are of a past of brutal manipulating conquest. we can start by giving the natives a fair game for once!! they are not our kids to be spyed on and jumped if they dare stand up for themselves on theyre Own lands!!

  • @Rhunidian

Thanks, you guys keep up the good fight for Tommy in Canada. I'm sorry there are so many people in my country willing to believe every word that Fox news lays out.

  • god bless this man and this is why i wish i was a canadian god bless that country and god get me out of this terrible one called the "united" states of america!!!!!!!!

  • If he was labeled the greatest Canadian ever why didn't we elect him? It's a shame because this country could be a different place today. It could have been a cradle to grave covered country looking out for one another.

  • in a Socialist society, high level education is accessible to everyone too!

  • Tommy Douglas, a great Canadian hero.

  • THIS WAS A GREAT MOVIE TOMMY DOUGLAS HAS DONE SO MUCH FOR CANADA HE BROUGHT IN UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE BUT WE MUST FIGHT TO KEEP UNIVERSAL HEALTH

  • Barack Obama and the Democrats in the USA really needed insight from the late Tommy Douglas and the New Democratic Party of Canada and not from the Heritage Foundation...

  • A good man...Tommy Douglas has become somewhat of a hero here in the states.

  • Michael Therriault looks a lot more like harper.

  • one of my fav. speeches. Tenzin

  • Before this health care debate started in my country, I never herd of Tommy Douglas. Now he is my hero too. I'm from Michigan, retired, with very little health insurance. I am sending U-Tube clips of Mr. Douglas to all my Republican friends.

I wish he was still around to fight for us here in the states. But, thanks to the great clips on U-Tube, he might just be the man to help us.

  • Unfortunatly memorast your citizens have been told the most terrible lies about socialism and when the Tommy Douglas miniseries went on sale it was banned after several months due to its socialist message perhaps with a changing of the guard in Washington DC it could be put back on the market to buy. I'm not saying all Republicans or Democrats are not fond of socialists but they have to admitt that even a few socialist ideas are good ones.

  • @memorast You fight my friend...you fight!

You Americans deserve it...just as much as we Canadians!

  • American Health Care, a sad state of affairs .

  • I hope americans see this vode.

  • The greatest Canadian to have ever lived and quite possibly one of the greatest human beings to have ever lived. He placed the needs of others above his own and fought hard and long for us, his people, wish he loved so dearly. If Americans only knew what we Canadians know. We learned, through history, of the scare tactics employed by special interest lobby groups. We've been there and done that. Sad to see so many people being swayed so easily.

  • someone please send this to windsor city hall and the mayor of windsor

  • Let me guess, you failed High School social studies, but still have strong political opinions. Private heath care is bleeding your country dry and stupid douche bags like you defend it. You haven't bothered to research what the public option is. You just spout ill contrived talking points.

I bet my car that the Republican you voted for receives more money from the health care industry than he does from the taxpayers that he supposedly serves. Who's best interests do you think he had in mind?

  • our friends in the United States are spending nine percent of their gross national product—and they get a higher per capita gross national product than we do—they spend nine percent of their gross national product on healthcare, and 34 million of their people have no healthcare coverage. And in Canada, we spend seven percent of our gross national product, and every man, woman and child in Canada is covered under Medicare. -- TOMMY DOUGLAS 1983

  • Healthcare expenditures as percentage of GDP

    USA: 13.7%

    France: 9.8%

    Cuba 6.3%

    Israel 8.2%

    Healthcare expenditures per capita

    USA $3,734

    France $2,125

    Cuba $109

    Israel $1,402

  • As baldy as you have just mangled the English language in your reply, I'd be careful about who you choose to throw stones at. And BTW, I'm a Libertarian. Government run health care is socialism!!

  • Schools, policemen, firefighters, and the military are also run by the government. How come nobody accuses government paid fire fighters of being socialists? Public healthcare is a necessity, and is too vital to be left up to those that can only see ways of making a profit off it.

BTW, what is Tommy Douglas, a communist or a socialist? I'm not sure you even know the difference.

  • You don't know the definition of socialism, do you?

    1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.

There is no distinction between state, local, and federal government. It's all government.

  • Tommy i love you!!!!

    The greatest Canadian.

  • I thank the one who posted this great clip of a great man in a great film about a part of his life...he made such a difference in the lives of people then and what has been left from the work that he did still exists in the health care system that is importantly available to all Canadians today. It was done, I think, for the reason that compassion and care for the sick is the right thing to do and allows many to regain enough health to be productive contributing citizens again. Win-win. :)

  • this is not tommy douglas this is a clip from a prarie giant

  • read the description

  • id rather not

  • I really don't care if you like being stupid, so have fun.

  • Michael Therriault, a newcomer to the screen, does the best speech I have ever seen on film. The pauses, repetitions of phrases, hand motions, and oral delivery are the most realistic I have ever seen in the movies. Astounding, really. Never a misstep or false note, never once do you realize he's just acting in front of a camara. If there ever was a speechgiving Oscar, this scene is worthy. Surprising to find such brilliance from an unknown actor in a relatively unknown film. Excellent aging too

  • We owe so much to tommy douglas and by watching this movie it doesn't even begin to give him justice, that he deserves.I also think Mr. douglas would be turning in his grave if he were to walk into a nursing home or hospital and see how our seniors are being treated.

  • now! There is a polatician you can respect! The question in the States is do we care enough to do somthing about healthcare

  • that was really nice...too bad harper is a butt head and is trying to destroy it.

  • we need him these days!!

  • Note: This is not Tommy Douglas, it is an actor playing him.

  • Semantics

  • There is a difference.

Communism doesn't believe in private property.

    Socialism believes in private property.

Communism doesn't believe in choice (only one party to chose from).

Socialism believes in democracy and different parties to choose from.

Time to brush up on your knowledge of political systems, but there's a starter for ya.

  • You contradicted yourself.

"There is no difference - they are both state ownership of the means of production. The only difference is degree and the positive PR job that socialism has received."

Either they are different or they are not. When they are in different parts of the spectrum, they are different.

  • "You contradicted yourself."

No I didn't, there is no difference in them, the difference is in how people perceive them - which is what my comment said.

  • @taegdv COME TO CANADA SEE OUR IGLOO JERK

  • You cannot say that countries like Sweden, The Netherlands, or Spain became Communist and guess what? All of those countries have had successful Democratic Socialist governments. It is definitely different parts of the spectrum. To call Democratic Socialism Communism is an oxymoron statement.

  • I think you mean to say Social Democrat, which is what the NDP is.

  • "All of those countries have had successful Democratic Socialist governments."

Actually they're not so successful - ever since they have adopted their massive welfare states they have been declining relative to other countries in terms of wealth.

  • "Actually they're not so successful - ever since they have adopted their massive welfare states they have been declining relative to other countries in terms of wealth."

I've heard that the Dutch are the tallest in the world, because they're the healthiest. Wealth isn't the only measure of success.

Maybe someone else can add to that, because most of my comments haven't been showing up.

  • indeed sweden and the netherlands are doing well but spain is in tatters economically.

also the dutch are the tallest in the world because of excessive growth hormones in their dairy. half my family live there and one of my cousins had to take anti growth hormones because she wudve become 6ft 6

  • @SlickExecutiveType MAN U ARE STUPID GO READ A DICTIONARY YANKEE MR. OBAMA IS MAKING UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE EQUAL TELL ME WOULD U TURN JESUS AWAY IF HE NEEDED UR HELP NO MONEY

ANSWER ME THAT WE HAVE A GREAT SYSTEM STOP LISTENING TO THE FEAR MONGERS

  • @taegdv Please enlighten me further... Where did you obtain this knowledge? Both systems were created by Engels and Marx. For they are one in the same.

  • @taegdv time for you to brush up buddy, socialism is communism with a state structure, and communism is merely socialism without a state imposing itself on the citizens

  • @fishbowl4202 What is better? A capitalistic society where it's "dog eat dog" If you happen to fall on bad luck, your thrown on the dung heap? A little socialism is not a bad thing. Do you really want to do away with Social Security?

  • @L39L93 what do you mean? I'm a lover of socialism and communism

  • @L39L93 WE NEED UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE SOCIAL PROGRAMS WE MUST HELP THOSE WHO CANT HELP THEMSELVES JESUS WOULD SAY SO HELP THOSE WHO CANT HELP THEMSELVES YES LOOK AT SR. CITIZENS THEY DID A LOT SHALL WE TURN OUR BACKS ON THEM DENIE THEM NO WE MUST NOT

  • @fishbowl4202 WAKE UP READ A DICTIONARY JERK I HAVE BEEN COMMUNISTS COUNTRIES PLAYING BASKETBALL SOCIALISM & COMMUNISM ARE NOT THE SAME I WILL DIE DEFENDING QUEEN/COUNTRY DO ME A BIG FAVOUR BASIL FAWLTY DONT GET BACK TO ME U MAKE ME LAUGH

  • There is a diffrence mate and Marx did create Socialism it is older than that they are older currents of it such as Utopina Socialist or the diggers for in instance, Tommy Douglas was a socialdemocratic the largest current of socialism today

  • I wished some of my fellow Americans would just understand there is a lot to benefit from a Democratic Socialist government. Too many of my fellow country constantly mistaken Democratic Socialism for Communism. It is such an unfortunate misconception. It's only about putting people first and what is wrong with that?

Please, Canadians. Keep the memory and the spirit of Tommy Douglas alive.

  • America could use politicians like Tommy Douglas. Truly The Greatest Canadian!

  • And so how do you like the traitor Harper? How will you feel when he sells Canadian sovereignty down the river to America?

  • u suck poopy

  • i agree with publicly funded healthcare, but I don't agree with the fact that it's government imposed. People have died on waitlists in Canada, and countless others have become addicted to painkillers as they can wait months and in cases years for treatment. Privatization in some areas does have merit, and I think we would be better off having a mixed-system like most of western-europe uses.

  • "People have died on waitlists in Canada"

14,000 die in the US because they can't get insurance. Or the hospitals won't treat them cause they know they'll never be able to pay up.

'Government imposed' is the only way to make sure we never have such a third world statistic attributed to us.

  • "People have died on waitlists in Canada..."

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. On the other hand, you can look to SICKO to see just how insurance companies have literally killed their customers. All documented and a doctor even testified before Congress about this. They are in it to make moeny, and that means denying you care at your expense. Obviously, "government-imposed" care in Canada aka nationalized insurance, is a much better solution. And hey, it costs less...

  • "I think we..a mixed-system..most of europe.."

New Zealand already experimented with this. What happened? They had to hire more doctors in the public sys as the private sys starved them of doctors and took the cheap patients, leaving the 'undesirables' for the ever-weakening public sys. NHS in UK also experimented with that, same results. It's not a panacea.

  • This is perhaps the greatest man every to come out of north America. Long live the greatest man ever to set foot on North American land, only if we had a second one of him.

  • This indeed is a man of that deserves great respect! He is the Greatest Canadian!

  • God bless Tommy Douglas!

  • Douglas' grandson Kiefer Sutherland should do some Jack Bauer moves on behalf of getting single-payer health care for Americans!

  • Tommy Douglas is the solutions for American Health Care System.

  • well good for you, but I am NOT a SOCIAL DEMOCRAT. I am a conservative. I was just saying that I have great respect for Tommy and all the things he did to shape Canada 40 years ago. I don't what to be disrespectful in anyway to Tommy. The NDP its self on the other hand I will NEVER support.

  • I have great respect for Tommy. even though I am a Tory and I don't support the NDP I admire Tommy for the differnt things he did in his life. I don't agree with most of the things he did Except for Medicare.

  • do u think the homeless poor should be helped remember defenbaker gave us a bill of rights after the c.c.f. Tommy Douglas now if u support medicare i ask u to stand strong with me stop Captalist Exploiters on health care do not be fooled when u hear bad things of the NDP

  • Great video! Shows that Canada does have a tradition of socialism. Venezuela will show the world that socialism can be built. Then Canada and the whole world would become socialist. Long live world revolution!

  • greatest canadian man. seriosly, we got to continue what he did. the homeless and first nations in canada have been apaulingly dealt with, and only meagre efforts have been made, in the case of the homeless only by municipalities. a national plan is needed.

  • HEAR HEAR I AM A SOCIAL DEMOCRAT

  • tommy douglas was great man. we must fight the captalist who want to distroy our system. We must all stand together against the capatlist

  • parrie giant was a great i got the video tape i hope that this will come back again i am sure that if mr. gardiner family can see before hand what will be in the script before it is filmed if there are any errors then i am sure it can be corrected.

  • I love this movie. I may have been the only United Statsean that ordered it. I'm glad I got it before it was yanked over the Gardiner issue.

  • We did. His name was Eugene Debs.

  • I know about Debs. My question should have included the phrase -- that didn't get imprisoned. :)

  • Why didn't we have our own Tommy Douglas here in the USA? What a shame.

  • That bekos ur Government kills moste off them !0!

  • Given that Dr. Brian Day was elected president of the Canadian Medical Association, and the CPC being in power, means Tommy's speech is as relevent today as it was when he made it. Greed still exists, and is something we must continue to struggle against, to ensure we continue to have universal access to health care.

  • i agree we must fight for the causes of tommy douglas we can never let the captalist exploit us let us stand together
