@Rhunidian Hi. This is going to sound corny and cheesey, but: I am a Canadian too (in Ottawa), and a socialist, with pretty much the same opinion you just stated. Unfortunately , most of my friends are not too much into politics, and I am STARVED for acquaintances who think like me and who would not actually get deathly bored talking about these things..do you mind if I message you?
In return for all this money i give you? I get hordes of immigrants to rape and kill me. I get cops to charge me for using the roads i pay for. I get judges that tell me what i can or can't do on my property. I get tracked by computers just incase i get unruly. If i speak out you get your minions to throw me in a cage for the good of the system.
This is slavery. This is hell on Earth. I await the day government and all the blood suckers that feed off it are destroyed for good.
You take half my pay check, tax my property, 13% tax on everything i buy, 32% tax on gasoline, i even pay tax on parking tickets. The only thing you do for me is upkeep the roads, what should cost me a few hundred dollars a year ends up costing me 66% of what i produce with my labor. Then your buddies charge me insurance and interest and take the rest.
why do we not have bright leaders like this?? and lets jettison alot of old archaic British empire rules and regulations that are of a past of brutal manipulating conquest. we can start by giving the natives a fair game for once!! they are not our kids to be spyed on and jumped if they dare stand up for themselves on theyre Own lands!!
Thanks, you guys keep up the good fight for Tommy in Canada. I'm sorry there are so many people in my country willing to believe every word that Fox news lays out.
god bless this man and this is why i wish i was a canadian god bless that country and god get me out of this terrible one called the "united" states of america!!!!!!!!
If he was labeled the greatest Canadian ever why didn't we elect him? It's a shame because this country could be a different place today. It could have been a cradle to grave covered country looking out for one another.
Barack Obama and the Democrats in the USA really needed insight from the late Tommy Douglas and the New Democratic Party of Canada and not from the Heritage Foundation...
Before this health care debate started in my country, I never herd of Tommy Douglas. Now he is my hero too. I'm from Michigan, retired, with very little health insurance. I am sending U-Tube clips of Mr. Douglas to all my Republican friends.
I wish he was still around to fight for us here in the states. But, thanks to the great clips on U-Tube, he might just be the man to help us.
Unfortunatly memorast your citizens have been told the most terrible lies about socialism and when the Tommy Douglas miniseries went on sale it was banned after several months due to its socialist message perhaps with a changing of the guard in Washington DC it could be put back on the market to buy. I'm not saying all Republicans or Democrats are not fond of socialists but they have to admitt that even a few socialist ideas are good ones.
The greatest Canadian to have ever lived and quite possibly one of the greatest human beings to have ever lived. He placed the needs of others above his own and fought hard and long for us, his people, wish he loved so dearly. If Americans only knew what we Canadians know. We learned, through history, of the scare tactics employed by special interest lobby groups. We've been there and done that. Sad to see so many people being swayed so easily.
Let me guess, you failed High School social studies, but still have strong political opinions. Private heath care is bleeding your country dry and stupid douche bags like you defend it. You haven't bothered to research what the public option is. You just spout ill contrived talking points.
I bet my car that the Republican you voted for receives more money from the health care industry than he does from the taxpayers that he supposedly serves. Who's best interests do you think he had in mind?
our friends in the United States are spending nine percent of their gross national product—and they get a higher per capita gross national product than we do—they spend nine percent of their gross national product on healthcare, and 34 million of their people have no healthcare coverage. And in Canada, we spend seven percent of our gross national product, and every man, woman and child in Canada is covered under Medicare. -- TOMMY DOUGLAS 1983
As baldy as you have just mangled the English language in your reply, I'd be careful about who you choose to throw stones at. And BTW, I'm a Libertarian. Government run health care is socialism!!
Schools, policemen, firefighters, and the military are also run by the government. How come nobody accuses government paid fire fighters of being socialists? Public healthcare is a necessity, and is too vital to be left up to those that can only see ways of making a profit off it.
BTW, what is Tommy Douglas, a communist or a socialist? I'm not sure you even know the difference.
In the US, Schools and the Police/Fire Departments are run within the State and Local Gov't, Which is what the US Constitution intended and is, by definition, is the opposite of Socialism. LOL, you don't even know what what Socialism is do you dude? You just come to youtube looking for people to argue with because you're bored and don't have any friends. LOL
You don't know the definition of socialism, do you?
1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.
There is no distinction between state, local, and federal government. It's all government.
I thank the one who posted this great clip of a great man in a great film about a part of his life...he made such a difference in the lives of people then and what has been left from the work that he did still exists in the health care system that is importantly available to all Canadians today. It was done, I think, for the reason that compassion and care for the sick is the right thing to do and allows many to regain enough health to be productive contributing citizens again. Win-win. :)
Michael Therriault, a newcomer to the screen, does the best speech I have ever seen on film. The pauses, repetitions of phrases, hand motions, and oral delivery are the most realistic I have ever seen in the movies. Astounding, really. Never a misstep or false note, never once do you realize he's just acting in front of a camara. If there ever was a speechgiving Oscar, this scene is worthy. Surprising to find such brilliance from an unknown actor in a relatively unknown film. Excellent aging too
We owe so much to tommy douglas and by watching this movie it doesn't even begin to give him justice, that he deserves.I also think Mr. douglas would be turning in his grave if he were to walk into a nursing home or hospital and see how our seniors are being treated.

That "difference" is a conceptual one only. Up until the 20th century, when the failures of communism became too terrible for any sane individual to associate with, the terms socialism and communism were synonymous. Karl Marx, the founder of communism, used the terms interchangably. There is no true difference between the two - socialism is just communism dressed up in a better P.R. job. They are BOTH state ownership of the means of production.

Either they are different or they are not. When they are in different parts of the spectrum, they are different.
You cannot say that countries like Sweden, The Netherlands, or Spain became Communist and guess what? All of those countries have had successful Democratic Socialist governments. It is definitely different parts of the spectrum. To call Democratic Socialism Communism is an oxymoron statement.

This man was a traitor to the Canadian public and his legacy is that of a socialist cancer upon the free society of Canada. The idea that government can do ANYTHING efficiently is so absurd it would be humorous if it didn't have such tragic human consequences. Down with socialism!
i agree with publicly funded healthcare, but I don't agree with the fact that it's government imposed. People have died on waitlists in Canada, and countless others have become addicted to painkillers as they can wait months and in cases years for treatment. Privatization in some areas does have merit, and I think we would be better off having a mixed-system like most of western-europe uses.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. On the other hand, you can look to SICKO to see just how insurance companies have literally killed their customers. All documented and a doctor even testified before Congress about this. They are in it to make moeny, and that means denying you care at your expense. Obviously, "government-imposed" care in Canada aka nationalized insurance, is a much better solution. And hey, it costs less...
New Zealand already experimented with this. What happened? They had to hire more doctors in the public sys as the private sys starved them of doctors and took the cheap patients, leaving the 'undesirables' for the ever-weakening public sys. NHS in UK also experimented with that, same results. It's not a panacea.
"and I think we would be better off having a mixed-system like most of western-europe uses."
As for France which has the #1 system in the world- unlike Canada- they cover dentistry, eye care, health care, home care, and medicines, which people continually neglect to point out: so yes, perhaps we *should* go that route!
This is perhaps the greatest man every to come out of north America. Long live the greatest man ever to set foot on North American land, only if we had a second one of him.
well good for you, but I am NOT a SOCIAL DEMOCRAT. I am a conservative. I was just saying that I have great respect for Tommy and all the things he did to shape Canada 40 years ago. I don't what to be disrespectful in anyway to Tommy. The NDP its self on the other hand I will NEVER support.
I have great respect for Tommy. even though I am a Tory and I don't support the NDP I admire Tommy for the differnt things he did in his life. I don't agree with most of the things he did Except for Medicare.
do u think the homeless poor should be helped remember defenbaker gave us a bill of rights after the c.c.f. Tommy Douglas now if u support medicare i ask u to stand strong with me stop Captalist Exploiters on health care do not be fooled when u hear bad things of the NDP
Great video! Shows that Canada does have a tradition of socialism. Venezuela will show the world that socialism can be built. Then Canada and the whole world would become socialist. Long live world revolution!
greatest canadian man. seriosly, we got to continue what he did. the homeless and first nations in canada have been apaulingly dealt with, and only meagre efforts have been made, in the case of the homeless only by municipalities. a national plan is needed.
parrie giant was a great i got the video tape i hope that this will come back again i am sure that if mr. gardiner family can see before hand what will be in the script before it is filmed if there are any errors then i am sure it can be corrected.
Given that Dr. Brian Day was elected president of the Canadian Medical Association, and the CPC being in power, means Tommy's speech is as relevent today as it was when he made it. Greed still exists, and is something we must continue to struggle against, to ensure we continue to have universal access to health care.
i always found it funny that kiefer sutherland (jack bauer) is his grandson.

There is a difference.
Communism doesn't believe in private property.
Socialism believes in private property.
Communism doesn't believe in choice (only one party to chose from).
Socialism believes in democracy and different parties to choose from.

well good for you, but I am NOT a SOCIAL DEMOCRAT.

I love this movie. I may have been the only United Statsean that ordered it. I'm glad I got it before it was yanked over the Gardiner issue.

We did. His name was Eugene Debs.

I know about Debs. My question should have included the phrase -- that didn't get imprisoned. :)

Given that Dr. Brian Day was elected president of the Canadian Medical Association, and the CPC being in power, means Tommy's speech is as relevent today as it was when he made it. Greed still exists, and is something we must continue to struggle against, to ensure we continue to have universal access to health care.
