omg I love Quasi in both versions :)! I hate phoebus in this version, i love him in the disney one, i hate frollo in this one, i like him in the disney one, i like esmerelda in this one, i love esmerelda in the disney one.
Wow, Anthony Hopkins really did this role justice. His deformities may be a bit fake looking, but his acting really shines through. He portrays the character so well. It makes me so sad for him. :( And whoever played Frollo is magnificent as well! Passionate, dark and brooding, perfection! This may be one of the best adaptations of the book I've seen.
ya know, i bet that if he never tryed to like "rape" her and gave her some space, but still gave his subtle hints that he liked her...he'd have a WAY better chance...but he had to go to the " i must coress you" or the *jumps on top of her* " i must have you" thing...lol he had to go all jake the rape-her on her.....shame.
Given the limited budget and the time in which this was made, they do a pretty good job of recreating medieval city life, complete with mud and vermin.
I'm guessing quasimodo never ends up with esmerald in any of the film adaptions... right? I guess it's more realistic that why, but I myself would chose quasimodo over anyone else...
Thankyou IndigoReflections I haven't read the book and wow I didn't know Hugo was inspired by stories and people that he met in Paris I wish Esmeralda and Quasimodo existed but they didn't I actually like the Walt Disney Esmeralda better than this Esmeralda because in the walt disney version Esmeralda was smart this one however is a bit naive
Wow... Quasimodo's speech to Esmeralda is very much like the original. In the book, he says, "Never till now have I been so aware of my ugliness. When I compare myself to you, I pity myself indeed, poor unhappy monster that I am. I must look a beast to you. Tell me. You, you are a ray of sunlight, a drop of dew, the song of a bird! But I, I am something frightful, neither man nor beast, a something that's harder, more trod upon, and more unshapely than a stone."
Oh, HugosNotreDame you are amazing! Thank you!!! The attemped "rape" scene was incredabal! This Frollo is so well portrayed. So diffrent than any other! Alot like the compassionate book version of him! He speaks of love, his feelings are not of lust alone....:)~<3

I don't know where you're all coming from. I think Anthony Hopkins' performance here is an absolute embarrassment. His acting, his East London accent and that totally stupid looking make up job leave a lot to be desired.
Besides, read the book and pay careful attention, and you'll find he is actually just desperately in love. He is a very complicated character, hard to split the line of love and lust. Hes still my favorite, out of all I know. Edward Cullen can kiss his feet when it comes to true love.
erik is basically a combination of quasimodos tragedy with frollos malevolence. both frollo and erik say they love the girl but act in a manner of malevolent obsession.
Actually that's not true - to a certain extent. Erik's love for Christine was sincere, but after he found out she loved Raoul de Chagny that's when he went out of control. But Erik never lusted for Christine, as Frollo did. He truly loved her for her mind, looks, spirit - that's why in the end, when she offers to become his wife - he feels remorse for what he's done to her, to Raoul, and the other people he harmed and as a result, he let's her go with Raoul and dies quietly. :( Frollo did not.
Its obvious youre better versed with the literature. Myself im better with the various film versions of both stories. My favourite version of the phantom is the 1990 one with teri polo as christine and this version of hunchback is also the best. Both are the truest to the novel
erik really does love christine thats why he lets her go even though she chose to stay. he killed because thats what he felt he had to do to survive to deter people from trying to find him. xxxx
Yes Erik really did love Christine, which was why - unlike Frollo - he let her go off with the man she loved more, Raoul. Essentially, the Phantom is very much like that of Quasimodo.
This movie/story is the perfect example of finding the true beauty in a human being; even if they may appear ugly on the outside. There are just no words to describe such a masterpiece...it's almost as if I can feel my heart breaking over his pain
i'm crying!!! This scene is so beautiful!! I am actually crying. My mascara is running all down my face. I love the way he says " I would give my life for you." It's so sweet xx
It's interesting to compare this interaction between Frollo and Esmeralda with the one in the dungeon. In the dungeon, he was so much more...vulnerable, almost on the verge of tears. In this scene, he's much more in control of himself. I wonder what caused the sudden change in mentality?
If Quasi is deaf, shouldn't he have more difficulty pronouncing his words? Although I know he wasn't deaf from birth so maybe it's different. No offense intended to anyone, just an observation.
Well, not to give alot of the plot of the novel away, when Frollo found Quasimodo as a toddler, he was gibbering away in another language. And then after Quasimodo became deaf, Frollo taught him how to read lips and to judge what a person's saying by their body language and how their eyes look.
Thanks. I need to read the book I think - everyone seems to say it offers a lot more than any of the films, which I suppose is obvious since it's the original format.
ok that's a bad way of saying it but you know what i mean and to think i read on a dicussion form about this novel once that someone thought that it bore no importence to todays society well i say it dose i mean people haven't grown out racisem or discrimanation against people with deformaties and there are still people like Phoebus in the world men and women.
so this novel (sad to say) really reflects the twenty first centuary i think anyway
I know i should be just enjoying this as fiction and i do i mean Frollo is a great fictional character and of course Quasimodo
(the best one). But we still have thess problems today i mean look at priests their not allowed marry and thats one of the main reasons Frollo went insane in the end.
We still have people losing their children (Sister Guddle i'm refering to). And we still have asswholes like Jeah Frollo on our streets. BUT WHY?
is it possible that society will never be fixed, that we will still have thees problems in 1000s of years?
ok now i'm finished i just did that cause when i watch this movie or any adaptation of the novel or read the novel i realize how real it is
*shudders* but it's still a great novel i'm not attacking it actually i think everyone should read the novel once before they die since it has such modren themes in it.
on another note it's pretty sick society sometimes i mean forcing someone to be soicaly icolated and spend their life living in a belltower (whole church of Notre dame)
because they happen to be physicaly different. It's sad but deformed people probaly don't get it eassy in some places today agreed?
P.S. I left this kind of message on the musical based on this novel because i'm horrifed by the treatment of Quasimodo
