unless your slated to go one chuck or are guard/reserve be prepared to wait 2 to 3 months for your second set of classes. i am guard and i got about a month left before i finish ait, and i cannot wait for that day. so speaking from a point of view that is purely from my training environment, good luck with your extended stay in tradoc.
was at ft gordon with some 25Bs. one of the chicks got assigned to a stateside unit doing tech support for a really boring program. 25S you would have to know more.
@dmorris41 i chose 25S because its training you generally cant get in the civilian sector. Also the assignments can vary. Life at a tac site and a strat site are very different.
Commenting on the video itself, not the MOS, I'd say the satellite footage they used was even lamer than the part at the end where we see people in 80s clothes in an office. Google "DSCS3" and "Boeing WGS" to see what we really use. We have the reliable Cold War-era DSCS3 and the new rock-steady hotness WGS.
Just one thing to keep in mind. Instructors are very well versed in what was true 10 years ago. Websites can be from years ago as well. When in doubt, find the updated TM or call the WSOC.
For Tac and Strat guys your daily job runs like this: Tac guys make sure the equipment is good, the settings are right, the antenna is pointed right, and the connection is good for your site, while you're out in the field. Strat guys have to check & monitor the equipment connected to the the 10-50 Tac sites they support. Controllers have to monitor & troubleshoot connections for all their Strat and Tac sites, monitor satellites, compile reports, and check equipment, among other things. Busy busy
Recruiters usually know nothing about this job. New 25 Sierras should know we have 3 types of Sierra assignments: Strategic, Tactical, and Controller.
It's best to think of us like the cable company. Say you're in the middle of Afghanistan and you need your video, your phone, and your data connection. Comcast doesn't deliver there; US Army SATCOM does.
Tactical sites are the small green antennas in the field. Strategic sites are the white antennas connecting them to the network.
The training environment is harder than the job. Yes, you'll be working with electronic equipment and you most likely won't be kicking in doors, but you never know where you'll be sent so I find it's best to just be ready. If you're in the delayed entry program and you have your AKO login get on LandWarNet and look up the 25S course material. There's no reason you shouldn't get mid to high 90s on every exam in the course if you're a computer guy.
lol t3kni9e is pretty much rite about everything. if you guys have any questions about this ait i can answer them to tje best of my ability without breaking any rules.
@csk0bw Id like a non bias review of the job please, like what is an ordinary day? Can it be fun or is it just sitting bored watching a monitor for a problem? I'm not the out of shape nerd T3kni9e describes but I do like computers/computer games. Not everyone can run around with a rifle, some people need to repair/maintain/setup stuff or the army can't function. On top of that, infantry will not get you a job if you want to stop after 4-8 years, whereas the non combat mos often will.
Anyone with experience in this MOS or other 25 series MOS', if you could fill me in with some insight of an "average" day in the life of a signal soldier. I'm 11B right now, been 11b for 3 1/2 years and OEF deployment, and i'm just looking for a change, start a new field/ army life if you will. Any experienced feedback would be greatly appreciated!
@dustin720 I was a 25U, and to be honest that one of the best 25 series MOS. Its the jack of all trades MOS, you train in all of the 25 series jobs and you can be sent to any unit and any type of unit. Most of the 25 series jobs you will be with commo units and while thats fine it gets old being with the same units, at least with a 25U mos you can move between almost all units. Go from an MP unit to a Mechanized unit.
Anyone who picked this MOS, you are lucky yet also very unlucky. 25S is a good civilian job and its also a easy job in the army and people will want to be your friend because of the things you can get them downrange. But you will HATE and absolutey regret your decision when you get to AIT. 95% at AIT want out of the army as soon as possible and a big portion are pissed they picked this job. Aso after E-6 it gets very hard to promote. HF :)
@marcus502414 Don't know if you picked your job or not but. The thing is it really depends on what you like and what your ultimate goal in the army is. In AIT (Advanced Individual Training) alot of people got sick of it because they are fresh out of basic and are all hooah hooah about army. Problem is the people who do like the job are world of warcraft nerds. But, because they're WOW loving nerds, they end up liking the job but hating the army because its to physically demanding at times.
@marcus502414 So basically, people who liked the SATCOM job, usually hated the ARMY because they are away from their family, they're being told to sweep, mop, pull fireguard shift, pull cq duty, etc. They're made to stay at work late, they're not approved leave, they can't pass a PT test so they're not given the priviledges of other soldeiers, etc. To be blunt, the nerds who like the job, are too pussy to deal with the army and just complain and whine.
@marcus502414 The ones who like the ARMY and like being a SOLDIER end up hating the job because there's nothing "soldier" about this job. You sit in a room and stare a monitors and if someone calls you, then you help them with their SATCOM problems or whatever they need. If you're tactical you set up the antenna then "monitor" it. You don't do actual ARMY shit. Don't believe me? Then go for it, but you will see 90-95% of 25S quit the army after their term.
I had a 63 and I got this job. You need to have at least a 115 on you're st score which is electronics. I go to fort sill in 2 months than 28 weeks at fort gordon georgia. Its going to be quite the adventure.
This would be fun to do. I probably wouldn't be able to join because of my hurt back, overweight, flat feet, and steel rod in my leg. talk about destined to not be in the military LOl.
And i was stationed at Ft. Drum with 10th Mnt Div. from 03-08. the people in your platoon and company are usually pretty chill and not just meat heads like in other MOS's. I cant tell you enough how little we actually trained from day to day. you power up your equipment once a week to see if the lights still work and the rest of the week up spend your time trying to stay away from the company area. you spend a total of 2 (maybe 3) months in the field a year but all you do is sit on ur ass.
@Fischkid2 Well since you don't do shit, can I take more college classes then the usual enlisted personnel? Like do I get to choose to do things while I set on my ass or do we have to do stupid shit like just walk around being barked orders to do shit like paint a shed (lol) or something else redundant like that? I would like you to post an average day in the life of a 25S, if you don't mind.
@Camm0Blue The Intel jobs aren't like infantry. Infantry is grunt work for people who score under 50 in their asvab, to even qualify for a job like 25S, you need to score (i think) above an 80. Intel jobs are for intelligent people, and their jobs are valued and the personal are needed.
@eshkeemo actually you do not need an 80 on the ASVAB. i got a 75 and this job was open for me and i took it. im a senior in highschool and im waiting to deploy for basic june 27th. i cant wait to get out and be on my own and be an adult. this job had an awesome signing bonus plus i get the delayed entry bonus ontop of that. but i saw this vid and talked to a guy who works this job thats and E6 in the army and he says it is really easy and not very hard. just did my MEPS last weekend. cant wait
@eshkeemo You dont need above 80 to get this MOS, i got only 52 and this MOS appeared lol maybe was the electronic part high score ? :) Well this was 4 days ago so i dont know if is there yet :/
@Camm0Blue it has been sometime since i was in: though i can't speak much for the tactical side, if you are assigned to a strategic location you have regular duties associated with your mos. on top of that you also have normal army duties. it is definitely not like a forward unit. but it is also no cake walk either. for starters, it usually takes at least 10 months in ait just to qualify to do your job.
@Camm0Blue in this mos there are usually 3 different types of soldiers-those who are self-motivated to keep improving; those who just do what is necessary to get by; and those who grumble and complain and eventually prove to be the weak link in the unit, as their ability to even perform to standard their mos begins to show more and more each day.
If you are going into this mos-i would recommend trying to get assigned to a strategic location for the experience which is highly marketable.
@Camm0Blue if you can, and there is a demand for it, i would also try to get your secondary qualification to become a controller. either way, if you are involved in this mos, you would be wise to make the most of it on all levels. this is a highly coveted skill in the civilian world. it will put you a few steps ahead of those who are trying to get into it through college alone.
This is a Great MOS. obviously these vids are mega old... we have more updated junk now. you are kings when you get deployed because you supply the link to the soldiers family back home so everyone wants to be your friend. your work area is usually one of the best buildings on base (when deployed) because your equipment needs good AC and needs to be kept clean so your not sweating your ass off like everyone else.
And when your state-side you dont do shit. work week is a joke.practice golf.
@21142505 Do you go to fort gordon in june? I took the 6 year deal to get the 20k I figure i should get the 6 years experience in the field for my resume and the 20k isn't to bad either lol.
@Camm0Blue ill be shipping out for this mos 20101025 i guess ill see both of you after boot camp at fort benning... they gave you a 20k signing bonus? i only got 6 wtf. just out of curiosity whatd you score on the asfab?
What a joke...I am a 25S...What they don't tell you is the MOS is split mostly in half between nerdy D&D momma's boys and guys who should have been 25C/U. They also don't you that there are only 86 MSG slots in the entire army for this MOS..sure you will make SFC in 10-13 yrs..but you will stay there until you retire..The best tactical jobs in this MOS are with the Special operations guys...The strategic jobs are the worst...12 hour shifts in a windowless building with WOW playing geeks!
I did a slightly different MOS (31Q) years ago, but essentially it's the same thing. We worked on AN/TRC 170, 175, 138A, and 93B (satellite) rigs. I was in Mannheim (great duty station), Ft. Huachuca, and Saudi Arabia (+Bahrain). As I was tactical we went everywhere during the first GW with 3rd AD. Pre-war (late 80's & 90) we did a lot of field exercises to support Able Archer and maneuvers of that nature. Long story short-
Long of the short- this MOS will lead to bigger things in the civilian market. I've been on the civilian side since 1994 and this has been a great career. I install, commission, TNT, and maintain any type of long haul equipment you can name. I install and work on routers, but mostly run scripts for the super geeks, so I don't see a lot of IP gear, but I build every type of long haul out there. There is money with companies like Verizon, AT&T, Frontier, Level 3, Qwest, etc. -many ex-military too
i guess communications stuff. in the PaYS program i picked to have in interview with Microsoft. so i guess i'll be trying to work there. but i wanna make a career outta the army so i can retire after 20 years and collect a fat pension lol and work another job also.
You are either tactical or strategic. If you are tactical you go with anyone that needs signal, even the infantry, and can deploy regularly. But, you only work with your equipment.
If you are strategic you go to static sites that have missions running 24/7. It's basically shift work and you just troubleshoot and do PMCS. If you deploy it's just to support other countries in SatCom or to augment civilian satcom, etc.
This is more or less correct. STRAT can deploy as TAC and TAC can go STRAT. I am a TAC trained and I am both. If your TAC you don't always work with just your equipment lol.
Leaving for BCT this March, I'm looking forward to AIT and meeting my other 25S buddies! HOOoooaaaa!

If you're one of the Sierras selected to be a Controller it has it's ups and downs. Personally I like it because
A) I'm a nerd and we have some really cool shit. No... really.
B) Everywhere you could get assigned is a great place to be. On your days off.
C) Every day you work you get a chance to fix something.

I was infantry for 4 years. I just reclassed to 25S and just 2 weeks ago went to my first duty station at Ft. Meade.
I love it already.
I also hear the Corrections field is pretty good as well but not much after army career.
However, you get $4500 a year of Tuition Assistance while you're in the army, so you could have a degree before you leave in whatever.

Yep. That's my current MOS.
Zalor 2 years ago
Really? can you expand on what you do, the location options, is it challenging, anything really about it would be appreciated.
Noodless01 2 years ago
I haven't shipped for Basic yet. May 5th.
I meant it more along the lines of "That's my MOS, that's what I'll be doing later."

If you deploy it's just to support other countries in SatCom or to augment civilian satcom, etc.
thebirdolux 2 years ago
This is more or less correct. STRAT can deploy as TAC and TAC can go STRAT. I am a TAC trained and I am both. If your TAC you don't always work with just your equipment lol.
