@fayerman Just intrested in opinions from others. I was thinking if it sounds like a well known player. I thought: there's maybe some Scofield in it. :)
@fayerman That's a good one. I share your opinion. Still, it's intresting to learn what people think. It is not wrong to develop things you learn from other players.
@fayerman If striving to do a solo like Scofield was his goal then ofcourse sounding like him is an achievment. Him conforming to what YOU think he should sound like is just retarded. I mean, who the fuck are you?
@k3rm1tTR hammer-on Bb on the A string followed by slide with the thumb to Bb on the E string. Probly sounded OK if you were there, and would have worked better on his usual guitar :-0
This piece demonstrates several qualities inherent in Teles .It is quite unforgiving of any mistakes or sloppy playing as can be heard when Schofield lays down the initial rhythm part .It can also sound sweet at other times and no other guitar has the bite and strong, defined projection from the bridge pick up that a good Tele possesses.I enjoyed this demonstration of a unique and uncompromising guitar.
@TheHumbuckerboy WOW sloppy rhythm playing? Scofield is one of the greatest living exponents of jazz guitar, and you call his rhythm playing sloppy! He's bending the notes off of the neck on purpose... its called feel! Its a truly unreplicable style. And why i agree the tele sounds great he could pick up a piece of shit squier and make it sound better than any one.
@xCORNISHREX Hi , my comment was intended to be about focusing on the unique qualities of Telecasters .I certainly wasn't out to disrespect John Scofield .I have actually been listening to 'I can See your House From Here'CD (with Pat Metheny) a lot recently and really enjoying doing so.This informal session by J S is on my favourites list mainly because I Love the fact that he brings out a really sweet sound (E.G1.15) from his Tele where many lesser players would struggle greatly to do so !
@TheHumbuckerboy no probs mate, i was just really surprised to see the top comment mention sloppy playing and had to reply!! I'm not up on "I can see your house from here" but I'm not really into Pat Metheny find his style a bit too fusion. If you prefer more traditional scofield check out "A go go" with medeski, martin and wood .great funk grooves less musak. Also i find your telecaster comment quite amusingly ironic coming from someone called humbuckerboy!! (that is a horrible musicians joke!)
@xCORNISHREX I will check out 'A go go' at some stage.'I Can See Your House From Here' is unlike most other Metheny albums .Guitars dominate ,with lots of improvisational playing .I am an admirer of Pat Metheny's best work (which is powerful ,beautiful and sublime) but as you have noted, at his worst ,his music can sound like poor ceefax! The only synth sounds here appear only occasionally when PM uses his guitar synth for the odd solo.I have found this album to have been a 'grower'.
The best thing i learned being a bluesman was that blues is narrow, beautiful and unlimited inside its very limited resources. then i learned some other stuff and realized the blues is everywhere: jazz, latin, you name it... then I learned that music is a language so i stopped trying to find blues on top of them all just because it was all i could put my stupid finger to play, so i started studying music and enjoy it all even more.
@14luisalonso OMG i can relate to that man to me blues is like telling a story but without words.. it's like making your guitar cry. i remember the first time i heard the blues man it was like gary moore i think when i heard his music i felt this hard and deep pounding in my chest it almost felt hollow then thats when i realized that i wanted to be a blues guitarist... but yes blues is everywhere blues is the very basic building block of music i started to study jazz recently
@ToyMachine481 what? In reality it's: If you can play jazz, you can play anything (except maybe classical). Blues players are on average inferior to jazz players. Blues is so very simple.
blues is a lifestyle, they OWN that pentatonic scale and it never sounds quite as good when someone who isnt living the blues tries to play it, like a jazz dude who thinks he can play everything cus he can play jazz ;)
@pabcq Well, I kind of agree with you, a mediocre jazz player won't play blues as well as a mediocre blues player, but a great jazz player will play blues just as good (or better) than a great blues player, because if you're a great jazz player, you've already played a lot of blues and being a jazz player gives you such a great overview of every genre in terms of music theory (which enables you to play every genre), and lets face it, blues is the little brother of jazz.
@pabcq Yea that's a thing! This won't go anywhere anyways, we have said what could be said. It will only be opinionated arguments from here on, cheers!

As a friend of my father used to say "assume makes an ass of u and me." I play the blues and I suck at Jazz. I can play the blues better than Scofield but he can play jazz better than me. @harleydavid2009; Sorry my friend, his playin is nice and sophisticated but I don't see in it that punch, rhythmic attack or attitude, should I say, in his sound which is in my opinion a basic signature of the real (“hard-case”) blues player. Blues was originally black-men’s music; because of that it had a rough attitude, it was sexy, passionate, hard, painful, and powerful even when it is slow or mellow.
@harleydavid2009: Also, this refined touch and sound is also present in the blues now days, but it came much later.

Saying all this, I still admire Mr Scofield, very much.
@aektzis91 Oh, how I wish I could. Unfortunately, he's a bit too busy touring and such. So I shall stick to my painting, and leave learning music for a later time :P
@mishanuit If Scofield is your uncle then you are missing out of a huge chunk of jazz guitar history if you are only now aware of his fame because he played at Sam Ash.
@spyguys Oh, I realized he was famous. I just never realized he was THIS famous. I mentioned him to a music teacher at my school, and he nearly had a heart attack, and told me that he was his idol. So I looked him up. I always thought my parents were exaggerating...
Nice compact blues playing! Nothing really new or crazy but solid. A few sweet licks here and there but I was kind of disappointed! John is usually a little more in sync than that. Great effort though!! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"
Like? Are you kidding? This guy is one of the best players of all time - even pissing about on some other guy's Tele! Well, I imagine it's not his - he looks sort of uncomfortable with it, doesn't he? And even though it sounds a bit thin and twangy - yes, it's a fuckin Tele! - it is eminently possible to get some really jazz noises out of one - even the bridge pick up... with the aid of a pedal or two. Anybody know what looper he's using?

Whyusually people expects a perfect playing from the musicians? Take it easy dudes. He is just having fun on the fretboard... It's not a concert nor anything... He can play like a beginner, If he wants...
This isn't really a very traditional blues. It's an electric blues. Like Muddy Waters or something. Traditional would be more like Mississippi John Hurt or something.
Can't see why some people expect him to play the blues like a bluesman, which he is not. Compared to blues, fusion might not be as lyric and sincere time-to-time, but it sure is fun and the more you understand what is happening the more you can enjoy it. I do more and more each day! :)
I freakin love sco! So maybe this isn't the "best" playing of his life but it's still super organic, interesting, soulful and very pool/ He's in his 60's. I like his phrasing on this actually. His impact can never be questioned though as an innovator/composer. Great albums are Still Warm, Time on my hands, Handjive to name a few
I love when he´s digging deep in the bends. The piece between 1:27 and 1:32 is a slice of the Blues Heaven. Average? Well do it better yourself with a 012 set of strings and a just a slightly crunchy sound. It was when I looked at this the third time that I realized that he records his rhythm track the first 12 bars. A true professional doing what he´s asked to do
Amazing sound!!! The sound becomes ofcourse from the fingers of John!!! Amazing player!!! In blues or Jazz or Funk or Fusion.... Fantastic Player and personal Sound...
I wonder if there is some Scofield influences in the video respons "Blues Jam Guitar". What do you think? :)

@mishanuit If Scofield is your uncle then you are missing out of a huge chunk of jazz guitar history if you are only now aware of his fame because he played at Sam Ash.
spyguys 1 year ago
@spyguys Oh, I realized he was famous. I just never realized he was THIS famous. I mentioned him to a music teacher at my school, and he nearly had a heart attack, and told me that he was his idol. So I looked him up. I always thought my parents were exaggerating...

@mishanuit ???????Please tell me your like 10, Scofield is in his own category, soooo effin good. My inspiration.

he plays on top of the bridge a lot, imo that's what characterizes his "unique sound" most--apart from the melodic phrasing he chooses.

What blues solos sound like when you've actually been educated beyond just the, "Blues".
Xillaw 1 year ago 2
Whyusually people expects a perfect playing from the musicians? Take it easy dudes. He is just having fun on the fretboard... It's not a concert nor anything... He can play like a beginner, If he wants...
kingofskateop 1 year ago 7

A true professional doing what he´s asked to do
outside his comfort zone. Great!

average? don't be stupid. Great articulation, feeling and style. Who needs more in that simple blues?

I got this from the description, you know, at your right: "Someone at Sam Ash asked John Scofield to play a traditional blues, so he did."
Is it clear now or do I need to explain it for you ppl who said 'average' ?
