@Rimfaxe96 Have you read about what PETA actually do? They themselves have admited that animals are better off dead than "being unethicaly treated" by humans. Hence, they don't give "rescued" pets into adoption: they kill them instead! What kind of institution wishes to erase a breed of dogs just because their leader doesn't like it? Well, PETA does.
@camuialexa After 8 months, yes, I did. And I think that it depends on how cruely they have been treated. (Will he/she even make it? etc.)
Seriously, go and help out on your own before crying around about PETA. Stop the private breeders who refuse to castrate their animals because it costs money etc.
Yes, PETA did crazy things. Yet, they must do it since the governments all around the world won't pay for animal shelters. Try to get the realistic view. :)
@Rimfaxe96 Well, there was the story about this guy who moved to a smaller apartment and thought his boxer would be happier with someone who owned a bigger place, and so he took his dog to the PETA shelter so they would give the dog a better home. However, just a few hours later he changed his mind, thinking that he loved his dog and he could figure a way to take him out on longer walks or something to make up for the lack of space. So he went to get his dog back, only to find that he had...
@camuialexa already been put to sleep, on the basis that "a grown boxer has almost no chance of being adopted". Well, why didn't they tell the guy this in the first place?
Don't go asuming things about people you don't know. Try googling COAT from Hermosillo city, that's the NGO I support and make donations to. This is a real institution working with volunteers that have NEVER put any healthy pet to sleep just because they don't think they have a chance to be adopted or dislike the breed.
all you peta members do is bull shit. ''animal cruelty'' this and that. it is cruelty when the animal is deliberately injured. Everything peta is against ex. horse racing, eating animals, etc. is a part of life. you can't stop the way the world works. and you never will.
@Nucleo85Torino @ 2 broken legs? My word. But if true, it proves a belief of mine that I read somewhere years ago. Peta used to be good, before they became money hungry. Like most organizations today. This was an accident not murder. They didn't intend for her to breakdown. Murder you plan to kill someone something.
PETA is a group of money-grubbing hypocrites who have no concern for animals. Their only concern is publicity and wangling donations from bleeding-heart animal lovers. PETA rescues no animals, they have no shelters, they save no animals. It's all a massive publicity stunt from start to finish. It's time this group had it's non-profit staus taken away.
Half these people didn't even know about EB until she broke down and had to be euthanized. Then they go on saying stupid comments about how bad HR is etc... When they don't even know the half of it/about the sport/Trainers/owners etc...
there is no real "right" way to race. Racing as all people know is dangerous, they know that even before they get in the saddle and on the track. Being a racer myself, I know it is and was what my horse wanted to do and thats what we intended to do. Accidents do happen and they will happen. From a simple fall to a fatal fall, it is the risk all racers take into heart.
PETA is retarded.they dont deserve to call themselves animal lovers.they are arrogant, whiny pricks.the way they go about things is all wrong.i love animals but the crap PETA does is just pathetic.i mean, throwing fish guts on a a model while she was on the runway because she was dressed in animal furs is soooooo ig and rude.and it doesnt solve anything. good job PETA,now what?like really its so childish to do things like that. PETA makes me sick.I can't stand close minded phyco people like that
"bute" has been an acceptable form of pain relief for decades. It's similar to Motrin in that it numbs any pain the horse might use as an indicator that something is wrong. When the horse breaks down because he can't feel pain, the owners opt to euthanize them for the insurance money...a common practice. Rather than nurture them back to health, too costly for a horse that will never make them "Big Bucks" again.
"Bute" a long time acceptable drug, similar to Motrin, numbs pain and allows to horse to run with injuries. The horse, in turn, feels no pain while running and in turn, exacerbates the injury. By the end of the race, the horse breaks down and the greedy owners opt to put them down for the insurance money.
i dont like seeing animals hurt but these horses are bred to run.Eight belles reminds me of ruffian, she had heart. If you take away this sport and just gave the horse freedom ill bet ya 10bucks that horse is gonna be bored and plus it would be unhappy.
Eight Belles could have been saved...to me get that up in a sling and let Eight Belles heal. That's my theory and belief and I'm sticking to it, period!
With BOTH front fetlocks shattered, there is NO way thtis horse could have been saved. Horses bear most their weight on the forehand (front) and since thoroughbreds weigh about 1,200 lbs, there wouldn't have been any way she could have taken weight off her two front legs. Horses cannot stand upright on their hind legs for more thn a few seconds, even if supported by a sling...It's sad! If ONE front leg is broken at a joint, even then, chances are extremely poor of saving the poor horse. :((
and thats why your an idiot...horses very rarely live after breaking a single leg and even after several surgeries and months of rest they are never "normal" horses again...she would have been in exteme pain and beyond misrable if they had tried to save her
noo way was she on steriods...thoughbred horses get injured sooo much because the way they run all there weight is only on one foot at a time...there for when she broke one front ankle she came down on the other and broke it to
STEROIDS???? Thats stupid as hell, the horse broke BOTH front ankles adn there is no way for them to heal from that, the horse will shift its weight to its back legs and thier bodies are not made for that much wieght on only two legs...their bone will go through the cushion in thier hooves and they will still die just in alot more pain. The horses are also tested VERY regularly in high stakes racing like this. It is a very sad thing to watch such a magnificent animal go down....very sad!
I would estimate horses die at about a fraction of humans per population that die. Maybe for every horse that dies about 75,000 humans die. There are more people than horses but put it in perspective and get a life if you think horse racing is cruel... so are automobiles, cancer, poverty, justice, your job or lack of it..
huh, whats your point? their just as alive as we are stupid. i care about animals as much as humans, may be een more because an animal has no evil in it and doesn't murder people!
Steriods had nothing to do with her ankles breaking. Race horses are started so young their bones don't have time to develope and mend so .... Bones break. Poor Eight belles RIP
Horse races are questionable, but one can´t blame steroids. Race Horses at full speed are subjected to forces that horses legs are not really prepared to sustain.
I work with racers everyday. We can't even give them peppermints or anything with sugar or caffine in it for blood tests. Steroids don't show up easily on blood tests. As of January 1st 2009 steriods are going to be banned. Toe grabs are going to be banned as well. Toe grabs are what really cause horses to break down. Most young horses with oversized toe grabs Shin-buck, which can cause severe injuries. So, it isn't just steroids.
PETA is not out there to protect animals-they are out there to get money for their own gain.
Eight Belles was not on steroids, and it was proven. But I see that you wont ever believe that because you support the hypocritical and outrageous group PETA, which you are completely brainwashed and I feel sorry for you. I support animal welfare through ASPCA and HSUS, which I advise you to look up. If you want to know the truth about PETA, look up the video "PETA Bullshit". It is dead on.
@Ruffian4Ever Very well said. I honor you for pointing all of that true information. PETA doesn't protect animals. If they wanted to help animals then they would have rescued some animals by now just like the ASPCA.
ok, the first bit was good. You spelled weasels wrong, and HELLO! Most of us are supporting the whole 'Ban Slaughter' thing, unlike that bastard Ruffian4Ever. I have to say, I dont see any posters, other than mine, where I live protecting animal rights. so.. Wherever you're from, shutup. someonewho can't even spell weasels properly, shouldn't be making comments about how unintellegent people are, because you're an idiot yourself.
p.e.t.a = people euthenizing the animals these sick bastards just need to butt out and mind their own buisiness...we had one of these freaks protesting at the rodeo i listened to this "vegetarian" tell me that working cattle was cruel to the cattle and the horses... he went away when i asked him "if you care so much you don't eat meat or ride a horse why are you wearing leather boots?"
hear hear! You show that bastard! Had one of those idiots come into our rodea too... Slugged him a couple times, then i told him to get lost, because in OUR town, we actually take care of our horses, and we don't need p.e.t.a. idiots telling us how to raise animals. After that, he ran away pretty damn fast.
peta is the most ridiculous, insane, illogical, and undereducated organization ive ever known of. they constantly make unrighteous accusations and its real tiring already.
peta doesn't know what the hell they're talking about! I've been around horses, I worked at Del Mar as a hotwalker and I can honestly say all the horses were treated with care and resepct. They were not on steroids and nobody abused them; they were treated well!
PETA, go hug a tree or go protect a squarrel or something!
ya'l r fuckin retards she wasn't on steroids! she never took them and i kno tht cuz she literally lived rite next to me and mi family... get a life and stop making up lies cuz we cried and i kno u didnt cuz u thought this! i talked to the jockey and the trainer! how could u b so cold hearted... i guess u never even met her or ride her cuz when u rode her she was the most graceful thing in the whole fuckin world! so get a life not about makin up lies!
yeah right kathy guillermo, you are concerned for the horses?? can i have a bucket please to be sick in?! how many defenseless and adoptable animals has peta put down without warrant or cause? and then you claim to be concerned about the horses?? biggest load of bullshit i have heard out of her mouth... stupid cow.. like she knows anything about the racing sport? i think not....
big brown wasnt on steriods he was just plain GOOD. and so was eight bells! i think her ankels were bothering her at the end because you can see that she was going REALLY fast and was just about to go in front of him but then she slowed down and he out ran her and THEN she collapsed. thats my opinion. im not blaming anybody. i dont believe that any type of drug was used. i think she could have won but who knows.
Big Brown was on the steroid Winstrol for the Derby and Preakness. And Eight Belles' fetlocks werent bothering her-they broke when she fell. She was pulling away from the rest of the field and Big Brown was Not pulling away from her.
Big Brown was on steriods actually. The thing is that while most horses are given weekly doses, he was given it monthly for "maintenance" (sp). There are still some "legal" steroids in TB racing unfortunately. I could go on and on about all that's wrong with our horse racing world, but why bother. It will never change and horses will keep coming up lame and breaking down all before the age of 5.
I'm a member of PETA and I can truly say that 95% of its members are compassionate lovers of animals. They hate horse racing because of what happens to these horses- they die and are pushed too hard in many cases. Although some members of PETA go too far with it, they do not represent PETA as a whole. Think before you speak, please.
PETA why must you blame anything/anyone for the death of Eight Belles? Will you just DROP IT?!?!? I mean its not like you really know anything about the sport....
i think she WAS on steroids cuz there is kinda no other way she could of just fallen like that or if she did fall she probaly woulndt of broke both frount ankles lioke that
r u joking a misstep can happen in any fucking sport just because she fell doesnt mean shes on any steroids!!! i fell playing basketball in p.e. am i pumped full of steroids!
She was not on steroids look it up. And she broke down from a mis step. When you walk you twist your ankle sometime right? Well thats what happened to her! But instead of say twisting her ankle she broke both of them. Due to the fact that she weights hundreds of pounds.
Do you know anything about horses? First of all, she was tested for steroids in her autopsy and everything came back negative. Secondly, these are 1200 pound animals that run on ankles that aren't much bigger than yours. Change the racing surfaces or wait until they're four to race them. This steroid bullshit is just ignorant.
And FYI, using the word "cuz" doesn't really lend itself to credibility.
have you ever twisted your ankle before? *gasp* omg, you're on steroids!! (end of sarcasm) see what i mean? it was a freak accident. nothing caused it, nothing could have prevented it.
So ur telling me if u take steriods ur automatically take a misstep and break both ankles??? thats the stupidest thing ive ever hear. my brother ran and torn his ACL in baseball..did he take steriods?? uhm no.
even if she was on steroids witch she wasn't it most likely wouldn't cause this fuck up peta god you people only watch this stuff so you can have something to bitch about
Peta is ridiculous. They profess a hate for the horse's euthanasia - yet they do the same to approximately 70% of the pets they take in each year. Google it. It's easy to find, and they make no bones about it.
What hypocrites. A couple was fined for throwing dozens of pets into a dumpster in North Carolina not that long ago.
asked me after it if i was okay with them just putting her down like that. and i always answered YES! it was a very humane choice, in my opinion. that would have been a very hard injury to overcome. she would have constantly been in an immense amount of pain if they had tried to fix her, and she most likely wouldn't have tolerated the accomodations (like most horses dont) that would have been necessary, and therefore caused more injuries to herself. she was a great filly, so can we just
people are so terrible. just cuz she was big meant she was on steroids?? just cuz she was the first filly in a long time good enough to make it to the derby? bite me. accidents and injuries happen in every discipline, and every rider and trainer takes a huge risk. i dont hear a fraction as much controversy when a horse dies in cross country, which happens WAAY more often! and clearly her trainer is very upset about it, so leave him alone people and PETA! a lot of my non-horsey friends
Trainer Larry Jones said in a phone interview Thursday he believes the horse just tripped over her own feet.
"She's bad about stumbling while pulling up," Jones said. "She's doesn't pick her feet up very high. It's one reason she could run very fast and far. She had the perfect motion for being effective and efficient. However, those horses who do that have a tendency to want to stumble."
The autopsy (necropsy as called in the racing industry) revealed Eight Belles had no diseases or pre-existing bone abnormalities that caused the filly to break down. There also will be routine post-race drug-testing and further medication tests requested by Eight Belles trainer Larry Jones. Jones has said he wants the extra scrutiny to prove the large, muscular filly wasn't on steroids at the time.
i think she wasnt on steroids because my whole family races horses and if you enter in the derby why would you put your horse on steroids if you knew you were going to get caught
I hate PETA. Stop putting animals before humankind. I guaruntee there were no roids and her legs were fine durring the whole race. You cant take 2nd with broken legs. Sad story, but peta needs to screw off.
Join SHARK...because PETA SUX!!!!! Dumbass PETA came through to UGA...turned 20 rabid dogs loose onto the streets of Athens..."because no animal should be caged"...They also trashed our labs...caused several thousands of dollars in damage...the money we need for our vet studies!! PETA people are just plain RETARDED! I say put your money where your mouth is..start adopting race horses like I do...then you will learn what these horses are all about! They love running, it's what they do best!
Bullshit PETA is are all aholes and don't know what they are talking about. My family has race horses and it happens to a few of them every year and we miss them deppely when any of our horses walk onto the race course we are hoping that they run the best but also even if they come in dead last we are still happy because the did not hurt themselves
clinton, i wouldn't call 2nd of 20 losing. and she broke 2 legs just because she was unlucky. You wouldn't have been saying fillies shouldn't race with the colts after last year's belmont.
k, eight belles was not injected with steriods, first off, GIRL running with 19 boys, second, SHES 3! that race is a mile and a quarter, that takes so much out of a filly, i mean look at rags to riches, you never hear of her any more after the belmont, steroids is not part of this
Ugh... how well did Barbaro run after the Derby? So he didn't belong in the Derby either? Fillies do perfectly well against colts every day. Horses sometimes break legs. There's no correlation between break downs and fillies facing colts. Colts often break down against colts, fillies often break down against fillies, sometimes fillies break down against colts and sometimes colts break down when there's fillies in their race. It's not about sex.
Fillies vs colts...colts vs fillies....colts vs colts....colts vs phillies...Wait a football team can't play a baseball team....now that my headache went away...it is actually more prevalent for a filly to break down against the boys but there isn't realy a need to argue here whats done is done.
There is no statistical correlation. Show me your evidence. Look at European racing... fillies win against colts every day and are perfectly healthy after doing so. If you have an informed opinion, that's fine, but I want to see your information. According to ESPN and NTRA there is no such correlation. For every Ruffian, there's a Genuine Risk and a Winning Colors who can run the entire Triple Crown safely.
Winning Colors and Genuine Risk never ran the same after running those races. And for information there's place called common sense that should clarify things.
Genuine Risk ran great in all of the triple crown races. The Derby win didn't ruin her. She should have won the Preakness but for that idiot Cordero whipping her face. Winning Colors was narrowly defeated in the Breeders Distaff by the undefeated Personal Ensign. How can you say they didn't run the same? You should use some common sense. I like to back my opinion with facts. You won't show the slightest facts to back up your opinion.
You're right I won't get facts because I am too lazy. However, I do feel that you should call the Olympic Rules Comm. so girls can run in the same race as boys at the Olympics. But I suppose that's not really relevant.
Thoroughbreds are born to run. It is in their blood and in their souls. The jockey had nothing to do with her breaking down. It was a horrible, unfortunate accident that happened after she showed she could run with the big boys. Nothing to do with whether or not she was a filly or a colt. She ran because she loved to run, not because of the jockey on her back. Her incredible life and 2nd place finish in the Kentucky Derby against a field of colts need to be remembered, not her death.
Kinda odd....she didn't break her legs untill after the race...meaning...she was fine when being ridden to her max and being whipped (crop) by your "animal on her back", but once she slowed down and nothing was going on is when she died....so you make absolutley no sense.
either way, no horses should be dying because of human's entertainment. This is horrible. Why you people watch these races knowing all the cruelty behind it.This is another case where an animal dies because of human greed.
that's a bunch of bullshit...she wasn't on steriods. the testing after the race on of her body fluids was clear. no steriods/drugs. theya re doing the autopsy to see what went wrong with her lead leg. you see her sire, and tell me she's on steriods. the way she ran was effortless, which can contribute to heart/talent. PETA can shove accusations up their butt because Churchill Downs is one of the safest tracks. in the whole 134 years of the KD, no horse has EVER been been hurt like her.
I think it would be GREAT to run a test on 8 Belles to prove right or wrong is steriods were in use or not.... as well as to see if it were her heart. Either way a sad ending to a great horse that loved to run
yes it 1000000000% unpreventable i seen that horse run at DE park shes a nice Filly but that could havent been stopped it could happen then or at philly park even way it may have happend anywere it was a miss step thats all dont blame the trainer, owner, jocky god jus wanted to c her race LIVE thats all
There are 3 things that influence a horse's life- nutrition, management & genetics. I think that these 3 things may be creating horses without the necessary bone density to run. Maybe every horse should get a done density test before they can get tattooed. This filly had a catastrophic injury that reeks of structural failure and no-one is to blame, PETA is idiotic. Too many TBs are dying on the track & maybe some good will come out of this- bless Eight Belles!
i agree. PETA is a joke...they're clowns...one of the organizations in this country who are not and SHOULD not be taken seriously until they calm down about things and start helping animals and not just yelling at people who dont
I think it's a shame that Larry Jones even has to defend himself like this. PETA is making unsubstantiated accusations about anyone involved in the tragedy. Just looking at Larry Jones's reaction to Eight Belles' death shows that he loved the horse and wouldn't have done anything to hurt her. He's a great trainer and a true horseman and it saddens me deeply to see anyone treat him like this.
lol...im sure he cared greatly for her but no horse is perfectly sound. Every horse on the track has its problems. It is always bad when a horse with heart is put into a situation like run with the boys.
Eight Belles was perfectly capable of running with the boys. She wasn't even tired when she crossed the line. She just tripped 2 furlongs after the wire. My horse has tripped and fallen down before as we cantered around the ring... and I wasn't asking her to do anything that she was incapable of... we've cantered around the ring before and since then, perfectly fine. It was just an accident.
If she wasn't tired why did she lose? If she tripped why did she shatter both front ankles? Not looking to start a sexist argument here but three year old fillies should run with other fillies to prevent things such as this.
In the wake of three high profile equestrian sports deaths in two weeks PETA descended on the National Racing Commission in Lexington Kentucky. Immediately following the death of Eight Belles this week in the Kentucky Derby and the deaths of Frodo Baggins and Quiet Man last week during the Rolex Three Day Event, PETA organized a protest change in the industry.
Video of the protest from the Kentucky Horse Park posted on my Channel page.
Someone needs to bring about some changes to the sport..if it takes PETA to draw attention to it, then so be it. The sport won't end..it's stupid to think it will. It could be made safer for the animals though.
My thought is, this mare is worth a LOT of money, and yeah she prob would be more after racing in the Derby. But would they really think of riskinga mare worth this much, with this much time on her?? At the same time to be on the records as I think its the 2nd filly to win the Derby would ROCK! ~shruggs~ There is DEF a lot more info needed.
Im someone close to the sport and Ive worked at the same track as L. Jones. If he said she was not on steroids, than she was definetely not on steroids.
You never really know....The United States is the only country that allows the use of medication to be given the day of a race. It's easy for a trainer to see the horse in pain and give them somthing to mask it. Could be very well what happened that day. She could have been hurt the day before and they medicated her to not feel the pain. Very sad if you ask me.. This "sport" should be banned! Too many horses die for gambling..They deserve better lives than that!! RIP Eight Belles
Wrong. All these horses are tested and retested. They're not doped. And any trainer who'd run a horse when they knew it wasn't sound soon wouldn't have any horse in their stable to train. Once you lose your reputation no owners would want to risk it.
PETA really needs to do something else with their time/money. they're a little too over the top. i can't stand this group

there is no real "right" way to race.

"bute" has been an acceptable form of pain relief for decades. It's similar to Motrin in that it numbs any pain the horse might use as an indicator that something is wrong. When the horse breaks down because he can't feel pain, the owners opt to euthanize them for the insurance money...a common practice. Rather than nurture them back to health, too costly for a horse that will never make them "Big Bucks" again.
musikat2010 2 years ago
"Bute" a long time acceptable drug, similar to Motrin, numbs pain and allows to horse to run with injuries. The horse, in turn, feels no pain while running and in turn, exacerbates the injury. By the end of the race, the horse breaks down and the greedy owners opt to put them down for the insurance money.
musikat2010 2 years ago
i dont like seeing animals hurt but these horses are bred to run.Eight belles reminds me of ruffian, she had heart.

SweetestCinBabe 2 years ago
With BOTH front fetlocks shattered, there is NO way thtis horse could have been saved. Horses bear most their weight on the forehand (front) and since thoroughbreds weigh about 1,200 lbs, there wouldn't have been any way she could have taken weight off her two front legs. Horses cannot stand upright on their hind legs for more thn a few seconds, even if supported by a sling...It's sad! If ONE front leg is broken at a joint, even then, chances are extremely poor of saving the poor horse. :((

Ruffian4Ever 3 years ago 23
@Ruffian4Ever Very well said. I honor you for pointing all of that true information. PETA doesn't protect animals. If they wanted to help animals then they would have rescued some animals by now just like the ASPCA.

She was not on steroids look it up. And she broke down from a mis step. When you walk you twist your ankle sometime right? Well thats what happened to her! But instead of say twisting her ankle she broke both of them. Due to the fact that she weights hundreds of pounds.
Funny1991 3 years ago
Do you know anything about horses? First of all, she was tested for steroids in her autopsy and everything came back negative. Secondly, these are 1200 pound animals that run on ankles that aren't much bigger than yours. Change the racing surfaces or wait until they're four to race them. This steroid bullshit is just ignorant.
And FYI, using the word "cuz" doesn't really lend itself to credibility.

asked me after it if i was okay with them just putting her down like that. and i always answered YES! it was a very humane choice, in my opinion. that would have been a very hard injury to overcome. she would have constantly been in an immense amount of pain if they had tried to fix her, and she most likely wouldn't have tolerated the accomodations (like most horses dont) that would have been necessary, and therefore caused more injuries to herself. she was a great filly, so can we just
showjumpinluv 3 years ago
people are so terrible. just cuz she was big meant she was on steroids?? just cuz she was the first filly in a long time good enough to make it to the derby? bite me. accidents and injuries happen in every discipline, and every rider and trainer takes a huge risk. i dont hear a fraction as much controversy when a horse dies in cross country, which happens WAAY more often! and clearly her trainer is very upset about it, so leave him alone people and PETA! a lot of my non-horsey friends
showjumpinluv 3 years ago 3
Trainer Larry Jones said in a phone interview Thursday he believes the horse just tripped over her own feet.
"She's bad about stumbling while pulling up," Jones said. "She's doesn't pick her feet up very high. It's one reason she could run very fast and far. She had the perfect motion for being effective and efficient. However, those horses who do that have a tendency to want to stumble."
Hermione6201 3 years ago
The autopsy (necropsy as called in the racing industry) revealed Eight Belles had no diseases or pre-existing bone abnormalities that caused the filly to break down. There also will be routine post-race drug-testing and further medication tests requested by Eight Belles trainer Larry Jones. Jones has said he wants the extra scrutiny to prove the large, muscular filly wasn't on steroids at the time.

clinton, i wouldn't call 2nd of 20 losing. and she broke 2 legs just because she was unlucky. You wouldn't have been saying fillies shouldn't race with the colts after last year's belmont.
kmnmiamisax 3 years ago
k, eight belles was not injected with steriods, first off, GIRL running with 19 boys, second, SHES 3! that race is a mile and a quarter, that takes so much out of a filly, i mean look at rags to riches, you never hear of her any more after the belmont, steroids is not part of this
orangecountydrums44 3 years ago
Ugh...how well did that filly run after that race? Oh...she didnt run again after that.
clinton9432 3 years ago
Ugh... how well did Barbaro run after the Derby? So he didn't belong in the Derby either? Fillies do perfectly well against colts every day. Horses sometimes break legs. There's no correlation between break downs and fillies facing colts. Colts often break down against colts, fillies often break down against fillies, sometimes fillies break down against colts and sometimes colts break down when there's fillies in their race. It's not about sex.
kmnmiamisax 3 years ago 2
Fillies vs colts...colts vs fillies....colts vs colts....colts vs phillies...Wait a football team can't play a baseball team....now that my headache went away...it is actually more prevalent for a filly to break down against the boys but there isn't realy a need to argue here whats done is done.
Ruffian
clinton9432 3 years ago
There is no statistical correlation. Show me your evidence. Look at European racing... fillies win against colts every day and are perfectly healthy after doing so. If you have an informed opinion, that's fine, but I want to see your information. According to ESPN and NTRA there is no such correlation. For every Ruffian, there's a Genuine Risk and a Winning Colors who can run the entire Triple Crown safely.
kmnmiamisax 3 years ago
Winning Colors and Genuine Risk never ran the same after running those races. And for information there's place called common sense that should clarify things.
Rags to Riches
clinton9432 3 years ago
Genuine Risk ran great in all of the triple crown races. The Derby win didn't ruin her. She should have won the Preakness but for that idiot Cordero whipping her face. Winning Colors was narrowly defeated in the Breeders Distaff by the undefeated Personal Ensign. How can you say they didn't run the same? You should use some common sense. I like to back my opinion with facts. You won't show the slightest facts to back up your opinion.
kmnmiamisax 3 years ago
You're right I won't get facts because I am too lazy. However, I do feel that you should call the Olympic Rules Comm. so girls can run in the same race as boys at the Olympics. But I suppose that's not really relevant.

gregcz2000 3 years ago
BIG difference between riding crops and whips! Look it up!
BarnPrincess121 3 years ago
The principle is the same: she wouldn't have died were it not for the animal on her back.
gregcz2000 3 years ago
Thoroughbreds are born to run. It is in their blood and in their souls. The jockey had nothing to do with her breaking down. It was a horrible, unfortunate accident that happened after she showed she could run with the big boys. Nothing to do with whether or not she was a filly or a colt. She ran because she loved to run, not because of the jockey on her back. Her incredible life and 2nd place finish in the Kentucky Derby against a field of colts need to be remembered, not her death.
7888ek 3 years ago 2
Kinda odd....she didn't break her legs untill after the race...meaning...she was fine when being ridden to her max and being whipped (crop) by your "animal on her back", but once she slowed down and nothing was going on is when she died....so you make absolutley no sense.
Sopak23 3 years ago
either way, no horses should be dying because of human's entertainment. This is horrible. Why you people watch these races knowing all the cruelty behind it.This is another case where an animal dies because of human greed.
stervouchka 3 years ago

sk8rchikk07 3 years ago 2
that's a bunch of bullshit...she wasn't on steriods. the testing after the race on of her body fluids was clear. no steriods/drugs. theya re doing the autopsy to see what went wrong with her lead leg. you see her sire, and tell me she's on steriods. the way she ran was effortless, which can contribute to heart/talent. PETA can shove accusations up their butt because Churchill Downs is one of the safest tracks. in the whole 134 years of the KD, no horse has EVER been been hurt like her.
sk8rchikk07 3 years ago 3

There are 3 things that influence a horse's life- nutrition, management & genetics. I think that these 3 things may be creating horses without the necessary bone density to run. Maybe every horse should get a done density test before they can get tattooed. This filly had a catastrophic injury that reeks of structural failure and no-one is to blame, PETA is idiotic. Too many TBs are dying on the track & maybe some good will come out of this- bless Eight Belles!

louie77 3 years ago 2
I think it's a shame that Larry Jones even has to defend himself like this. PETA is making unsubstantiated accusations about anyone involved in the tragedy. Just looking at Larry Jones's reaction to Eight Belles' death shows that he loved the horse and wouldn't have done anything to hurt her. He's a great trainer and a true horseman and it saddens me deeply to see anyone treat him like this.
kmnmiamisax 3 years ago 3
lol...im sure he cared greatly for her but no horse is perfectly sound. Every horse on the track has its problems. It is always bad when a horse with heart is put into a situation like run with the boys.
clinton9432 3 years ago
Eight Belles was perfectly capable of running with the boys. She wasn't even tired when she crossed the line. She just tripped 2 furlongs after the wire. My horse has tripped and fallen down before as we cantered around the ring... and I wasn't asking her to do anything that she was incapable of... we've cantered around the ring before and since then, perfectly fine. It was just an accident.
kmnmiamisax 3 years ago 2
If she wasn't tired why did she lose? If she tripped why did she shatter both front ankles? Not looking to start a sexist argument here but three year old fillies should run with other fillies to prevent things such as this.
clinton9432 3 years ago
In the wake of three high profile equestrian sports deaths in two weeks PETA descended on the National Racing Commission in Lexington Kentucky. Immediately following the death of Eight Belles this week in the Kentucky Derby and the deaths of Frodo Baggins and Quiet Man last week during the Rolex Three Day Event, PETA organized a protest change in the industry.
Video of the protest from the Kentucky Horse Park posted on my Channel page.
