it wasn't a symbol of protection it was a symbol of power and strength and now its one of the seventh wonders of the world as for training elite troops the emperors could not even trust their own subjects prime example emperor chin he thought everyone was after him
Chinese emperors spent so much money and labour to build the Great Wall, just because of their threats from the north. Originated from a small region besides the Yellow River, China conquered lots of nations, and it's territory grows larger and larger. China survives after thousands of years, because every time it was invaded by other countries, its people get united and diminish those invaders. Those who did things evil to the Chinese will be in danger after China's getting stronger.
i really dont understand what those emperor are thinking about. Every emperor from different dynasty built the wall and let their citizen suffer. They should spent the money and time to train an elite group of army that can fight the enemy off. They should also find ways to improve their armor and equipment. Furthermore they should treat their ppl well and increase their morale. But, they let their citizen suffer for so many years and depend on a pile of rock. (i am a chinese too)
@happygolucky93 you keep thinking that's good for you but your knowledge limits yout thought. the babarians were cavalries they attacked and robbed a city then left. there was no other way to avoid thouse harassment .
@happygolucky93 they lived far deep inside the prairie. and the han could hardly find their living place to attack. mogolians have vast prairie to raise horses and sheep however the han only have farm lands and did not have those good horses for wars.
@happygolucky93 the han people always had advanced weapons then nomads did. it was the manchurians who occupied China and started to use cold weapons instead of advanced Chinese invented cannons and guns.
@happygolucky93 I haven't given it much thought yet but I imagine 1: it's a very huge cost to train an maintain an elite army (imagine the US defence budget) 2: this army has the potential to rebel if it is discontent (ie. the praetorian guards of Rome or the numerous other generals made emperors)
@happygolucky93 :) You're welcome. Actually, I'd like to comment on some of the previous replies to your question. I feel it's more of a financial problem than a military one. The Chinese have had successful attacks against nomads (ie. those conducted by Wu emperor of Han against the Huns). However, these attacks drained the imperial coffers and the pasture lands gained from these attacks haven't the potential to refill the coffers.
@happygolucky93 Furthermore, to maintain control over these lands (protection from raids, social order, etc.), the Chinese have to continuously field a large cavalry force, which actually costs more than what the land is worth. So the problem essentially becomes whether you want less raids or more money.
I'd like to add that I like how you added the "for sharing" at the end in a different paragraph - almost as an afterthought. :D
The Dalai Lama was given much more perts to show that the Manchurians and the Mongolians have religious commonality. The term Dalai Lama is Mongolian. This is to make Chinese rule over Mongolian legit. The use of religion to legitimize rule appeared in Europe as well.
It wasn't take Tibet paid tribute to China; it was that Tibet actively solicited miliary aid from China, and China ruled Mongolians. Tibet's behaved in a way to share common future with the rest of China.
@tqrules01 This is true. America before gaining independence in 1776 did belong to the English. If only Tibetans are strong enough to defeat their Chinese masters, they would have independence too. But until then, enjoy being ruled by China.
What language is chinese? I've never heard of it.

@happygolucky93 Fighting the mongols without defenses is suicide. They can still kill you even if you cut their legs off. They are monsters.
