It was 2005 and I was ferrying a small plane across the ocean - a 13 hr. flight. I had brought some tapes including a Buddy Holly tape I'd never heard before. I was watching the clouds drifting below when this awesome tune played. I immediately fell in love with this song.
As a pilot myself, it really pisses me off how that moron decided to fly through a snowstorm in Feb 1959, and by so doing ended the career of the REAL king of rock & roll -- Buddy Holly !!
Destroyer: I don't personally believe Eddie Cochran had a body of work to compare to the true giants of early Rock & Roll, but if he is one of your favorites, then more power to you.
Its easy to forget when listening to Buddy the contribution the other musicians made to making these records memorable J I is one of the all time greats on drums and carboard boxes as on this cut.
In EVERYTHING he touched musically Buddy had ALL SIX winning lottery numbers plus the bonus ball and scooped all the jackpots, but, when it came to that GODDAMMED airplane flight......................................................................if only, if only, IF ONLY. And as today's pop gets progressively more horrible[even most 'kids' dislike it] his loss becomes the more poignant, coz he'd have given it SO much more direction way back then.
remember the day he died - called his music "rock a billy" the variety of sounds, emotions and life was hard to comprehend.had a heart, a soul and a life all in 23 yrs how lucky we were to have had him grace our lives!!!
I think you left the tail end off by accident, but if you listen to the VERY end you can here the beginning of a cricket chirping. Very fitting for a song by the crickets
The last photo is Dion and the Belmonts singing "Teenager in Love". How do I know? Dion told me himself. He said that was the last song Buddy ever heard (looks like he dug it too). What you see Buddy wearing in this photo is what he died in. The only difference was he put a yellow leather coat over it. He said that whole tour they froze their asses off and rarely changed clothes which may explain why Buddys white sleeve looks dirty.
I've always wondered about that photo. I do believe that he's wearing a yellow leather coat with a fur type collar in those photos. According to the cororner's report, at the time of his death Buddy was wearing a full length coat of yellow, leather like material.
OMG! I never thought about the similarities B4! I love the Clash as much as I love Buddy. And thats A LOT!! Believe me. Thanx. very interesting. I knew Joe Strummer did rockabilly B4 he was in the Clash but I really never thought about this B4.
Thanks, buddyfan57. A great Buddy tune- way ahead of its time. Blondie did it 20 years later and it sounded new again. That was 30 years ago! Buddy still sounds great. 5-stars and Good Luck to all from the Captain.
YES!!! Yet another of Holly's lesser known, but just as great songs! This one, along with Listen to Me were originally cut as demos only and neither were released until long after the initial recordings. Once again, RIP Buddy!
Listen to this, and tell me these guys weren't the Beatles' grandaddies...

One of a very small handful of the truly great pioneers of Rock, along with Berry,
Presley, Orbison, Domino...I sure miss those guys.
43robmik 2 years ago 8
You nailed it. People don't realize how much Domino contributed to rock n' roll. And Orbison and Preslley are obvious. Buddy was and is the man.
