Those who do get bent out of shape by Duchamp don't have any joy in their hearts or the imagination to find the things that are, or could be art, that surround them all of the time. It might be wise for those folks to have a glass of wine or three, it also couldn't hurt for those folks to take an art history class or two.
I find the negative sentiment in this thread really absurd. You don't have to like his work, but the negativity towards him just bolsters his notions of the art world and uptight people in general, and reinforces the profundity of his impact on art & culture. The fact that people are negging it 100 years later is hilarious.
@ChristendomArcanum Uh, if you paid attention he was a young student when he made that. How many things have you made when you were 17 that anyone has bothered to regard as important? Not a personal attack, just saying, he's talented, it may not be your thing but this guy IS a genius. Duchamp, or R. Mutt as it were, at The Armory Show radically changed the art world. In fact he was attacking your very sentiment, and he won.
@beradification You also have to understand what he was doing in HIS period. You have over 100 years to judge him. He turned the art world upside down. He influenced the major periods after him. He's like the fucking Beatles of the art world. What's sad is you don't get it!
@PAblkdog What did he influence people to do? Help me to 'get it'. I would never say that the Beatles were the best musicians even if he was comparable to them. Populism isn't the same as virtue or skill. The fact is in his own time he didn't produce anything of value to world culture. I wouldn't even put him in my top thousand most influential visual artists To answer that other person, I'm watching the video bcause I'm trying to figure out the facts about him, rather than just what is popular
@beradification He influenced people to forget about the pre-conceived values and ideas of art that people were taught from history and in schools. Duchamp actually knew how to really paint and draw, he just mostly decided not to. His ridiculous ideas were trying to get rid of the self-importance of art and yet he pretty much became self-important because of that. He had a sense of humor and even he did not take his stuff seriously.
@beradification "The fact is in his own time he didn't produce anything of value to world culture." Entirely untrue, he is one of the most important artists in all of art history since Neanderthals were painting on cave walls. He's one of the most important agents in 20th Century art & popular culture.
@beradification "and he was in cahoots with all the uber rich people of his day, most notably peggy guggenheim." you do realize that that has been one of the few tried and tested means of making a living as an artist. Unless you come from rich family that are willing to support you how else are you going to make any kind of a living. And what ever you may think about the quality of his work you would have to concede that he was an important theorist and a intelligent man.
The surprise does not last. The time levels (abrades) all thing (Olivier Messiaen). That's why the quality of "new" (or "revolutionary" "provocative"...) is not enough, not the most important to make a work of art, a work able to interest a long time.
Yes. I agree. That's why I'm not into John Cage. Still, you have to admire someone who has the guts to be quite that outrageous. Nothing is sacred, nothing is holy. It takes someone like Marcel Duchamp, or John Cage, or hell, Johnny Rotten even to make that clear to people. Now anyone who makes art that is unconventional has a precedent: "hell, Marcel Duchamp put a toilet in a museum, there's nothing I can't do". Even though it's still a damn toilet
this is the man that killed creative freedom, expression and thought, he is the art anti Christ, I real pretentious twit, and his isnt a good painter either.

Duchamp was a tenth rate artist at best, and he was in cahoots with all the uber rich people of his day, most notably peggy guggenheim.

Yes! He inspired the present flow of boring sludge out there that puts you to sleep, even though his own work is only partly boring.
