ok, so this is a long shot, but since this is one of the few videos featuring this specific model, i was wondering if anyone has a PDF of an owner's manual or tech specs for the hammond piper II? i am looking desperately for them as i am considering trying to chop and convert mine into a portable. any help is greatly appreciated!
@luxvoyager1111 Thanks for the kind words! I apologize, but I do not have an owners manual nor do I have a PDF of one. After a search I could only find original piper manuals. You want to check out ebay periodically or ask some people on hammond forums. Organ repair people might also be able to help you out (there are some guys out there who love hammonds and they'll give you some advice by phone for free). You can always try to contact Hammond-Suzuki USA as well. Good luck!
Nice tune. Hey, if you've got that M3 running by now try this- put the vibrato and chorus tab right in the middle, just find that little sweet spot. Okay, can you hear the 'hidden leslie' tone? Now go one better, take out the tube which governs the volume for the 'high'-'low' on chorus vibrato and put a hotter tube in it's place. Sorry I am remembering this off the top of my head. I bought my M3 at a thrift & it had that tube missing. When I got home I had tube w/ the same pins, but hotter 12b7?
@paulj0557 Wow!! I wish I had known that when I had access to my M3. Now I'm literally thousands of miles away from it. That is such a cool idea though! If only I could get an M3 in Japan.
@morrissteven Are old Yamaha Electones readily available on craigslist there in Japan...? Do they use craigslist? I suppose I could look. What is it like there as far as used gear of old, do the Japanese hang onto vintage gear like we do in the States? I do know one thing, when I lived in Hollywood in the mid to late 80's guys from Japan were flocking to the Sunset Blvd. guitar shps and buying up all of the 58' Sunburst Les Paul's. I told a friend recently, ' Yeah, they paid 30 grand!',now? 100!
@paulj0557 Last I checked craigslist doesn't get used much in Japan (and only in big cities if at all). I know some guitar collectors and builders in my area and I've heard of stories of them and their friends going to such shops during the "bubble years" and doing just what you speak of! Believe it or not, but the resale value of vintage gear/botique gear in Japan is outrageous. Even with shipping/customs it's cheaper to import most gear.
I have a feeling your vocal register is lower than Ben Gibbards, but it's not a bad thing at all. It makes for a much mellower version, especially with that programmed beat. I like it.
I gave the old Piper II to a friend... so it's gone! I replaced it with a Hammond M3, though. The M3 is a way more serious organ... but it also has a couple of problems. I just gotta replace a few tubes and the power cord and (probably) oil the motor and clean the gunk out to get it running.
I dunno where you live, but craigslist is a good place to find some of this kinda stuff. (and so are swap meets)
It's a hammond piper II organ. I got it at the swap meet near my house for $25... it came with a bench, too. It's pretty limited as some of it has stopped working (the "soloist" buttons) since I had to move it to multiple rooms over the last year.
The chords are correct as far as I can tell, but I think on the album they might voice them slightly differently... (the C chord sounds like a diff voicing to me). I think when they play it live they use different voicings as well. I also came in on the 4th beat of the drum machine.
I appreciate it though! I'll start putting more videos up!
Hey man great job!

My vocal range was WAY lower than his when I made this... I have worked and worked, though, and it's gotten higher-- not as high as his, though.

haha, yes well unfortunately he's probably only third from the top of vocal ranges behind the guy from the darkness and James Mercer!

It is indeed a hammond... but I'm afraid it's only a piper II (not a good one). Thanks though!

That's so nerdy!
It sounds really good.
It sounds like something they'd do as Postal Service! With a bit more techno sounds, it'd be perfect!
