No it was played live, he had a 303 or a 909 on stage with some more stuff... it definitely wasn't a vinyl or mp3. Improvised on the spot ;-)

He usually has a 909 when DJing, especially around that period but he tends to use the 909 to add extra percussion. The version that you can hear is chopped up either on vinyl (my guess) or maybe CD (but I doubt it). As Jeff Mills did this tune in the analogue domain it would be incredibly hard to MIDI everything together to a degree of consistency. When he uses the 909 he does so without MIDI and gets it in time in a similar way to how he mixes vinyl, by riding the tempo.
