  • Don't think this is very Winterish at all. The slide style is not even remotely close to WInter so the only thing that has any Winter in it is the title. Love Govan, but this should be called something else.

  • @vexamatic Johnny Winter Style TRACK, the track is winter's style, not the playing.

  • @pepectm Sorry. I have every Winter Album, have seen him live a million times, this is just not a Winter style track. Oh well!

  • @vexamatic

    How about' illustrated man'?

  • that is slide of satan

  • All the negative comments are just pure denial.

Listen to his body of work and tell me he isn't any good, or you "have students better than this".

    Gimme a break.

  • these arguments are only really found on guitar videos, go watch some violinists or piano videos no one is saying how somehow a complete understanding of technique and theory leads to lack of "soul." if anything it would lead to more soul since guthrie is able to express himself more fluently and in more ways without having to worry about hittin wrong notes

  • only hav one thing to say u ppl are repetedly mentioning bad comments about someone who can melt ur face off play COUNTRY. if ur saying thats missing soul ur just saying u dont know music and how much it takes to play something like that how much theory u must know how much time and skill and practice and work u put into it theres only one thing that stands betwen idiots like u ppl who dont like this and ppl who like this... and that is they are musically developped into knowing what is good.

  • winter would wipe the floor with govan

  • Johnny Winter would not play with a sound like that. His sound is much rawer.

  • Technical...good skills....missing soul

  • He just smokes pot and plays guitar all day? Damn, that's what I do....If Guthrie is ready for a Florida vacation, he's more than welcome.....

  • Sorry,I got students better than this. Back to listening to JW.

  • @guitarflorida1 in your dreams

  • @shadowofthenighthawk I know eh :P lmao what a condescending douche

  • not bad

  • @wtfievh...... Yes he can't play soccer

  • @Samijn You sure?

  • @BoogieEngineer hahaha you are right. I don't. Honestly I think the fucker can.

  • reminds me of sonny landreth,

    alot.

    sweet.

  • what tunings this in?

  • Listen to this with your eyes closed..can you honestly say you've ever heard better slide guitar??

  • guthrie govan is certainely one of the best guitar players in the world ,but when it come to the slide no one can touch derek trucks, no one.

  • its a pack o rolling papper..where'd ya think he gets his inspiration from? :D

  • holy shit! He makes his slide playing sound like a harmonica! Such massive mid range tone! wow this is just freakin killer cool. The backing tracks sound really good too from all the ones I been listening to him play over, looks like a really really good practrice tool. IC.

  • 0:34 lol you hear glass break

  • 全然ジョニー・ウィンターじゃないじゃん。

  • Wow, this is cool. Govan's ability to mimic these cats is really uncanny.

    Quite the monstahman.

  • Love how you can still tell it's Guthrie even with a slide!

His soul is so clearly expressed on his instrument regardless.

He could play this with no arms

  • also, the tone at times sounds like a harmonica.... good shit

  • at 14-15 seconds is he hitting an artificial hamonic there? sounds unreal!

  • very nice!

  • wow seems so average for once...

  • @dustyk i'd like to be this average!

  • Check out Sonny Landreth or Dave Hole for stellar slide playing.

  • OK, MORE OF THIS.

Finally a track where the guy isn't just running endlessly through his scales like a high school kid on crack, and it ends in mid-holyshit, after only 1:18. More, please, of the bluesy slide--er, side of Guthrie Govan

  • he makes me wanna practice until my arms fall down

  • What does he have in his finger?

  • I suspect its not cigarettes he rolls with that paper ;)

  • Awesome stuff Dude, totally

  • The papers are there to raise the action for slide playing and to dampen the strings at the same time. You are both right!

  • @bluesjamtracks - They can't be Guthrie's though or they would be king size. nudge nudge.. ;)

  • @bluesjamtracks

dont forgewt their main purpose... to get high !

  • i guess he has the papers over the 2nd fret so the action gets higher for slide.

  • it's actually to mute the strings.

  • im glad he does alot more than shred, I hate boring shred...

  • it's not that shred is boring. it's that shred is hard to phrase well, but guthrie does it pretty efficiently.

  • Pretty slick slide playing to be sure. Nicely done.

  • YOU ARE GREAT!

  • This juy just smokes pot and plays the guitar all day... his skills are insane

  • doesn't everyone? i do

  • @sayocean69 Pot? Nah he's way too fast for that. He tweaks for days at a time with his guitar. A real speed freak.

  • It's a packet of rizla put under the strings so it's easier to play slide guitar. He does this because his guitar has pretty low action, and to get a decent 'Slide' tone you need higher string action so the notes ring out.

  • you're definitely wrong. it's to mute the strings, so you don't have strings running together...

  • the main reason is definitely to raise the strings action for slide playing. when he wants to dampen the strings he uses something else as you may see in some of his vids where he is doing crazy tapping stuff. That said, it also does dampen the strings.. just not as the primary purpose

  • Did he put a candybar in between his guitar strings and neck?? lol that's what it looks like!

  • the only thing i could figure is that its like a capo that holds the E chord so he dosnt have to retune it.... but thats a guess and now that you mention it, it looks like a heath bar lol!

  • its possible it could be something to raise the the action on his guitar,as you need much higher action to play slide

  • It's actually a packet of cigarette papers. The guitar playing is not the only thing that smokes!

  • lol,I think he sounds even better after I smoke,,,no he smokes,no I smoke,ahh geez nevermind,lol

  • @bluesjamtracks i've been trying to figure out what it was for a long time.. i guess i'll have to look like a stoner again.. thought those days were over :D

  • Maybe but it looks like a "smint" box!

  • Officially my favorite guitarist ever. I've heard people that come close, but Guthrie made that guitar belt out notes like Aretha Franklin. Amamzing...

  • * Amazing lol

  • swietnie grasz

  • and yes that comment was a reply to you Eldaveer.

  • 0:15 how did he made an artificial harmonic without using a pick? did he use his thumb for that? ._.

  • Derek Trucks does it often when playing slide. Say we're playing in A, you put your slide on the root note, 5th fret of the E string. Theh with your picking hand, put you finger on top of the 17 fret (which would be and octave above the fret where the slide should be resting) and pick it, which creates a harmonic. There are other ways, which are mostly accidental, but when used right can sound great.

  • I think it's a natural harmonic, then he slides up, i've seen Bumblefoot use the same technique but on a fretless guitar.

  • I agree, thats what it looks like to me.Question is what cant Guthrie do?Wish there were more than 1:17 on this one,Id like to see more slide techniques from Govan.I am sure this is just the tip of the iceburg of what he can do with one.

  • Of course there is the CB1 moving on vid but that to is just over a minuite.

  • I know what you mean! The Jam tracks are about 5 minutes each, i'd love to see Govan play for the full length of the track.

I am glad he did these videos as I bought some the other day, and they're great to improvise to, although, obviously I am no Guthrie Govan ;)

  • LOL,I hear ya,I bought all of these tracks also and man they are great.I like them better than alot of my backing tracks because alot of the sound like a mechanical loop more than a backing track. These are a great quality and great priced piece of practice gear IMO,Good to rap with ya guy,peace..

  • yeah definatly, I mean for the amount of use you're going to get out of them, not to mention how much they improve you're improvising :)

Although I can just imagine Guthrie walking into the 'bluesjamtracks' studio with a hangover, picking up a guitar and slamming these out, the guy needs no effort to do these insane solos. what an amazing album also. =D

  • Yeah,I bet the Guys at BJT line up to watch him lay it down to.Ive been a Vai,Satch,Petrucci fan bigtime over the last 20 yrs and Vai is my fav guitarist. But ive got to admit what I can clearly see Govans improv is light years better than Vai's.And because he mixes up so many styles so fluently he is just doing things way beyond anything Vai,Satch,Petrucci have been doing IMO anyway.Cant wait for the new C.D.

  • I really do love Vai,but Govans fluidity and phrasing nomatter what he is playing is second to none.I specially like when he goes into those long diminished runs he does with the minor taps and slides at the turn arounds are simply insane. That is just impressive stuff as smooth as Guthrie does it.

  • Ron Thal has some tastey diminished chops as well.Anyone can do a simple pentatonic patterns but the way Ron and Guthrie sequence these runs is genius.Lucky times we are living in to have such variety of talent out there.

  • How can i get a sick slide tone like that.

  • Practice, lol,Guthrie could make a stringed broom stick with a string going to the bottom of a dixi cup,and it would sound amazing held to your ear..

  • Actually, you are exactly right. The answer is PRACTICE. Now, granted, GG has a hell of a lot of talent, but I absolutely guarantee you that he has spent YEARS living, breathing, eating, drinking, and sleeping with his guitar. You don't get this good without that, no matter how much talent you may have.

  • Couldnt agree more,Talent will get you so far,but Govan is way beyond just talented he is a true master.

  • That is probably the most true thing ever posted on youtube. Thumbs up bro!!

  • this guy is ridicolously great.. he has the licks, he's got the tone, he's got technique, he can write very good songs...go Guthrie, go!!

  • if you wanna see someone totally own the guitar, playing slide in standard tuning, check out Brett Garsed's stuff. It defies belief...

  • Mr. Garsed is amazing!! I love his track "Undoing." So tasty.

  • wow...

  • learn to read

  • why guthrie why you dont have any blues album or an album with your jazz quartet why!??

  • he has an album with the fellowship, the basement club band (which is a quintet btw)

  • johnny winter style track...not riffs, and yes this man is demon on the fretboard. Agree with hypnus

  • I have yet to hear Guthrie play something I do not like. He's awesome, he's the man and he is hot.

  • not surprised he's hot with all that hair.

  • it's the track in Johnny style...not the playing

  • I love Johnny's playing, he lives around here, and I have even seen him at Toad's Place, but this guy is pretty much in a league above Johnny.

  • Was I referring to the point of technical abilities in one? No, I wasn't. I was simply referring to the matter of Johnny's style. And when talking about leagues, I don't give a flying jesus about his technical abilities if there is no art in the plain performance. Art is a very discussable conception, and cannot be judged as a quality work or as an piece of prosaic trash by mattering the simplicity or hardness of the execution.

  • haha. is this per chance Tim Halcomb using a different account?

I find it hard to believe an actual person would think that.

  • You know its true : )

  • it's just my imagination or it sounds almost like a damn blues harp tone.

what a sound. amazing. this guy knows very well what he does though we like it or not. omg what a blues tone

  • man he can make me cry...man he is absolutely awsome

  • wtf trumphet sound... its great

  • I'm still waiting to hear him play "Giant Steps" and "Countdown". Frank Gambale says playing through changes is what separates the men from the boys.

  • hahahaha that is funny...Gambale is the man

  • you rock!!! man

  • This guy is good and...Johnny Winter..theres a name from the past.

  • Excuse my language, but this was flipping great!

  • hahahahah

  • Govan has perfected every style of playing. It takes most years to learn just one style or technic. Govan has mastered all of them at his young age. I don't think this guy sleeps or eats.

  • I guess people feed him as they pass by LOL

  • he is not that young :)))

he is born 1971 so that makes him 38

  • Guthrie Govan is the MAN !!!!! AMAZING

  • This guy is the Swiss Army Knife of guitar players. Is there nothing he cannot play? He must be stopped!

  • this machine plays slide too!!! is no one safe?

  • Lol. NO ONE IS SAFE! True!

  • Fantastic slide guitar work!

  • I love this Guthrie. And NOBODY can say that you were shredding to fast or tapping too much on this track lol. Not with THAT thing on your finger.

  • wow! that was nice dude! pls watch our video,, just type daneves we are the rocknplay band.. tnx a lot! great job! [-;

  • That might have something to do with the fact that it's Guthrie Govan playing, not Johnny Winter, eh?

  • I agree with your username. You really are. It says Johnny Winter style TRACK. The backing TRACK is Johnny Winter style.

  • what is his tuning?

  • I thought I was hearing derek trucks. man.

  • was thinking the same thing

  • I thought the same thing

  • make johnny n duane real proud , smokin , get together with derek next move here , rockin

  • 00:49

  • I actually thought this sounded more like Jeff Beck than the vid that was supposed to sound like Beck. Not sure if Beck would have used a slide, but that's the sound.

No, I still can't play like that. I don't have the hair for it. &:)

  • this man must've sold his soul for rock n' roll

    long live guthrie govan

  • nice :)

  • He doesnt know how to ride a bike or swim, he just plays guitar all day. That is so fuckin cool!

  • Is that true ????

  • yeah !

  • Petty Shit, you gotta problem with his hair, listen to that brilliant guitar.Idiots

  • guthrie govan is the MAN. Love all his blues jams. Althought perhaps in need of a haircut i must say..

  • to be honest, I'd kill for his hair, I wonder if it comes with his guitar skills....

  • thats the Jesus look..every 4th or 5th musician west of the mississippi & who plays slide guitar on at least 10% of his music has that hair-style.. it's in all the musician-style mags from april 1992 onward..c'mon get with the program..!!

  • Hey!!! Satriani!!!

what a great guy for a G3 Tour....

  • i dont know if satriani would like that. Satriani would sound like crap compared to this man;)!! guthrie is just soo good!

  • so true!

  • Guthrie is da man!

  • Guthrie is GOD, indeed. Every era needs its guitar god and GG is THE ONE for the next decade or two.

  • guitarttimman is a pointless twat. If you want to laff your cock off go have a look. He really is shit but he thinks he's as good as Guthrie LOL!!

  • mate, this guy is a GOD, fives explains it all!!

  • sounds great, nice tone, great vibrato

  • Wtf are u talking about. this guys is one of the best in the world. you're son, I assume, is not

  • Either you're a very poor troll, or an exceedingly insecure individual, living vicariously through the distorted view you hold of your child.

  • Check him out of you dont believe me. Just search guitarttimman and enjoy this mans remarkable playing and therapy sessions.

  • Mr. Halcombe, your son plays a half assed version of Guthries improvisation. Make sure you know what your talking about before confirming your ignorance and stupidity to the online world. Have a nice day dipshit!!

  • What's the matter with my Grandson's playing yo'll blasphemer. OK his guitar may be out of tune and most of the notes in the wrong order and he pulls ugly faces but he's a good boy. Learnt from my Slim Whitman records. He thinks he's good so to hell with you

  • What that thing on the end of the neck?

  • That's just a packet of cigarette rolling papers that he inserts to raise the action to make it easier to play slide.

  • guthrie can pretty much do anything he pleases. the most amazing player alive today.

  • not only he's a great player, but he's terrific with the bottleneck too. woah... too much talent for one single guitarist! has he any flaws?!?

  • not a one! i mean look at him, he is obviously a resurrected jesus, jesus of guitar shreditude. he totally trumps my jesusness and shredingness by a million.

  • not a one! i mean look at him, he is obviously a resurrected jesus, jesus of guitar shreditude. he totally trumps my jesusness and shredingness by a million.

  • Never mind Hendrix. The Spice girls. Which one to enjoy first. Mmmmmnnn Ginger Spice.

  • NOT THE SPICE GIRLS BUT KATE BUSH

  • I liked the blond one, baby spice maybe? to me she was the dirtiest of them all...

  • No turning back after taking Scary up the arse!

I wouldn't touch Posh with yours. Ugly cow. Tyrebiter Posh.

  • Now then Baby Spice smeared with honey...

  • Spice Girls are fucking reptiles. KATE BUSH and I bet she got a BUSH....a Jet Black BUSH

  • Oh how I hope she doesn't shave under her arms. No Bics for Kate

  • Scary man.

  • I reckon if Ginger Spice walked into Guthrie's room at night he'd shit himself

  • If Ginger stumbled in to my room one night naked I might ...just the once!

  • I don't understand this Spice Girls thing. Ginger Minge, Stick Insect, Hammer House of Horrors, Hockey Player, School Girl - totally lost. Now if you were talking about Kate Bush!!!!!

  • Jesus Christ ...sex with Spice Girls on a channel about Guthrie Govan you people are depraved.

  • Damn! Guthrie owns Johny Winter, Derek Trucker, and that chum Duane Allman. John McCarthy said it beter, " British music and musicians are the best!"

If was not for a British musician, Jimi Hendrix would not ever been discovered!

  • first of all, you spelt johnny winter wrong (and he doesnt own him, because johnny winter could eat him up and spit him out with his guitar skill) you also spelt derek trucks wrong (not trucker) who was also a child prodigy. Jimmy hendrix sucks, and he is overrated. Personally, I believe that Guthrie is better than Jimi Hendrix. Duane Allman was a genius...dont put him down. Study your music a bit more and than talk...

    Thanks.
