Mercedes-Benz W123 300D Turbo Diesel Engine Running

Turbo diesel engines never been that wonderfull as many say. I own a W124 with a 2.5 Turbo Diesel engine (285k km), maintenance always done on Mercedes, constantly have lots of oil leaks and had already one trouble with the engine. The Flywheel broke for 2 times and the differential is always leaking oil. Reliable diesel engines don't have turbo. I know someone with the 5000cc gasoline version with near 400k km and no issues at all but don't know if they are as good as diesel ones.

My '85 300D never made a sound like that, the only sound my turbo makes is a long whistle when it's spooled up but the boost is dumped into the hole in the wastegate housing to increase fuel econ.

The aircleaner is of and the oil is cold. They are noisy at idle.  Even new. My 240d i just rebuilt is as noisy as when I started. On the road, can't hear a thing!

Certainly NOT the 3liters turbo-engine(no matter whether it is the W123 OM617.952 engine or the W124 OM 603.962 engine).They often quit if pressed recklessly,since they all have a temperature problem as a result of the missing intercooler.This pherhaps does not occur so frequently in countries with a speed limit,but in Germany(autobahn),where the cars were used to be driven at high rev,the engines broke down by their hundreds.This said,mainly the OM617 must be considered as a failed design.

What are you talking about? The 617 is iron and is has very good durability... Mine in my 300SD has over 439,000 miles on it. The 603 has problems with the cylinder head!!!

i actually think otherwise. my uncle owned a 300d, and the engine blew on him three times. all three times, the engine was replaced with one under 60000 miles. he finally dumped it, after spending over 5000 dollars on it. 3 years later, he buys a 240d, with 180000 miles. he ran it until it was given away, at 410000 miles. no hate intended, just informing
