this guy would make alot of money if he knew so much about transmissions this guy could be a millionaire all day dealing with transmission. rebuilding them or fixing them
I have a '94 Jaguar XJ40 with a ZF4HP24 transmission. It doesn't always shift smoothly. Are you familiar with these tranys? If yes what would be the typical problems with these units? The fluid is nice cherry color and on the correct level.
I took the pan off and changed the filter and seal and replaced the radiator ( leaking) and now it wont move or do anything at all. starts right up but does nothing in any gear. the problem was the tcc or something the we just unplugged drove for 1 day and now nothing. was told it might be some fluid pump shaft or something. this is on a 93 Chevy cavalier.Im thinking of taking it apart and if I cant fix it then junking the car even though its real nice for an extra car
@wph1138 If you're willing to do the work, this clip comes from a complete rebuild DVD that will take through the whole process...you can get it from our BoxWrench site if you want.
You'd need to get a rebuild kit for your trans though.
@BoxWrench i wouldn't mind doing it myself to save the labor on it. And knowing i did it myself would be cool. The car is useless right now either way so I would not lose anything by trying. I have worked on cars my whole life but never transmission.Im just not sure what the skill level needs to be on this. i have changed trani's b4 but never taken one apart.
@wph1138 The car starting doesn't have much to do with the transmission except for one thing... there is a neutral safety switch in most transmissions that won't allow you to start the engine unless the trans is shifted into park or neutral.
Did you do anything to the transmission that may have effected the neutral safety switch?
Hey, you forgot the check ball that goes into the trans case near the 3-4 accumulator. Or did you put one of those cheesy ass shift kits that tell you to discard the accumulator check ball?
I just watched the video. I was wondering have you ever installeda shift kit and took it for a test drive and it just loses all pressure and just locks up won't move or nothing what causes this ?
If it lost line pressure on startup, most likely cause is the boost valve snap ring was not installed correctly and it fell out on startup. This results in very weak forward gear, and no reverse.
Otherwise I'd suspect an assembly fault in the valvebody. Most likely a check ball.
The music makes this video seem really epic.

About how much would it cost for a shop to install a shift kit in my 97 z28 with a 4L60e?
stinebrook 2 years ago
Around $60 or so for a shift kit and probably around $200 for labor.

Good vid all the same. I was always told auto transmissions are the most complex bit of the car. seems that lifetime understanding is correct.
Practice makes perfect I guess.

TransGo all the way! There's only one checkball that is left out in the latest kit, but the hole is at least plugged up.
