Had to laugh at the 'angry wife' remark. It's very much the other way around in my house. My boyfriend goes mental if I spill even a drop of water lol. Good video from a female reefer.
Did these guys begin the cycling w/ the 2 power heads and a the live rock? I am guessing the two power heads circulating with the rock is good enough for an intitial cycling? Does the protein skimmer + carbon canister combo replace your standard hang/canister filters? Thanks for the info; Great videos!
Dont buy a test kit. waste of money. water changes filter with mesh and carbon , skimmer, gravel cleaner and more water changes. and cleaner wrasse or shrimp. all you ned trust me
It's okay to dump saltwater down the drain? I heard that the salt will kill the beneficial bacteria in my septic system and cause problems. I also heard that the salt will then leach out into the drain field and kill all of my grass. Was I misinformed? Because I would REALLY like to start using one of those syphon hoses if I can.
@BulkReefSupplyCom: 1st off GREAT VIDEO'S! I'd like to ask, if not too much, can you please post up the pricings of EACH item you "actually" used in the videos in the description? I would like to do an exact setup, therefore, I need to know my budget. A reply stating you'd updated the pricings, etc. would be great!
I love this series, only complaint is your explanation of the nitrogen cycle - Ammonia is first converted to nitrites which are as deadly as ammonia before being converted from nitrites to nitrates. A test kit for nitrites is essential.
@10GalReef Thank you, we just released episode three yesterday : ) We talk about fish food and responsible feedings, auto top off systems, gfo and phosban reactors as well as add a cpr aquafuge hang on refugium.
This series is definitely helping take the guesswork out of setting up your first Saltwater aquarium. Your step by step approach is a great way illustrate the benefits of using available technology to help maintain a more stable environment (although it isn't need to get started) I'd give this video 2 thumbs up if I could but YouTube will only let me give it one. Nice work!
@MonkinOut Thank you, I think this is the best complement we have received. Feedback like this is exciting because it is exactly what we are trying to do, show how to set up a tank and be successful without all the BS. All of the equipment in some way is optional, we just want to give a brief overview of what each piece does and what to expect out of it. It is our sincere hope that anyone who views this completed series can get 90% of the knowledge they need to start a tank successfully.
Amazing video. I have wanted to convert my 90G FW to SW for a long time. This video series is just the thing I needed to push me over the edge. Thank you guys.
I have 1 question. Currently my 90G sits at the foot of my bed. It's very silent, I have an Eheim2217 for filtration. My only experience with SW tanks has always shown they're very noisy. Especially skimmers.
If I were to start FOWLR, I just don't know what equipment to use. Any recommendations on how to setup?
@jvin85 Well proper pump selection will be key in keeping noise down. Eheims is a great option. Maybe hydor koralia powerheads for flow as well. I would check out the video on the ultra silent tank overflow . You probably won’t like this but if it is in your bedroom where you sleep you might want to consider a more expensive skimmer like the vertex alpha . The only thing more expensive than buying the right protein skimmer is spending money on the med level option first.

@jvin85 Noise level on a skimmer depends on a couple things. What each individual really thinks is quiet which can vary drastically. Silence is generally associated with high quality craftsmanship. The most unacceptable noise comes from vibrations and the vibrations often come from unrefined products. That doesn’t mean that are not good, just that they are not precision machined. For that reason most of the really quiet skimmers are expensive. I recommend the vertex alpha.
The fish don't jump out? I enjoyed absorbing all the helpful tips and information. Those reactors are very cool - I may try to hook up a denitrifying tumbler.
thanks ryan your the man i like your style great products, amazing customer service and the best advice a one stop shop for all your saltwater needs keep it up im def a lifetime customer
@joe0813 we cycled the tank using biospira which we have had very good luck with in the past. The tank has been cycled for a couple weeks, we were waiting to add more fish until we could do this episode and show the acclimation with the chromis. To be honest I assumed biospira to be one of those snake oil miracle cures but we have had remarkable results.
@BulkReefSupplyCom oooh i just didnt know if you had already cycled the tank... im new to saltwater and im currently setting up a 75 reef ready but its a very expensive hobby
@Teslasdik ya, there are a 100 ways to do this. We don't want to put everyone to sleep showing every last way to do everything. We debated which method to show, ended up with the one that required the least amount of components and included things a new hobbyist is most likely to have around the house. They might not have a specimen container but that can be subbed out with a 100 household things as well : )
@edgar57639 I set it up to a rate that I believe is removing the most uneaten food and fish waste possible. I don’t believe in the concept of overskimming. No matter what we do our tanks are going to be 100 times dirtier than most parts of the ocean where our livestock is collected. In most cases I am closer to wet than dry.
i'm about to set up a 40 gallon reef tank as well and i was wondering if you know about how many pounds of rock that is, i really like the pukani but i just don't want to over order!
@DallasPrestonMusic I am not sure exactly but i am guessing that it is around 25-30 pounds of live rock. Pukani is pretty light but that one piece is rather large. 3/4 pound per gallon of aquarium size is generally good with pukani.
