u guys think the new way of kicking(muay thai style) is better because of kyokushin etc..
really show ur knowledge.yeah u can knock somone out with those kicks, but with kanazawa kicks, jus one will, everytime ,kill u.there no knockouts in karatedo.
u understood stance,basic 101,.if u didnt know,ur not going to find it.like i said,"its not for u"
Many viewers of Kanazawa's movements in various videos are deceived by his ease and smoothness into thinking he has no speed or power. Let me assure them that, indeed, he always has had speed, power, timing, accuracy, and a keen mind that has foiled other advanced karateka. He just never wasted thought or effort on unnecessary and extraneous movement. No flash, no gimmicks to impress gullible audiences. It has been the same also with his speech and behavior. Admirable character.
@cassavaeater Yes, Mr. Kanazawa told me that he had studied thorougly Tai Chi. There are many levels of Tai Chi from simple exercise for good health to very esoteric, strong techniques that actually can be applied to self-defense. He said that it took a long time for him truly to understand it (one of the most intelligent karateka I ever have known!), which means to me that he mastered it and applied it to his Shotokan karate.
@BelloBudo007 I am not quite sure what you mean. As far as my previous statement, I simply am reporting what he told me when I was living with him in London.
@sfkcbf - I'm sorry about the confusion. I'd tried to copy & paste a you tube reference in response to your comment "No flash, no gimmicks to impress gullible audiences" that was of a katana demonstration at the 9th SKIF World Championship. Unfortunately for some reason it won't copy & paste. So if you were living with him in London you may have the initials N.A. then?
@BelloBudo007 Some demonstration material may or may not be appropriate. Does the audience truly understand what they see? Can most people train to duplicate what is shown? Often not. A few masters with remarkable presence of mind e.g. Master Kanazawa may be a small minority who can do realistically what is demonstrated in a slowed-down, stylized manner not too fast for the audience to see.
ALL sensei should get there students to do this exercise, you will then see just how poor at kicking they really are. The hanging belt will tell you wheather the kick is going in the correct direction & not scooping as most do,it will show poor hip's,& if you drop a kick after exercution or pull it back the same way it went.Who care's about the sound been off,the training exercise is a winner.
I wish the world had lots more people with the kindness a hart that Kanazawa Kancho has he's a legend Oss.

I've done this drill before. We do it every couple of months. I hate it, but it's definitely useful.

As far as I know Kanazawa also learned tai chi. So it could be he develop of soft and gentle tai chi movements combined with hard and fast of karate.

@BelloBudo007 No, I was there two generations ago, 1966-67, the years I also founded the University of Liverpool Karate Club.
