There are people representing China in the U.S. who are seeking our government for help to give rights to the people there. Did you know that? The citizens of China deserve better. There are many of us who still believe in the teachings of Confucious and many other noble philosophers from China who died trying to create peace. Even those people were given crap about what they were preaching. What I don't understand is why there are issues that are obviously important to address that aren't being addressed? It is healthy for the citizens of your country to communicate, especially if you're the leader, so that you know where to lead your people.

Ma ying jiu is just a decent and rational person who, like all politicians in Taiwan, cannot tell the people of Taiwan the truth; it is that independence is hopeless unless a war breaks out and the mainland loses. Status quo cannot be maintained indifinitely.

After anhother 20-30 years of peace, the mainland will simply become far too powerful for Taiwan to avert reunification. Taiwan's energy supply will be doubtful to the business community. Taiwan will wilt otherwise.

i dont think there is any inherent antagonism, if there wasnt communist pseudo-dictatorship in China, i think there would be far less anxiety and tension. also, the concept of being a country or state has itself changed dramatically over the centuries. the old imperial sinospheric model of asia cant exist now that areas around china are not merely weak vassals, and it must exist in a global world w/ world powers that the sinocentric imperial model didnt contend with (EU, Russia, US, Brazil)
