  • Táimse im’chodladh (‘s ná dúistear mé)

    1. Tráthnóinín déanach i gcéin cois leasa dom, táimse im’ chodhladh ‘s ná dúistear mé, Sea do dhearcas lem’ thaobh an spéirbhean mhaisiúil. Táimse im’ chodladh ‘s ná dúistear mé. Ba bhachallach péarlach ó dréimreach barrachas a carnfholt craobhach ag titim léi ar bhaillechrith. ‘S í ag caitheamh na saighead trím thaobh do chealg mé. Táimse im’ chodladh ’s ná dúistear mé.

  • 1. And I out late one afternoon far away by a fairy fort, I am asleep ‘n don’t wake me,I saw by my side the shiny heavenly woman. I am asleep ‘n don’t wake me. They were pearly falling curls, her waves (lit. branches) of hair that fell trembling to the groundand she was sending a sword through me that stung me [deep]. I am asleep‘n don’t wake me.

  • 2. Is mó buachaillín óg a tógadh go ceannasach, táimse im’ chodladh ‘s ná dúistear mé, do cuireadh le foirneart anonn thar na farraige. Táimse im’ chodladh ‘s ná dúistear mé. Go bheicfeadh an lá a mbeidh ár ar Shasanaigh ughaim ar a ndroim is iad ag treabhadh is ag branar dúinn. Gan mise a bheith ann mura dtéannam an maide leo. Táimse im’ chodladh ‘s ná dúistear mé.

  • 2. ‘Tis many the young boy that was forcefully taken off, I am asleep ‘n don’t wake me, that was put to slave away on the far side of the sea. I am asleep ‘n don’t wake me. Would that I see the day when the English (lit. Saxons) were bent over and they plowing and tilling for us, without me there, unless I would be offering them the plow! I am asleep ‘n don’t wake me.

  • Ceol go hÁlainn. Guth go hÁlainn.

  • I moved to Ireland a few weeks ago and, to my delight, he is playing live later this month. Time to reconnect with his voice!!!

  • Sublime, song and singer. A perfect match of melody and voice. You'll find few performances to match it on youtube.

  • gorgeous

  • This is a type of song known as an aisling - a dream. It's an 18th-century mode, which always follows the same pattern: the poet is wandering and meets a beautiful woman (representing Ireland; these songs were written in code as singing about Ireland overtly could get you hanged at the time). There's a formal description of her beauty, and then she makes an appeal for his help.

Incidentally, this was the song Oscar Wilde used to sing as a lullaby to rock his little sons to sleep.

  • OMG! what amazing music.

  • oh my God I think I've died and gone to heaven!

  • Iarla O'Lionard should be promoted world wide.He has the most heartfelt voice of any singer that I know. His voice, combined with this song equals Heaven. Just awesome.

  • how or where or is there an english translation...

  • this is so freakin magical.

  • Words just cannot describe how beautiful this is.Thanks for posting.A pure gem.

  • The BBC have been repeating the series (now halfway through the six programmes) This has to be the most wonderful song. I have always been drawn to the Gaelic, yet I am of Welsh and Saxon origin. Maybe, in another life ...... who knows!

  • 'Táimse im'chodladh' is the correct name of this song for anybody who is wondering why they can't find it under Iarla Ó Lionáird's name online. It's much more beautiful than 'I am Asleep'. Thanks to the person who posted it nonetheless. I'm just shocked it has only got 23.462 views so far.

  • This is a beautiful song in a beautiful language. Is there a version with English subtitles.

  • i cannot believe this song is so short, i close my eyes & listen, it feels like hes singing allot longer, if the druids had singers, they were like this

    maith an fear I.

  • Look up your local Conradh na Gaeilge. They're a great help. I'm 33, English and now living in Westport and I've been getting evening classes in Castlebar for the last year and I'm currently in the middle of a 3 week course in Conamara. It can be done... Go n'eiri an bothar leat Deborah!

  • Just sublime. I wish I understood the language.

    -jcr

  • learn it, it needs saving

  • Iarla O Lionaird was the most beautiful voice, male or female, in this Highland Sessions set. The whole production was

    outstanding.

  • There is something so magical about Irish music, sending me pictures of flowing rivers and fantasy creatures.

  • Is there an English translation of the lyrics somewhere?

  • there is an album called Eist aris it has the version of delores keane singing... the sleeve notes have english and irish lyrics - also the record has some other great songs with paul brady and brian kennedy.. i am asleep and do not wake me is the first line of this beautiful song... there is another album called eist in the same vein with irish songs in english and as gaelige... hope this helps!

  • I am sleeping, do not wake me

    I hear you calling

Come back again, Ill show you how

I am sleeping, do not wake me

    The day is dawning

Come back again, dont wake me now

Just look high and low, and search round the town

For the wildflower where we met the first time

If you pull the petals all the spell may be broken

Come back again, dont wake me now

  • This is what real singing is all about.

    Bob Ash

  • Here are the Irish-language lyrics:

"Tráthnóinín déanach i gcéin cois leasa dom

Táimse im' chodhladh is ná dúistear mé

Sea dhearcas lem' thaobh an spéirbhean mhaisiúil

  • @bb3ca201 sorry- I hit the "vote down" by mistake- thanks so much for the lyrics.

  • @bb3ca201 thanks for that very difficult to decipher some of the words it's one lovely song

  • @lightn56

No problem. Iarla sings the words very clearly; some words may be pronounced according to the area where he grew up (which may make it difficult for some).

    Enjoy the song, mo chara!

  • Is mó buachaillín óg a thógadh go ceannasach

Táimse im' chodhladh is ná dúistear mé

Do cuireadh le foirmeart anonn thar farraige

Táimse im' chodhladh is ná dúistear mé

Táimse im' chodhladh is ná dúistear mé."

  • Could someone please post lyrics?

  • JMD0429,

If you search "Táimse 'im chodhladh" on YouTube, there's a version of it (sung by a different group) -- but the Irish-language lyrics are there; just follow along...

    Enjoy it...I did

  • Majestic! A wonderful singer, a beautiful song, wonderful arrangement. This is as good as it gets! Where do you Irish get them from??? JC

  • does anybody know where to get the lyrics for this?

  • Excellent, Tom, but you should have left the title in the Irish as it is much more identifiable that way than "I am Asleep". Nice surprise though!

  • can somebody tell me if this is the song/music the titanic music is based on?

  • thank you

  • Excellent. Is there sheet music for violin?

    Mac Campbell

  • Absolutely beautiful. Thank you, Tom for posting this.
