Back in the late '80's a local radio station had on a 'famous' artist (so famous I can't even remember who it was), and during the program he made a cruel remark about Ann's weight. The phone in response was great, but one guy will always be my hero. He said, "I will never touch that beautiful face, but I can listen to that beautiful voice. So, STFU." They bleeped him, of course, but I cheered.
@lovesheart Love is Alive...Great song....Miss Ulrich used to sing it to me as she would play her accoustic guitar she was awesome in so many ways. High School in 1978 was a very troubled time except for those wonderful memories in Miss Ulrich's basement bed room.
Such naturally refined talent is something that is unseen these days. And their stage presence, no matter what song they did, drew you in and encased you in whatever emotion they were putting out. Few performers ever reach this level of amazing.
only to say ===> " MY GOD " :::::: memories back into the guudy old times during the 70´s =====> that was Love, Peace and Happiness .... easy Life and best times ever.... that comes STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART ;-))
Of all the music that Heart has put out, this one is so special to me, I love the words and the creation of the musical instruments that has been used for this song, basically tells it all on how they are TRUE artists, as well as vocals. Such a beautiful song...Heart thank you so much for all that you girls and the band has shared with all of us that do appreciate you much. Redcorvetteful/EBM
Saw them live the first time in Portland ,Me. civic center in 1984. Anne and Nancy doing this song and Nancy with her Gold Ovation. I was right up close. I could`nt help but cry. What a beautiful song.
@wallachinski Nice, they can cause that emotion to well up without warning, they started" these dreams" last time I saw them,I was directly in front of Nance and pressed against the stage and the water works turned on..it was strange as that was never one of my favorites..I always just thought of it as nice and alright. : )
@lovesheart Yeah,it was kind of that way for me,too. I was always into their hard stuff. But there I was right in front of two beautiful women playing this beautiful song, and it just blew me away. One of the highlights of my life.
i love this song. i aways wounderd what it meant. the dog is us and the problems that we deal in life and the butterfly is the freedom that we try to catch or the happiness that we try to hold on to?
I guess it says we keep tryin for the unattainable but they are always a lil out of reach, speaks to the human condition i believe.GREAT CLASSIC TIMELESS TRACK! : )
This ballad is what led my to Heart. I heard it on the radio one day, when I was working in a factory, and I called up the radio and asked who sang it, and the next day I bought one of their greatest hits CDs and it just took off from there.
You bought it on CD? I'm assuming you came to Heart later than the release date of this song then, eh? LOL
I remember Summers in the '70s that were FILLED with Heart playing on the radio in the background. There are parts of my life whose memories are inseparable from the music of Heart, and I treasure them.
I was lucky enough to be raised with the wonders of such music as this. I sometimes wish it could be as simple as it seemed then, but when I hear something like "Dog and Butterfly" I realize it doesn't matter... Peace is where you make it.
I think I can be a bit objective when it comes to rock and roll. See, I didn't even listen to rock and roll as a kid or a teenager, and my teen generation was the 80's not the 70's. I didn't start really listening to rock and roll until the late 80's. And what rock era did I eventually settle on? The 70's of course. Heart, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin. The best.
wilson sisters were born to write and perform some of the best rock and love songs ever. i was 16 during the crazy on you tour and i made sure i got into the agora, an 18 and over club at the time. i am 50 now, and feel lucky that i saw a classic and timeless kick ass band. they are the real deal. long live the wilson sisters. yuzu's mom.
I was a freshman in HS and this is the FIRST record I EVER bought with my own money from Wendy's. I bought this and "Aquaboogie" from George Clinton! What a mix and my music taste is still this diverse!! I STILL LOVE BOTH RECORDS TO THIS VERY DAY!!!
Heart Is certainly a favorite of mine, Ann's vocals are amazing! And Nancy's guitar playing is great! I have seen them in concert twice and they delivered both times!
All time Heart fav. I used to make my big sis Sylvia play this album over n over back when it came out. Album would come out, and so would "The Bong"...he he he! :-) Great memories!!!!!
my favorite song of theirs; an overall great one that lets a lot of instruments shine and still a good dose of Ann's range and talent, which is also in the writing of the song, along with Nancy, which they don't get enough credit for.
I saw Heart on the D&B tour in '78. They got the biggest reaction from the audience when they played this song. People were cheering and clapping. I remember Ann saying, "Aw, you guys are supposed to like the hard stuff." It was beautiful. Btw, Hears is still touring. Just saw them last Sunday. They still got it. Go see them while you can!
Quote: "Heart is still touring. Just saw them last Sunday. They still got it. Go see them while you can!"
Heart, the original band, is not still touring. Ann & Nancy are still touring and using the name "Heart." Since the mid-80s, "Heart" has been Ann & Nancy accompanied by an ever-changing cast of backup musicians.
I'm not criticizing them or their music -- I'm just pointing out the fact that only 2 members of the original band are still together.
This is such a great comment. A big misconception of Heart is that they are simply a hard rock band but they are so much more. Folksy ballads + Rock. Such a great combination. Reminds me a lot of Fleetwood Mac.
you know nancy could of spead her own wings and made it on her own but to her credit she hung around and we all love her for that oh yeah next to the drummer she was the most talented in the band for real!!!
This is prolly my favourite all-time Heart song. If I could only listen to one Heart song for the rest of my life and HAD to pick just one, it would be this. Because it's just so Ann and Nancy. And they are the heart of Heart.
I was at this show! They had more than just Dreamboat Annie to play for us. I've always loved this tune.
Where do I get this concert? The Capital Center had a camera on EVERY band at EVERY concert I attended to show on the Jumbotron screen. Someone has a wealth of stuff tucked away somewhere because it is all of this quality.
I saw them on this same tour "The Dog & Butterfly Tour" at the hollywood Sportatorium. There was a big riff about who should open & Who should headline between them & Firefall, and Firefall was choosen to to open & Heart Blew them away, musically & one of their best lps..i sure miss this band as they were. Roger Fischer was such an under-rated guitarist espec at this time &
Howard Leese a great all- around musician, so versatile. kinda reminded me of led zep's/JPJ
Yep. But Steve Fossen was a better bassist IMHO. Why the sisters fired him and replaced him with Andes in '82 is a mystery to me. They'd already lost lead guitarist Roger Fisher a couple years earlier, and when Fossen and original drummer Michael Derosier departed in '82, the chemistry was never equaled again. That original lineup, shown in this video, was Heart at its peak.
I really like Ann & Nancy's two-part harmonies here. I didn't know this footage existed. Thanks for posting. :-)
I was at the Houston concert at the Summit. I remember that they were rocking the house down with Barracuda and Crazy on You. This was the 70's and the air was thick with smoke and it wasn't tobacco. :-)
In the middle of the show, they turn on all the lights in the theater and got out the acostic guitars and started playing this song. It was surreal, but worked really well.
They are so diverse! One of my all time favs Not to date myself but they used to play this on the radio alot to all the youngsters out there if you have never heard even old music it can be new to you, and some of the very best music came from the 60's and 70's! Not to mention they paved the way for women rockers!
You know I really do listen to new music all the time always trying to give a new artist a chance to impress me....but I always come running back to Ann!!! No one will ever come close to you Ann!!!!

Beautiful song and lyrics. One of my all time favourites. Can't get enough of Ann's voice .... during more than 3 decades by now. Amazingly talented vocalist.
