To people who thinks he is "stupid", "*insert negative word*" for doing this without ropes, he does it because he LOVES it and can do it! There was just a great 60 Minutes on him(that's why I searched Youtube vids on him), and before this he was always using ropes, until he felt he wanted to take the next step. He knows there are risks, and also knows that he will do free soloing until he no longer loves to do it. For very hard climbs, he does the course on rope for 2 or 3 days pre solo attempt.

I agree, this is a reasonable calculated risk 'for him'. He has done some 5.15 so this is what? 10 or 11 grades below his max...hats off the guy is both a physical and thinking machine. He is flat out amazing, and deserves even more recognition, except he doesn't even seem to want any fame (maybe he just needs the money)! He really is gifted, and has found how to COMPLETELY unlock his talent (in my eyes). Right now I'm just a 'pretty' lazy 17 year old, compared to this guy, but I've been a competitive swimmer and waterpolo player much of my life, and love staying in prime shape, going for school records.But Alex makes my palms sweat, and he makes me want to start a new path

I agree this guy may be the greatest climber alive. Unfortunately he is also a man with a self-destructive habit that will kill him if he continues. Now, lots of people have deadly, self-destructive habits and i think for the most part they should be free to do what the want. What disturbs me is that the photographer and Nat. @1rippster You sound like someone who doesn't climb. Many people free solo. Go up into the Flatirons in Boulder on just about any nice summer day and you'll find people free soloing. If you know the route and your climbing abilities, and you are mentally tough you can free solo safely. I actually think leading trad can be more dangerous than free soloing, as people tend to overly trust and rely on their gear placements.
