When this movie was made there was no concept of "sparks". It was all mechanicle machines with "Laser Cores" and other high tech stuff that evolved to give them sentient thought. They were created by the Quintessons as robot slaves. Much like the way we use at assembly plants in the world today.

So it makes more sense when you just think of them as robots and not beings with souls or "sparks".

For us to think of them ONLY in those terms is the derisive form of "typecasting." You wouldn't think Nimoy could play a good villain, but he did so in his early TV career by his own admission.
