You're right. It's way faster when you use a lid, especially if the cooker is weak and there's any kind of breeze. The lid keeps the hot vapor inside the pot, so thermal losses are much lower. You could probably test it yourself using a thermometer..
a side-by-side comparison of same style pot and same amount of water from room temperature to boiling but one with lid and one without the lid. Some people insist it makes no difference whether a pot is lidded or not lidded when boiling water. I insist that boiling water is faster when lidded.
