  • great voice great lyrics. Oh those times. Sooooooooooooooooo many memories.

  • this one always makes me cry

  • Such a stunning, emotional singer, saw every show when he appeared in South Australia, loved his voice since I was 13 years old and to this day miss his concerts. Such a fabulous voice and he was so nice to his fans. Miss you Gene.

  • this WAS Pitney's greatest song, forgot about the famous ones, listen to the beautiful chord progresssion and full tone key change

  • This guy makes x factor a shambles. He made it by making blindingly great recordsand apppealing directly to the emotions with the best soul voice ever.Simple but devastatingly effective

  • wat a singer & so talented in every way. gene didn't make 1 bad record.

  • all genes songs were firstclass ballads and and they all meant something to alot of people brilliant and a sad loss to music

  • It's my favorite GP song too! I just melted when he sang it in concert.

  • My favorite Gene Pitney song. Just one smile to make my life worth living is so true. Thanks for posting this.

  • @newhotman1001 my fav too!!

  • This is an exquisite presentation of the song & Gene Pitney's career, best revealed by his album & single covers. Many thanks.

  • Easily his best record, written by the very talented Randy Newman.Pax to all from to 73soulboy.Xxx.

  • a really great song

it means so much to me

  • I'd love to see the live version with Gene singing! That would make my day.

  • Great song! Thanks for posting it.

  • am 71 years old..and how embarrassing cry when I hear this..of a love that I lost..and maybe I am not the only one that this song does that to..a wonderful wonderful singer..and terrific song writers.

  • @Beejayeecee I'm 60 and it makes me cry too for a lost love.

  • I wonder if Gene's 3 sons are as handsome as he was??

  • @sweetnpeachy1 He was going to do a Christmas cd with his one son singing with him, but he died before it was completed. I always wondered if one of his kids got his voice. His son Todd ran his recording studio don't know if he sang or not. I think it was his son David that was going to sing with him. Maybe after his death it took the sails out of it for his son. I'm sure they are all nice looking guys, Gene was very handsome. He is so missed.

  • @Tonithenightowl Todd has a website....I think he records and produces others' music.

Gene holds a special place in my heart...seeing him several times as a young teen was a highlight of my young life. He's SO missed! He was UBER handsome as a young man!

  • @sweetnpeachy1 Oh crap another one that saw Gene Pitney in his prime lol. That has always been a big regret for me that I never did. He was very handsome when young and still handsome to the end. There was just something about him. A quality most singer simply don't have. He pulled you into his song and could reduce you to tears. That my friend is the mark of true talent. He gave his all. Thanks for responding.

  • @Tonithenightowl I saw his three sons at his funeral and, yes, they are all very handsome. Gene is sorely missed.

  • @txtootsie I still can't believe he's gone. Did you know Gene personally? He seemed like a jewel of a guy. I was so hoping one of those boys got his voice, it would be a legacy, being that Gene said he got his voice from his dad. Can you imagine being able to hear Gene's songs sung by one of his sons? I would be first in line to buy a ticket. His music, his incredible voice will never be gone. My heart goes out to his family if we miss him, can you imagine how they feel?

  • @Tonithenightowl I knew him as a fan and he knew me and let me come backstage when I attended his concerts. Don't know about his sons just that Todd worked with him on producing music.

  • @txtootsie Yes, I knew Todd ran his recording studio. He must be interested in sound and electronics as Gene was. Gene was so generous to his fans, apparently he never let his fame go to his head. Even with being an international star, he was still a down home boy at heart. That says a lot. I'm always glad to meet someone who met him, I'm still envious though lol. He is and will always be my favorite singer of all time. Thanks so much for responding.

  • I grew up on his music as my dad loved the guy and i have to say i do own his greatest hits cd and do listen to it when im in a sombre mood it was a great loss when he died xxx

  • Gene Pitney one of the best voices ever with this outstanding song.

  • ..absolutely love this song..great words..how I wish I could say..how mny times have I thought this in later life..

  • love this song... great singer. one of the best of all time !!!!!

  • This is Gene's biographical song. Marc Almond came late to Gene. Lots of spiritually alone. Glad you finally found peace, Gene. RIP

  • @MingnonDunn ..Can you explain what you mean?

  • @prettywomanx Please read between the lines. Then you'll understand.

  • @MingnonDunn ..For your information, Gene was a very happy man, happily married with two fine sons. I met him a few times and he had been a favourite of mine since 1962 and still is.

  • @prettywomanx Amen.

  • @MingnonDunn ..A very nice man and devoted to his wife and 3 sons and to his faith. I saw him many times, met him once and he was a prince of a guy.

Kissed my hand and gave me a rose at a concert when I was around 14 or 15 yrs old.

He stayed busy writing, recording and touring til the night he died. He was a sound engineer and had a recording studio in his home.

This is a beautiful soulful song, a great rendition by a very talented man!

  • I like this song!!

  • im only 24 and this song is one of my all tym favorites

  • All of Gene Pitneys songs were faviortes of mine---but I have to say I listen to this one a lot more than some of the others---when I was a teen and even today at 62.

  • @davidbottles Thank heavens I'm not the only one out there that think this man was one of the greatest singers out there (he could carry a tune, amen!)

  • @avengedlove87

How right you are...you wouldn't believe how this song helped me through the most traumatic time of my life. Still as beautiful. What a sad loss to music

  • Tina

     (((((((((((Hugs))))))))))))

  • r.i.p gene great music great man "

  • Watching this on the second anniversary of my partners passing She was a huge fan and we were fortunate to see him live several times. I played Just One Smile at her service

I miss her so much every day but seeing things like this help me remember the good times thankyou so much x

    Tina x

  • It is a really lovely song and glad that it has it seems brought you some peace for a short while and I hope you eventually find another special person, if that is your wish

  • raydubo is correct. This is a Randy Newman song. (Newman = "I Love LA" and of course, "Short People -- got no reason to live!" as well as the them to the Monk TV show!)

This haunting melody has some strange chord progressions and key changes. Very hard to play until you learn the pattern.

And Gene does it so well! We begged him to include it in his concert tours, and about 1998, he finally did.

Its a short tune. But when done with full orchestra, its quite impressive!

  • Tough song to sing. Remarkable job by Pitney.

  • Randy Newman tune. Blood Sweat tears did it too.

  • My favourite, brings me always to tears.

    Unforgetable, the best!!

    RIP Gene

A big big Belgian Gene fan

  • I never had the chance to see him in the 60's but a couple of years before he died I saw him in London. my husband booked the tickets as a surprise. In a way I was frightened that my memories of him would be ruined by an old man who could not sing but the performance was perfect. He had a band with him and when he hit the high noties I think someone may have been assisting but the whole performance was fantastic. Sor sorry when he died.

  • I love Gene Pitney's version of this song. For an equally beautiful cover, check out Dusty Springfield's "Just One Smile" from her landmark Atlantic album, "Dusty In Memphis." You're going to love Dusty's rendition, too.

  • I may be wrong, but I think this song was written by then-unknown Randy Newman. A marvelous song, and a marvelous singer.

  • I Love This song So Much ....

Thanks and greetings from Belgium !

  • I love this song too, they don't make them like they used too. Greetings to you too from the UK :)

  • @sipenholz ..HI BELGIUM FROM THE US!! RIP GENE xoxo

  • wow...i have all his song s i sung to them all whilst i was growing up as my dad loved them. My mother would do a runner for another chap and leave us waiting for her to return. This song brings back the times id sit in his arms when i was very young bwondering why she hated us so much... you know what they say huh...a girl can only trst one man throughout her life and its her dad. Crap times but lovely song... Plenty of smiles still widen my face with thoughts of my dad...

  • Your thoughts and honesty made me smile, glad you can still smile also:)

  • @littlemissknuckles It's a bitter sweet memory for me as well. I listened to all Gene's music growing up and saw him perform several times. This song makes me think what a wonderful man he was and how he brought so much happiness to so many...the memories of all those long lost days of youth can sometimes be overwhelming. I totally understand what you're saying..my Dad was a special man and a great father...one whom I could always trust. I miss him terribly...xx

  • @littlemissknuckles What a sad memory..... I sure hope your dad went on to find some happiness...

  • Gene pitney fucking ownz u gotta admit...

  • Just lost my wife at Christmas.

This came on the radio the other night and the lyrics fit how I feel like a glove, The only thing I would change is "Pretend that you love me again" to "Pretend that your living again" i Not to proud to say it brought tears to my eyes. We saw Gene together in a few times in the late 60's and 70's Missing them both. I hope she has met him now!

  • I'm sure she and Gene are already singing duets and sending you love and positive thoughts, knowing how hard it is to be left behind.

Just one smile and the pains forgiven and you have lots of smiles to give..:)

    Bless you my friend

  • Many Thanks. Taking time to post your support means a great deal to me and your right, there is a lot of great memories to smile about.

    Cheers

  • Great memories for us all, individually and collectively but you keep the special ones that provide just that one smile.........your strength makes me feel ashamed of my own weakness.....keep smiling my friend:)

  • u just made me cry....lots of love to u,,,,,hope u r ok...

  • Thanks for the kind thought. I really appreciate it. I am getting there, one day at a time. Still listening to Gene and thinking of her!

  • RIP Gene. One of his best songs. I miss him. Thanks for posting.

    A Belgian big big fan.

    Annie

  • My mom's favourite, always got played when mom and dad had argued and dad had pissed off to the pub.. still brings a tear but can't help listening..

  • i love gene. this makes me cry everytime

  • An absolute masterpiece. This man could do no wrong.

  • Foundation of our faith is what saves us.

  • this got a lot higher in the british charts in 1966, 8 in fact!

  • Love this song. Miss you Gene.

  • A classic from my man!!! wonderful!!

    Thank you for posting!!

  • A Classic , they dont know how to put feeling in songs anymore.. pure class this one..

  • Gene wasn't doing this song in his concerts until several of us on the old AOL GP Forum begged him to put it in the show.

That was approximately 1996 or 1997.

He'd been doing it ever since until his final show.

Until he died, he could STILL squeeze all the feelings, the emotion, and the tension out of this song with his dynamic voice! Every nuance and his almost imperceptible little 'growl' in his voice were trademarks of Gene's amazing ability to deliver a song.

    This is my FAVORITE.

  • Fantastic talent.

  • we cared gene. now you,v been taken from us but your music will live for ever!!!!!!!!! the best.

  • Still love you Gene. The very best.

  • I had the honor of going to his house when I was very young.. I met his mother and became fast friends. Then I had the horror of going to his wake. I am from CT. and lived not far from him. I have always loved him and will until I die.... Barbara

  • How i enjoyed your story Barbara, thank's for sharing....i am just a fan down in Boca Raton, Florida, i just love his music and i play his songs everyday, i really do ! you must be filled with wonderful memories of knowing him and his family,he seemed like a noble man, my two favorite songs are SOMETHING'S GOTTEN HOLD OF MY HEART...& I'M GONNA BE STRONG, BUT I LOVE THEM ALL ! wish we lived closer as i would love to hear all about your life long friendship with him and anything else you can share

  • yeh he was mi uncle i miss him so much...i always cry when i hear this song. its still werid on christmas he had his own chair at my house, and now no one sits in it.we miss him<3

    ily uncle gene<3

  • We miss him, too.

He's the only singer who could make a gravelly hoarse soundig voice sounds absolutely right. I think my favorite will always be his first to chart in the USA.

"I Wanna Love My Life Away". 1961.

I wish it was posted here...I wore the 45 out....a long time ago.

  • pitneys best by a country mile, SUPERB

  • What a voice, nothing can compare to this!

  • Thank you...

  • never really appreciated this until we saw Gene in concert in CT....what a loss...we will never forget that night and the memories....rip Gene! J&B

  • I still have the promo copy of the Musicor single of JUST ONE SMILE, which I first played on the air over 41 years ago, and as recently as 2001. I can almost see Pappy Daily and Gene in the studio, working on this and his many dozen other great records. Yes, this is his best performance, bar none. Miss Dusty covered this song a couple years later, and I believe it is one of the early writing efforts of Randy Newman. Does anyone have THE PLAYGROUND by Barbara Cooper on RCA?

  • This music is before my time, but my father had records of Gene Pitney. When i was on the age of 12, i already played this musis. I didn´t let my friends know, because they would never understand it. They loved WHAM and that sort of bands, and i was into Gene Pitney, Ricky Nelson, The Bee Gees and that sort of music :) AND I STILL LOVE IT!!!

  • Pitneys best song ever!!!! This song is sooooooooooooo good!!!

  • this is the sound track to my life i play this song over and over again cos it reminds my of my son who died when he was 1 day old

  • I understand....

  • Gene Pitney has always been a great part of my life.. when he sings he sings from the heart...this is a great song by a unique singer...we will miss you Gene...

  • Like most of you, I'm a Pitney fan for all my life (well, since 1961). When we had the AOL Pitney forum in the mid-1990's, I began to learn of songs I'd never heard. Found this one on a bootleg CD in Hong Kong and talked it up on the forum. We fans apparently convinced him to add it to his live concerts, and he did an outstanding job with it every time I saw him live until he died.

This is one of his best 'emotion wrencher' songs, and Gene excelled at that!

  • this song is like the sound track to my life thanks for shering it lol xx

  • Gene wasnt one of my favourite artists but i must admit that this number is top draw, i never tire of listening to it in a word "class"

  • couldn;t believe this song was on here. my mum passed away suddenly in december and she wanted this played at her funeral. everyone there was in tears. with the idol now. sleep well mum x x x

  • this one's for you ignace

    barre

  • I really love this song!!!

  • I am in love...

  • you are irreplaceable gene, noone comes close to you,i wish icould see your smile just once more

  • ist line i think is today i cried, a little bit

  • When I was a college student in the early 70s we thought we were cool for discovering Randy Newman, with no clue (not I, anyway) that Gene Pitney had beaten us to it a decade earlier. Newman must have been thrilled with this magnificent rendition of his song.

  • this brings me to tears

  • brent441, thank you for sharing this great song from gene pitney. not one of his biggest hits, just one of his greatest songs.

  • tanx.......Just One Smile

  • This was one of Gene's very best songs...full of emotion...full of anguish in the voice for a love lost. I listened to this song many times years ago when I to lost a love of my life.....when he sings "how I wish I could say, all the things I want to say..wow....goes right to the soul.......thanks Gene

  • For not getting higher than #67 on the charts, it got a fair amount of air play. Another great song by Gene Pitney. Thanks for the memories!

  • This is one of a few Randy Newman songs that Gene Pitney recorded. Another interesting one is "Nobody Needs Your Love More Than I Do" (which was just an album cut).

  • Back again. This is absolutely beautiful. What a talent!

  • Cool. Blood, Sweat & Tears did a great cover of this song on their first album. Just one smile, pain's forgiven...

  • another record i have got but haven't played for ages. it moved me to tears to hear it again.

  • I too used to be a 'mossleymaid'. Did you ever go to Ashton Palais in the 60's?

  • You bet I did. I even went when it became The Birdcage too. Where abouts in Mossley did you live?

  • Yes, now I do remember that it became the Birdcage. I lived in Micklehurst, the Sycamores. I lived there until I was 21 when I moved to London and have been here ever since. Did have a nostalgic weekend in Manchester a few weeks ago and drove through Mossley. It brought back many memories of course. I have no family living there any more. Where did you live?

  • i live on Cemetery Road off Stayley Road. I used to go to Ashton Grammar School and I used to deliver papers on Micklehurst. Maybe i know you?

  • mossleymaid, my first name is Joan but I do not want to put my maiden name on this website. I went to Heginbottom School in Ashton and I am 60 this year. I cannot remember that I knew anyone who lived on Cemetry Rd then but I had a friend Sandra who lived on one of the first houses on the right but that was in the 70's. Are you still in Mossley?

  • yes still here. my mum went to heginbottom modern but she is 74 so well before your time. I am on facebook too and I have posted some pictures of Mossley on it. I love Mossley. i can understand you not wanting to put your name on here you can't be too careful. Take care xxx

  • If your mum is 74 you must be quite a lot younger than me so I doubt if we do know each other. Cheerio.

    j.

  • i'm 55 and went to all saints church i was on the choir. i used to work in john robbies paper shop on saturdays. my first name is Ricky short for Rishenda. Nice chatting anyway. take care x

  • I was just playing this song this morning. I have the British pressing of this on 'Stateside Records' (no. SS 558). In England it reached No.8 and charted for 12 weeks. My Mum loved Gene and played a lot of his music. Mum died recently and a couple of his songs were played at her funeral (not this one though although it was considered).

  • I think this is actually his best song ever, great orchestrations and chords. Made the Uk top 10

  • love this song ,you cannot get no body to sing this song how gene sings it .and yes it does sound like he had a tear in his voice, thanks brent441 keep um commimg

  • Gene Pitney is one of my fav and, like others, I had never heard this song before. A jewel in the rough for sure.

    Thank you Brent441

  • He had a tear in his voice in this song.

No one could sing ballads like Gene Pitney.

  • the best! thanks

  • Mmmmm I know this would have been a great hit in '64

  • Brent,Thanks for posting.Beautiful song.Too bad it only reached #64 on the charts.Wonder if it would've charted better in 1964/65 when he was making hit after hit.Never heard this song until now.Thank you again.Love all his songs!!!

  • Absolutely one of the best singers of all time. Thanks for this tribute to one of the greats.

  • Never heard this song before. This man is one of my favorites. Thank you.
