  • This guys such a talented director, cant wait to see more from him , district 9 was utterly brilliant & original , Very keen to get a look at the film called "ELYSIUM" that he's making due for release in 2013

  • original aliens so much better

  • Isn't this the actor from District 9, just with out a moustache?

  • Fridge Logic: if they have enough energy to power their spaceships anti-gravity technology and stay afloat, why do they steal electric power from Jo'burg?

Fridge Brilliance: All of their energy is used to make the ships stay afloat, they can't spare anymore so they went to steal it from the Humans.

  • @TheVoiceOfReason93 perhaps the antigrav tech doesn't take that much energy. it could take an enormous energy to activate, but once activated, it didn't take any energy. like a mass effect.

  • the aliens are like from district 9

  • im a prawn and i find this offensive

  • Wikus when he was a sniper before getting his desk job in MNU

  • wow 4 people were aliens :B

  • hey its wikus

  • @davorl You're an idiot. How about you die? Thanks

  • @Sone1ne Sorry, no. I'd rather continue to politely express my opinions, which is something you apparently are not able to do.

  • @davorl district 9 was not tasteless...but people have their opinions and i respect that

  • Wow! That was incredible. Thank you!

  • Holy mother of Ra, it's Wickus at 3:18 ! SWEEEEEEET

  • Hah, i saw Wickus Van de Merve! :D It seems a bit to much fantasy for me that they can lift veichles up like that x)

  • @ExoBlirin «Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic» :)

  • @B166ERG whats that from? i heard that not too long ago and cant remember where its from...ancient aliens maybe ?

  • @icanseemychin its from Arthur C. Clarke actually

  • I've had ut with these fooking prawns!

  • I remember watching this in 2006 and wanting more

  • ZOMG THIS R TEH RIP OFF OF DISTRICKT 9 ;)

  • @BluntIce wow you are stupid, this was the original film that was turned into a movie

  • @gaji1 wow your a dumbass for not getting the joke

  • @BluntIce Leave the comedy to the professional kid and go play with your pokemon cards....Nice nerd pic hhahaha

  • Neil Blomkamp should direct Half Life movie! And damn it would become the best video-game adaptation.

  • @markrulz30 Agreed! However Half life would be better as a TV series, considering how much goes on. In a movie they're bound to miss something or screw something up because of time restrictions and not being able to fit all details, if it were a show they could start at Black mesa and through episodes get to the end of half life 2 episode 2. Plus they would have more time to fit every detail in as well, making the quality better overall.

  • sad thing, wikipedia states that the interviews that don´t especifically said "aliens" are the points of view for real zimbawe refugees

  • is a beautiful film.

  • Copley improvised ALL the dialogue in District 9. Incredible!!

  • Lols why are people replying I'm saying read the book

  • i wish neil blomkamp was still doing the halo movie :(

  • Haha they remind me of Sand People from Star Wars...

Except with tentacles. District 9 was really great though ^^

  • Prototype for District 9.

  • Its howling mad murdock! Hahaha

  • Is this a special feature on the district 9 dvd?

  • Lol, Halo is gonna be the best, Halo bad? They tried making a call of duty move hahahahha! XD Halo and District 9 is quite similar but, its more religus (typo), the aliens want to kill life in the universe so the flood (or for you halo haters zombies) won't have food, human try to stop them and find another way. Human wins, look I bet half of you haven't even read the halo book, read it and you will love halo

  • @MrBoxen Don't assume.

  • @MrBoxen HALO SUCKKSSSS

  • Shalto Copley is the sniper, guys. Copley played Wikus.

  • Is that Shalto Copley (who plays Wikus) at 3:20?

  • @gravygwundud I think so.

  • @gravygwundud yeah is copley at 3:20!

  • That's why I said LIKE

  • Very cool. I liked how the visual effects are extremely well done and the movie was incredible.

  • It's like an extended trailer.

  • @Egdbankai13 Except it's not.

  • I don't think District 9 did good because of the production team (even though they did a GREAT job at it!), but because of the originality

  • im glad that halo the movie fell apart because district 9 was great

  • is the uncle wikus jajajaja

  • Wikus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great actor

  • Great to see this short movie posted. Maybe the director himself could post a hidef version. And District 9 is probably one of the best scifi movies ever!

I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel if they could keep the same production team (and values) and overall style. There's just a ton of stories waiting to be told in the movie's universe..

  • It`s exactly the situation in the camps of EU (Greec/ Malta/Italia) were they keep the boatpeople from africa!

  • Wow the poor aliens

Stupid PETA quit bitching about the manatees and go help these guys in Johannesburg!

  • this is a fooking good film

  • oh these aliens look so gross. district 9 prawns are so much cooler looking.

  • @Raso8k You're missing the point I think, the entire premise of the film is to show how segregation can be translated in our modern world. Skin color is just a detail amongst others, but being different just isn't easy. Don't get me wrong, I love District 9 and its SFX, but I ound the most interesting point it raises is the discrimination which rallies both whites and blacks together against a new species, simply different in appearance and culture.

  • @Raso8k dont forget,this is a low budget production

  • thank god the Halo project fell through and they made District 9 instead.. Halo is just bad and why would anyone want to make a movie of it

  • A nice film thats been expanded into a wonderful masterpiece!

  • Alive in Joburg was made in 2005 just as a short Film. That is indeed Sharlto Copley who plays Wikus in D9. The video that people said was 'The Start of the Halo Movie' is also a short film called Landfall made by Neil for Bungie . Then when he was going to direct the actual Halo film it was slated but since they still had money they looked back at this and decided to make District 9, using certain factors of this. So D9 is a feature length spin off in a way...

Thumbs Up So People can See :)

  • I believe I saw Dr. Zoidberg at 1:45!

  • wow that suit looks so DUMB! and why is pretty much everything in the gun scene cgi?

  • Wikuuuuusss!!!

  • wow these guys look scarier than those fucking prawns man!

  • it could me wikus just when he was younger. when he was starting and working his way up the chain.

  • This is so much more captivating than District 9. Not that D9 wasn't a good movie; this is just better.

  • SHARLTO!!!!!!1

  • Loved "District 9". A great movie, not your typical SciFi.

  • Hehe so this is what District 9 was loosely based on....XD very cool!

  • lol wikus is in this.

  • @crim407 thats because District 9 was based on this.

  • District 9 is one of the best movies I've ever seen.

  • @hammy012 sAY that again, district 9 IS the best movie u have ever seen

  • Chainsy, I think your comment is spot on.

  • Wow .. This is kinda cool to see ... The original District 9 had the same actor in it as the white guy ... Bad ass

  • Origine Distric9 !!!!!!!!! Very good movie !!!

  • Really interesting to see the progression from this to District 9. Always nice to see a bit of Sharlto Copley too. lol

  • Just saw District 9, brilliant movie. I hope Blomkamp makes more films like this in the future, one of the really promising directors in our time!

  • at 2:55 is that the big black guy that calls wikus "boss"? I hope so, he should have a spin off movie, no, TELEVISION SERIES!

  • it's wikus.lol. awsome short film. saw district 9 recently kick ass movie. wanna see it again

  • Sharlto Copley produced Alive in Joburg and starred District 9 as Wikus.

I agree with you, District 9 is a great movie. It's so interesting to see how corrupt humans can be, whether dealing with other humans or aliens. A very intelligent movie, it discusses xenophobia, racism, and the apartheid.

  • great stuff !!

  • Shartlo Copely!!!! 3:18

  • It's really sad how a person can watch a movie like District 9 and get out of the theater with a poor comment like this.

Do some research on the apartheid, xenophobia, racism and try to relate those themes to District 9.

Then you remember that that is a sci-fi movie. And the creators had the brilliant idea of exploiting those themes in a movie that shows human-alien interaction.

District 9 is a very intelligent movie, yet, extremely entertaining.

  • No need to go all mighty on me; you obviously didnt get what I'm trying to say.

I'm fully aware of the underlying themes - apartheid, racial conflicts - thats pretty much the reason why I *like* Joburg.

It is just that D9 didnt ADD anything to it. They took the (very good) premise of Joburg, altered it a bit, then added some seriously plot-holed paint-by-numbers hollywood action BS and named it D9.

D9 is not a bad movie - it just didnt live up to what "Joburg" had offered. Wasted potential.

  • Well, I can't argue about your likes and dislikes.

But I do not personally think D9 went to the wrong direction.

Besides that, in Joburg, you cannot actually grasp the whole idea of social alienation, segregation, racism (specicism) as you can in D9. It was not 60 minutes added for nothing, after all. Those themes were better developed in D9 throughout the movie.

  • Indeed, they were better developed. But they account for only the first third of the movie.

You can pretty much pin it down to the scene were the "alien device" (which is the major deviance from Joburg setting, and also its major plot hole) is found. Before that, it was all awesome, perfect social commentary. After that, it drifts into a really flawed, mindless action/ interracial buddy movie/ Jacksonesque splatter flick.

I really wanted to love D9, but because of that, I couldnt.

  • @Chainsy Are you suggesting that you would of prefered that the whole 2 hours of District 9 be in News report/ hand held camera/ security camera form, with no actual plot or drama, just the aliens behaving badly and the African people wanting them to leave?

Everyone Iv'e met loves district 9, apart from you

  • Glad to broaden your horizon then.

And no, I would not prefer a 2 hours of shaky camera ("Cloverfield" made me feel nauseous). I'm no CGI-carnage-hater either. All I'm asking for is that its wrapped in a *plausible plot*!

Hell, I could come up with about a dozen more credible stories by means of my limited, half-arsed fan fiction skills.

  • @Chainsy asking for a sci-fi movie to have a plausible plot? that's like asking for chocolate cake and beer not to make you fat. the point of sci-fi is to explore the implausible, and district 9 is one of the best sci-fi movies i've ever seen.

  • So you did'nt realise the charakter development of Wikus?! Thats weird because it's kinda obvious...

Besides, District 9 is about moving the prawns into District 10, which is a great difference to Joburg, that just pictures the current situation

  • My god, am I actually seeing a calm and intelligent debate here on YouTube or have I died?

  • @Xylokaine Neither, we're trapped in an alternate reality where everything here just would not make sense at all in our dimension.

  • @FatLewy27 I got my hopes up too...

  • Welcome to.. the twilight zone!

I could add some "OMFG LOL this is, like, totally teh pwnage!!1!" if it makes you feel more at home ;)

  • Some of the footage is from actual crime and protests, hollywood would never be able to surpass the violence of South Africa.

  • was that wikus??

  • It was him, it has him under IMDB as "Sniper"

  • i actually think so! i saw tgis before district 9 and now that i saw d9 it does look like him just shaven

  • ya bra i reckon thats wikus at 3:18 to 3:44, what a boetjie

  • @TheSpriteGuy it was certainly the actor who plays him.

    Roll on District 10.

  • @TheSpriteGuy it was definitly his actor--dunno bout his character.

  • @TheSpriteGuy district 9 was based on this not a sequel so no it wasnt also DISTRICT 9 WAS AMAZING district 10 nao

  • @TheSpriteGuy

    yes =D

  • @TheSpriteGuy Yep, awesome right?

  • @TheSpriteGuy Yes it was...

  • District 9

    Director: Neill Blomkamp

    Producer: Peter Jackson

  • THANKS MAN I DIDN'T KNOW THIS

  • I wonder if Sharlto Copley in this short knew that this short film will make him a star someday.

  • Very original and unique concept. I'll go see District 9 just for the creative property this movie brings to a genre that hasn't see much quality in a while. I hope it is a good film, it has a lot of potential.

I don't believe in Aliens but come one now people be a little open minded. There are possible occurences for this to happen within reason. When movies go off the deep end, yea they lose their credibility. It's not making an outrageous claim however, unlike an Eddie Murphy movie.

  • with an infinite expanse of space how could you be convinced that there is nothing alive except on this relative pebble? you are indeed entitled to your opinions it just baffles me.

  • I think there are definitely aliens out there, but it is almost impossible for us to meet them because the possibility is so small, we'd have to wait till the end of the world (literally) for a visit...

  • people need to realize that District 9 is based on this short film... fking noobs

  • why? i think bonkamp wrote both, and let peter jackson (genius) direct it.

  • I think it was when the Halo movie was scratched that they tried to find a replacement story for bonkamp, and they saw this short film and thought that this would be a good idea for a movie. So Peter Jackson came on board to direct for the movie. Or was he with the project all the way?

    Can't remember.

Oh well, good movie, great film.

  • i'm afraid i really don't know. i had heard there was a new peter jackson alien movie coming out a couple weeks ago but i didnt even see the preview until yesterday (no cable or internet at my house)

  • Peter Jackson produced it, Blomkamp directed District 9 as well.

  • nice :D

  • Love the south african accent that the officer in the chopper has.

  • is this the whole film?

  • i dont know, i would realy like to know...and if its not were i can watch the whole thing

  • the aliens kinda look like the younger brothers of the alines in Predator

  • all intelligent beings, both human and non-human, have basic rights to liberty and decency. It is our goal to see the Multi-National United Corporation be held accountable for its despicable acts of violence against non-humans(as you saw), and see non-humans gain equal rights in the minds of the public and the law.

  • uhh, what if they don't have unlimited resources.. what's to say their ships have unlimited fuel? or if they even know if they will make it to the next habitable planet before their own on ship resources run out.. I know this is fictional but don't be dumb..

  • What about these aliens? :)

They got stuck on earth, and they just wanted to go home, but they couldn't.

Try not to contradict yourself here :P

  • 2:37

  • What about it? There's nothing there.

  • I, for one, am looking forward to District 9.

  • District 9 looks like its going to be amazing!

Yeah. The Trailer actually made me freez in my tracks. Cant believe they set it in Joburg. Guess Neill Blomkamp is keeping it real! And local!

Big it up for remembering your roots Neill. And I for one will be buying the box set on Blueray.
