  • i miss this Ben Gibbard

  • @paulkb2 everyone is just being to nice to say it but, you're a god damn idiot. ben gibbard wrote this song with jimmy tamborello 6 years before iron and wine covered it. get your facts straight

  • He is covering Iron and Wine's song, such great heights. The electronic version of this was a cover as well.

  • @paulkb2 You sir are incorrect, Iron & Wine did the cover. Ben wrote this song.

  • @paulkb2 at no part of your incoherent response did you answer correctly, I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul

  • @paulkb2 No, he, Ben Gibbard wrote this song, the original version is "The Postal Service", learn your facts or gtfo.

  • @paulkb2 You sir, are a big troll.

  • Nice, but when it comes to acoustic covers of this song, Iron & Wine actually has Gibbard beat at his own game.

  • I didn't know Zach Galifianakis could sing...

  • @somanator12 Dude this seriously made me LOL.

  • That hairy beast is the most talented man alive

  • Is that a match?

  • Did he have a beard?

  • Can't a guy (like me) like both The Postal Service and Owl City? I mean come on, instead of hating on one, why not like both?

  • @HongKoon93 and how can he compare miley cyrus to owl city...

  • @HongKoon93 I don't hate on you for liking them, I just have my own reasons not to like both based on the people who are making the music and my perception of their talent. Taste is relative tho

  • To clear up everyone's confusion. Ben Gibbard (i.e. Postal Service) wrote and recorded this song back in 2002. Iron & Wine released an EP cover of this song shorty thereafter for the movie Garden State. This EP can actually be found on the "Such Great Heights" single released by the Postal Service in 2003.

To add to the confusion. This video is actually a cover, of a cover so to speak. Ben is covering Iron & Wine's version of his own song because he's said in the past how much he likes it.

  • Why are you arguing about iron and wine? This isn't a cover at all, the iron and wine cover of bens song sounds way different. Sam covered it for the garden state sound track

  • If you listen to NPR All Songs Considered concert, before Ben plays this song he says, that this is a Sam Beam song.

  • @MrJkwilliamson um... no? ben gibbard wrote this song (a.k.a. The Postal Service/Death Cab For Cutie) learn shit before you start talking shit

  • @EpicCatTime Holy hostility, Batman! This person just said they heard Ben say that on All Things Considered...I don't hear any shit talking.

  • RIP Ryan Dunn...

  • Ben looks like Zach Galifinakis hahaha

  • The Iron and Wine Version is a cover.

  • The Iron and Wine Version is a cover.

  • You fools Ben Gibbard didn't write this it's an Iron and Wine cover...look it up

  • @kalixfornia lol YOU look it up YOU fool, this guy was in the band that originally wrote this song

  • WCU, Ben Gibbard was in the postal service and wrote this...

  • Can anyone give me the notes on this?

  • what guitar is he using

  • The Postal Service Cover? Would it be a cover if Paul McCartney played "Yesterday" live?

  • @thatonegirrrl

    Owl City is fantastic.

And I love Ben Gibbard to deeath.

  • Lol "Is that a match?"

    Ben. What a guy.

  • This isn't a cover... Ben Gibbard is one half of The Postal Service..

  • Owl City? more like foul and shitty.

  • @MegaCrasher3000 Ben Gibbard basically IS the Postal Service. So it's kind of hard to cover yourself.

  • @123321JAG

Yeah, I get that. That was why I thought it was kind of a funny irony that he's covering a cover of his own song.

  • So let me get this straight. This is Ben covering Iron & Wine's cover of the Postal Service? Cool!

  • he covered his face up with hair

  • SONG DISERVES 10 THUMBS UP, now i just need 4 people to agree with me to get those 8 other thumbs

  • Comment removed

  • @Mrkayjell

it was written and is originally by the postal service, iron and wine covered it

  • Ben Gibbard is my ginger jesus

  • IT'S NOT A COVER IS IT? DID'NT HE WRITE THAT SONG HIMSELF?????

  • @domonic92 It's a cover. Postal Service sung the original.

  • @MortisVeloxx But Ben Gibbard is the singer for Postal Service...

  • @MortisVeloxx but ben is the lead singer of postal service, so he actually wrote it.

  • @MortisVeloxx Postal Service is Ben Gibbard's band bro.

  • @MortisVeloxx REALLY ILL HAVE TO LOOK IT U

  • Damn! He looks like Zach Galifianakis! :P

  • @sinzirosan yay. another zach galifianakis comparison because someone has a beard.

  • Whoa. I had no idea he was this good live! BEN GIBBARD, I WILL STALK YOU NOW TILL I SEE YOU LIVE AT LEAST ONCE IN MY LIFE.

  • What kind of guitar is that?

  • This cover makes sense. When I first heard Postal Service on Pandora, I thought it was Deathcab.

  • @willliamwelterii That's because Ben Gibbard is the frontman of both. Haha.

  • @spazymonky are you serious???

  • If perfect music was a person, this would be him.

  • @Sorashan Indeed.

  • pure beauty.

  • @reinkaos82 That is how he draws them in

  • he shits all over that unlatented nob owl city (who by the way it came out didnt write that song)

  • Is that a match?

  • I was all ready to make a paedophile joke when I saw the beard, and then I started listening to the song and got hooked. :3

  • tight tight, and for all you below who say he's covering iron and wine, or himself? your ignorance makes me laugh

  • @meman24 he kind of is covering himself. he wrote the song in the postal service..

  • @meman24

    me too haha

  • smile :)

  • Shut the fuck up arguing about genre, musicality and influences. It's all music, it's all beautiful.

  • @TheOldSpirit A-F***ING-MEN.

  • He's covering himself !

  • BRING BACK THE BEARD

  • I love the fact that Ben Gibbard is doing a cover of Iron & Wine, and that Iron & Wine's cover was originally a cover of Ben Gibbard's song.

  • @DK3CHAMP Right? Great cover. I can't think of anything he does wrong.

  • Nice beard.

  • Even when he paused to say, "Is that a match?" I got goosebumps man.

  • I just LOVE the people on youtube who claim themselves "musical geniuses". Seriously, the ones who know every genre and every artist's influences. Just shut the fuck up and listen to the music. It sounds good so accept that. Forgot who wrote it, who took part in it...just enjoy it. Jesus...it's a good song. Leave it at that.

  • 15 thumbs down on this?

I have a feeling that those 15 are listening to Owl City and Miley Cyrus right now.

  • @thatonegirrrl You are an asshole. Ben Gibbard has been a great influence for Adam Young of Owl City. And Owl City is actually same genre with Postal Service.

  • @Loloxthehealer

    HAHAHAHA chill. Asshole.

  • Comment removed

  • @thatonegirrrl your awesome lol just way to awesome :)

  • @thatonegirrrl I'm pretty sure Owl City is actually what Postal Service would be if it was crapped out of Disney's ass

  • @thatonegirrrl

Adam Young (you probably didn't know Owl City's music is written, produced and recorded by ONE individual person) is a very talented artist who creates many types of music which are MUCH more original styles than what you probably listen to (rock etc).

I'm not saying Ben Gibbard/ The Postal Service are bad, they are GOOD, but PLEASE don't put down other musicians who you know nothing about.

  • @thatonegirrrl Actually Adam Young (the guy from Owl City) admits to be a huge Ben Gibbard fan, and his music writing is greatly influenced by Postal Service....I don't think Miley Cyrus and Owl City deserve to be even remotely compared. in any bracket whatsoever.

  • @thatonegirrrl awesome...

  • @thatonegirrrl whats wrong with Owl City? i know Owl City is all popular now and way too many views on youtube but whatever they got a good sound you know. jeesh

  • @thatonegirrrl Owl city is good. Miley sucks still.

  • @johnman1234 am I sensing some sarcasm, or am I sensing some sarcasm? Whatever. I've gotta say that my favorite voice in the indie rock genre is definietely mercer, then gibbard, then Elliott smith.

  • this is the only man that has the best voice on earth..

  • Nice vid, but the song isn't a postal service cover, as the postal service is gibbards band

  • @jimijimi1029 thats so true. i wouldve totally forgot.

  • Comment removed

  • hahaha. "Postal Servie cover". Well, musicians are well known for covering themselves. man, it's so beautiful.

  • @noapologiesnoregrets Well, I saw a live of Julian Casablancas (singer of the strokes) saying: "now i'm going to do a cover" and he sang a song by the strokes which He wrote. so yeah.

  • @EnokiSkai Yeah, that obviously was a frequent joke of his, as he told us the same thing when I saw him live on stage. And I really did mean what I wrote above.

  • @lucasiscoolish hahaha...wow you must feel like a jackass!

  • Yea......, The Postal Service is made up of Gibbard & Tamborello. Tamborello made up the instrumentals, Gibbard wrote the lyrics. I'm not really sure if you could call a song a cover, based on the vocalist playing outside the band, solo at the most.

  • Ben Gibbard, you beautiful, beautiful man.

  • Haha. Amused by the interruptions in the song.

  • you dudes are idiots man. this is a postal service song.

  • Hahaha this was amazing!

He can have so much fun even with mistakes!

I would be sooo nervous up there!

    What a great guy!

  • great performance, but the beard throws me.

  • LOL he pulls a Colin Meloy at 2:14...

  • it doesn't matter if he is playing this song as Postal Service or Death Cab or by himself it will always be beautiful!

  • Even live his voice is flawless <3 This song is pristine!

  • Is that a beard? I do not approve.

  • If humankind should ever become extinct, I think Ben Gibbard should be put in a time capsule so that who or whatever finds it can see just how beautiful life was.

  • @HalfBillion I wish I could like your comment more than once.

  • @HalfBillion FOR SURE.

  • The tracks were recorded in early 2002, and were written by Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello, and include backing vocals in the studio recording by Jen Wood, whose other collaborations include work for The Black Heart Procession and Joan of Arc. It was the first CD released by The Postal Service, and a preview of Give Up, which was released a month later. The cover artwork was designed by Kozyndan.

  • He is defiantly one of my biggest idols ever . I love you Ben Gibbard :)

  • such a great and talented man

  • You can see the love and respect here. Hearing Ben play this someone else's way is amazing.

  • does anyone know what guitar he is using here?

  • @braydenzaucha Yes, it is actually a 70s style Stella acoustic steel string guitar, I actually picked one up after reading that he used one on "Follow You Into The Dark" ...

  • ..."Is that a match?" - lol! fresh out of lighters, eh? I also like Franqui - very nice, Ben... very nice.

  • no offense, really, but i prefer the iron & wine cover.

  • @EightyOneAndOnly its still his song

  • @bradburyr03 i didn't say the iron & wine cover was better, i just said I PREFER listening to it. i love postal service myself.

  • @EightyOneAndOnly i take offence.

  • @DeJANGOh i don't care.

  • this is better then the other version.

  • He looks soooo much better with a beard!

  • Postal Service is two men. One of them is Ben from DCFC, the other is a totally different dude who did all the music. Ben adapted it to guitar.

  • this is actually from postal service (i knowhes in both)

  • death cab did i side project that turned into the postal service. same artists, different name

  • wrong

  • i've been trying to find out what guitar is playing here for like two monthes, does anybody know?

  • Whole song is C, G, F, capo on 5 or 6

  • I really like all DCFC songs more while played acoustic. Ben's wonderful voice becomes more clean. A great musician indeed!

  • electronic version is better but samuel beams accoustic version is better overall.

  • Comment removed

  • you are a fucking dumbass. he wrote the god damn song you retarded piece of shit

  • @corewhore80 not even close. and I love iron and wine.

  • if you want to play without a capo its just C-G-F

  • Tabs!?!?! please? sounds great!! i really want the tabs! i'm to lazy to learn by ear. help?

  • It's G-D-Cadd9-G-D. But he keeps his 3rd finger on the B string 3rd fret throughout the song and doesn't play the high E. It's a fun one.

  • i love bens mountain man beard in this video

  • Ben could sing the phone book and it would sound melodic.

  • "Is that a match?" Haha

  • Awesome

  • jagolah maen gitarna

  • some people should probably not comment on things they know nothing about.

ben gibbard fronted the postal service before death cab for cutie. he wrote this song.

    look it up.

  • Nooooooooooo The postal service was a side prodject with Jimmy Tomborello of Dntel which was in 2003 he has fronted death cab for cutie since the 90's so maybe you should not comment on things you know nothing about!!!!!

  • Ben Gibbard fronted for postal service AND death cab for cutie at the same time being as dcfc had their first album in I think it was 98? and Postal service had their debut in like 2005? idk but I know he fronted dcfc before postal service.

  • not to start a fight but really, he fronted the postal service at the same time as death cab. so really, its you who knows nothing...

  • @headbang and @dudeman -

I understand the description, it IS a postal service cover, persay, but Ben clearly wrote this song. Dude you are a retard if you dont know that.

  • @osubucksfan1985

.......its postal service cover.......do u not see the coments on other songs comparing the versions of iron and wine v.s the postal service....

  • ...why does it say it's a "cover"? Ben wrote this song...

  • @HeadbangingToJazz no he didnt.... its a cover.

  • @ddudeman66...um, yes, he did...i know what i'm talking about, and obviously you don't. ben gibbard wrote this song.

  • almost has the same rythym and sound as Im yours by jason mraz i wonder if mraz ripped it off

  • i think u might have a case

  • lol its noticeable isnt it?

  • Is that a match?

    Haha I love this guy.

  • aahhh the beird is cool

  • the beard takes all the thunder away from this. hahah

  • I like both the versions this :)

  • pour Mandi Candi :P

C'est pour toi que je suis - I'm here for you

  • I love this acoustic version of the song better than the original. I think as acoustic this would fit as a death cab song better than postal service. But w/e to each is own. And I also love the iron & wine cover. So soothing :)

  • It's not a "Postal Service cover" . . . he wrote this song.

  • its a Ben Gibbard original either way, but if this was a DCFC show, then i suppose it would be considered a postal service cover

  • @Skaman12341234 It's labeled as a cover because Iron and wine covered the original version, which was the inspiration for this song.

  • well technically if he's touring as "Ben Gibbard," it'd still be a cover, rather than if he were touring with the rest of postal service. But he did write the song. I guess that's just how it works in my mind, sorry for being an ass and *trying* to correct you on a technicality

  • @hombre3000 actually, because he wrote the song with a technically different band, under a different name, its a cover.

  • song lyrics on "Give Up" had Ben Gibbard's name credited to them. It's impossible to cover your own song. He's just playing a Postal Service song without Jimmy Tamborello, so he played it as just Ben Gibbard.

  • Wrong.

  • Wrong.

  • @t0mybetterangelx Such Great Heights is originally by the Postal Service, which has Ben Gibbard on vocals. Iron and Wine covered the song, not the other way around.

  • @t0mybetterangelx taken from wikipedia: "Such Great Heights is a single released on January 21, 2003 by The Postal Service ... The tracks were recorded in early 2002, and were written by Ben Gibbard ... Iron & Wine did a cover of the song which was featured on the soundtrack for Garden State. It was released as one of the B-sides of the original Postal Service single."

  • @t0mybetterangelx You are such an idiot. You should research your music more before trying to tell other people they are wrong. Postal Service- ORIGINAL Iron and Wine- COVER Ben Gibbard- AMAZING- and the original composer of this song

  • @hombre3000 what the fuck hombre. look at the lyrics. thats a postal service cover

  • Look up Such Great Heights on Wikipedia . . . Ben Gibbard wrote the song.

  • @hombre3000 dude it even says its a postal service cover

  • Someday you will learn that some things on the internet are incorrect.
