@riomarcos - He deserves a monument / statue in the D.C. Mall, next to the smithsonia..he opened my eyes and made me realize how little I really knew and how egotistical I was to think that faith was a path to real knowledge.
@cosmicforums Bill Nye is an ass. He's not a scientist as far as I am concerned. I saw him go on TV a state that Aliens had positivly never visited Earth. Ever sice then he's just a poor mans Ron Herbert, if Ron Herbert had been full of BS.
That he was on this video with these other great men was an insult.
@monokhem - Wait, you claim he isnt a scientist because he thinks it is unlikely aliens visited this planet? Care to give me a link where he said "positively never visited Earth"? I would very much like to see this evidence. I am also aware that some people WANT aliens to exist so bad that if someone stands their ground against their possibility then alien believers can and will get very upset over it.
@cosmicforums No, and I won't hunt down the quote for you. He said Aliens definatly have not visited us. It was on CNN. Hunt it down if you like, but I've already seen it when it happened. I have no belief one way or the other on Alien visitation, so I wasn't looking for something to be mad at sceptics over. He said it.
Standing your ground against the "possibility" of alien invasion is not the act of a scientist.
@SaganAppreciationSoc Generaly I really don't give a damn. You can think whatever you want about the man. I'm not going to do a bunch of reasearch to enlighten you about one more hack "scientist" out there. It isn't worth the effort.
That's the difference between scientists and Coast To Coast AM fans. The former DO think it's worth the effort to look at the facts.
If Bill said that, it was surely out of context, or a mis-statement. Or he may have be referring to specific cases for which more down to earth explanations have been found.
@SaganAppreciationSoc I watched the whole hour long show and I understood the context. If you don't want to believe it whatever, but i know what he said, he said it repeatedly, and the meaning was clear.
@SaganAppreciationSoc Larry king Live on CNN. It was a special on UFOs or aliens or something, and there were a number of "expert" guests (some of them were coast to coast types argueing from ignorance.) Good luck.
Carl Sagan was fucking awesome! He never gave up on his dream, and he inspired me to look deeper into cosmos and science. Not to mention the dude smoked weed and was still able to become one of science's greatest names.
tis is a great way to honour carl sagan....world needs man like him....i cant express my gratiude to carl sagan in words for he gave me a entierly new dimension too what really science is ... a beautiful man with true love for science ..love u carl....
I can remember the very moment I fell in love with science. I was in 6th grade and it was a Friday. Our science teacher turned off the lights and said "today I've got a video for you to watch." He put in a VHS of an episode of Carl Sagan's Cosmos. While admittedly most of the class sat there snickering about Carl's "70's fashion" or "how he sounds like Kermit the Frog." I sat there listening intently. Carl introduced me to the Universe and from that moment on, I've been hooked!
ohh gosh.. Oh my its Bill Nye! Bill Nye the science guy! well since what their saying is that he's a really great scientist, he loves science more than anything as they say, so why not name the program after him? no matter if he's made good or bad decisions. lets say for instance, you wouldn't want ppl to judge you as a "bad guy" and take away all the good u've done just because u made some bad choices in the past would you?
Bill Nye was a student of Carl's. Well done, both of them. And Neil DeGrasse Tyson was also a young fan of Carl's, who, as a teen, was invited to visit Ithaca by Carl.
That's part of why the Sagan Appreciation Society exists. Anyone who wants future generations to know Carl Sagan's thoughts and accomplishments is already a member of the SAS. They just have to get out there and spread the word.
To push the limits of human exploration. To question everything and undertake the greatest of human ventures, the discovery of who we are and where we came from.
If only there were an after life and he could see how much he has affected the world after his death. Few people deserve immortality. Carl is one who does.
wow I hope that would just make him 2000 times cooler. As a kid my parents always told me he was a horrible baby killer atheist so I always wondered why he was on PBS nerd TV lol
Yup. Nothing wrong with marijuana. People's minds are poisoned against it because of dirty politicians. I'm not a regular user but it certainly helps me center myself on the odd occasions when i get stressed and sometimes just to relax and transcend. :). Only substance i use btw. Its not a gateway anything :) I don't even like alcohol.
are you calling Carl Sagan and I junkies? lol. If a healthy person who occasionally uses a little marijuana and never uses anything else is a junkie than id hate to see what you call a person who has at least one glass of wine a week. Anyway, look at all Carl Sagan accomplished. If that's what a "junkie" can contribute to the world than count me in!
What made Carl Sagan appealing to all, was how he took the complex and articulated it in such a way that it made sense to everyone. Not only was he a genius, but he had incredible social skills that appealed to the masses and this was helpful in spreading important knowledge to people who would not otherwise be interested in learning about science and the wonder of the cosmos.
Years ago a friend of mine who owned a scifi bookstore decided to immortalize Carl by giving him his own word: "sagan" (n.) Unit of measure indicating an enormous number of unspecified size, i.e., "billions and billions". "The sky is clear enough to see a sagan of stars."
Spread it around! Carl was so incredibly cool, he deserves his own word!
Likewise I've suggested a compsci term: the SaganByte. This would be the lower end requirement for running post-Vista Microsoft OSes. That lower end would be a minimum of 4 Billion Bytes of RAM. IE., "Windows 7 needs at least a SaganByte of RAM to run well."
Thanks SAS!!!! :D I read about Obama's nomination of Hartley to Science advisor today. How happy I think Carl would be to see what has happened over these past several weeks. This quote particularly, warmed my heart:
"It's time we once again put science at the top of our agenda and worked to restore America's place as the world leader in science and technology."
-Barack Obama
After 8 years of "demons" I can't help but commend out new president elect's words :D
He would have loved it. How I long to see another pale blue dot out there somewhere. The arrow would never have been invented without a target to shoot at. Mankind needs a target.
"How I long to see another pale blue dot out there somewhere" We hpefully may not have to wait too much longer, just a few weeks ago we got the first pictures of exoplanets and last week discovered water vapour and CO2 in exoplanet atmospheres. If NASA can get the Terrestrial Planet Finder up we could have an earthlike planet pic within 10 years!
So simple and yet so complicated. That's what visionaries have always done and yet we always outgrow/acheive/fail/surpass the target.
Phil, the "target" is the value which people fight about politically and religiously. I can imagine MANY scientific goals for humanity and yet to enforce them makes me a dictator to some extent. That's one of the reasons why atheists are upset by religion.
The Kosher diet is an example. A healthy diet for most.
Glad you replied. I owe you an apology concerning the "Pope" vid I did, and your correction of my overly-quick judgment of Hawking's accuracy over the matter. I'm sure you'd like it said on video, and I will at some point soon.
*A* target. Yes, you're right, we should have many. But there will be no enforcement where a potential 2nd Earth is concerned, unless you consider nature's burden of curiosity to be a use of force. When religion stops telling Humanity it is lowly I MIGHT just shut up. :)
