@c2inomaha It's pretty theoretical in Western and Central Europe (e.g. Britain, France, Germany, and the Czech Republic). Many former colonial empires, including Britannia herself, abandoned their empires following the Second World War and subsequently became prosperous welfare states. I have yet to see how providing safety net measures infringes upon anyone's rights. If you hate paying a quarter of your income to the feds, then why don't you argue for cuts in military spending?

Last time I checked, 57% of our bloated budget is in entitlements (transfer payments from Peter's checking account to Paul's checking account. @c2inomaha Um, yeah, last time I checked Ireland and Greece were two of the most non-socialist countries in Europe. In fact, Ireland abhorred socialism because of its strong ties to Roman Catholicism. The same goes for Greece which during the early 21st Century preferred supply side deregulation rather than social reform.

@KantianEdifice Ireland's leading party Fine Gael sits with the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe group in the European Parliament, and is a Euro classic populist party. Glancing at govt spending in all categories they are virtually identical to that of UK, Spain and Norway.

Just because they're a party of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats doesn't necessarily mean they're liberals in the American sense of the word. For European governments, the term liberal is very ambiguous. In some countries, such as Great Britain (with its Liberal Democratic Party) and Denmark (with its Danish Social Liberal Party), the term liberal usually refers to a person who is a proponent of social reform.

@KantianEdifice let me help with your definitionating: Euro-socialism is taxing the piss out of the taxpayer base, and using that money for entitlements, neat social programs, social safety net, and vast numbers kept employed in over-paid govt jobs. While "classic" socialism is defined as community ownership of means of production(which of course is communism, which is what we call it). So if a country spends itself into crisis on entitlements, that's socialism. Nez pas?

@KantianEdifice actually, I haven't advocated about taxes here at at, since it is trying enough to get the local louts to debate the facts of federalism as intended by the founders(if we stuck to that, there would be no massive deficit - recall the debates in the early years of the republic over their modest spending).

Our government is trying to make people equal on this level, which is what this "Thomas Paine" is advocating against. There are several good videos on YouTube about him.
Even if you don't agree with him or my intreptation of him you will find a much more rewarding character than Bob Basso and Glenn Beck.
In Agarian Justice Paine is championing the cause of the poor. He is advocating for pension for fram hands paid for by the wealthy.
Paine saw a problem wanted to use the government to fix it and wanted to tax the rich to pay for it. That make him a liberal.

You can see the similarity between Franklin’s quote and Paine’s quote. Both held that wealth was accumulated in dependence on society.
