Denver, being how high it is, gets just about anything. Random downpours and hailstorms (and the occasional blizzard) in the middle of May and June are certainly not uncommon, but three inches of hail is a little rare. I would expect it to be rare in most places, though.
I've was born and still live in Denver; beleive me that is hail, I've been through a few hail storms in Denver and that has happen a few times, just like when it's 65 degress one day, the next snowing three inches. Denver is like that, but why people move here is the 300 hundred days of sunshine a year, and the best overall sking in the country..
You said that you wouldn't be caught out in it. The thing is, we don't always know when it is coming. We may have clouds, but quite often nothing comes from them and they just blow away. Sometimes we might think we are just going to get rain, and we are surprised with hail. The weather can sometimes change rapidly, and one can find themselves caught out in something like this.
I remember this storm very well. That hail hurt like hell. & the majority of Denver's streets & intersections were flooded which made for fun driving.
i heard the damages in Denver from this storm cost over 650 million to repair... crazy stuff. Hail is soo underestimated! =O
