What's weird to me is, the challenger se has the old chrysler 300m 3.5 engine rated at 250 HP and 250 TQ...They say it does 0-60 in 7.8 The 350-400 pound lighter 253 HP and 255 TQ 300m with the same tranny did a best 0-60 in 7.7 seconds. I wonder how the challenger se can stay with the 300m being that much heavier? It's not really important, I was just curious... Maybe I missed something they added to the challenger that the 300m didn't have?
Who said don't buy a muscle car for the MPGs (lol)
Real life, Pacific NW driving:
My 1.9L Escort = 30mpg
My Challenger RT 6-speed, Idaho to Olympia with 3 passengers (+ me) and a loaded trunk = 27.3 mpg. I passed the slow cars, stayed in the ballpark of the speed limits, had fun merging once I hit the freeway, showed off a little once I got where I was going.
The RT goes up the passes with better MPGs than the Durango (318cid) gets going down!
@skiidahonorthsouth saw ur old post and was wondering, did ur 6spd R/T have the gas guzzler tax? because now they do and supposedly it gets the same if not slightly better MPG's than the automatic when the auto dosent have the guzzler tax. just wondered if you knew anything about that. also its kinda amazing this car that weighs 4,000 lbs with a v8 engine and near 400hp is able to hit mid to upper 20's mpg range. I heard they fibbed about the 376hp for insurance, really has like 400 or so.
@GMCman82 LOL both of us are right on with our youtube messages! Anyway, YES I had the $%^&&^%$ guzzler tax even though in real world driving it gets better MPGs than our Subaru. And yes I am somewhat irritated about it. If I ever do get a speed ticket, I'm going to argue I have already paid!
@skiidahonorthsouth guzzler tax is to force us into buying little cars we dont want when the technology is there that can drastically improve the mpgs of a v8. a guy i work with bought a 2011 cruze 1.4 turbo automatic and mixed driving was getting 22 mpg. didnt even hit 30 until the freeway- topped at 32 which is 2 mpgs under the sticker hwy and got less than sticker city. ecoboost gets the same as a v8 under load. avalanche gets 14, never seen the tax on it. like e-check this needs to go away
I agree up to a point--- these are realy not econo boxes, if I wanted a shopping cart on wheels I would be looking at videos of Smart cars-- that would make me hard.
Pnly problem is the A e Rabs screwed us with super expensive fuel and we do want to drive and pay the rent--- so we need better fuel economy than my old 440 -six pack and 8 miles to the gallon.
GM have applied for bancruptcy, dont you see what is happening in this world, cars like this days are numbered, its not some hobby we are talking about.
dont see how thats gonna happen anyways, alot of people love cars with big engines like this. Our government needs to leave the cars alone, they don't know shit about them, let the people who have delt with cars their whole lives worry about them.
That's why you buy a muscle car now before the fuel regulations take affect. Once that happens, any "so called" "muscle car" will most likely be junk. The current Challenger is for sure a muscle car so buy now ! =) Don't hate me for buying a Mustang over a Dodge, I like them both!
American gas guzzlers, i like them but that is what they are and in todays economy they are not a viable form of transport, America cannot get away from big engined/low refined cars.
i kept track of my miles per gallon in my RT automatic when i went on a long trip and i got 28 on the highway. so i got a little bit more then what the dealer sais
The problem with the looks in most retro designs and especially this is it needs to be wide enough too. This car is long enough its heavy enough but its not wide enough.
it's not so much how evenly matched the challenger rt is against the mustang gt, but how close the rt and srt8 are. there's no compelling reason i see to spend the extra dough on the srt8 when when the rt is nearly as fast from 0-60 and in the 1/4 mile and you can still have it with the LSD and it weighs less. and seriously, you can get more power out of that 5.7 without too much effort. they get 390hp out of that same engine in the new ram. save your money lol
They seem to run slow here as most SRT8 with auto's seem to run 13.0-13.1 as per R&T and Mtr Trnd. Maybe higher altitude. Based on that I'm gussing 12.8 for the SRT 8 6spd and 13.5-13.6 for the 6spd RT.
I do like the look of the challenger, but next to an 05-08 Mustang it looks too big. A stock mustang GT with 300 hp can do 0-60 in under 5.5 sec and the 1/4 mile in 13.7. With 375 hp it should do 0-60 in under 5 sec and the 1/4 mile in the upper 12s low 13s
The R/T starts at $29,000 but goes up when you start adding the stuff you want into it like the MyGig Navigation System or the 20-inch chrome wheels, etc. You can go to dodges website and build your own and find out the price.
Thanks for posting, this answered a question I have had for a while about the manual trans fuel economy. Glad they did not leave the stick drivers out in the cold on that one!
