Coach, do you mind sharing how Josh has progressed so rapidly with deadlifting? I'm at the same BW but I've plateaued at 150kg and he doesn't seem to stop improving. Does he train with the 5/3/1 programme or is there some other secret? Would really appreciate a reply, thanks.
@BROZKNOWS Hook till the end of days. When I started to incorporate hook grips my dlift and cleans went up a lot. Check out my channel john I put a couple vids on of cleans and FS!
John, I'm going to buy a new barbel, Either the Rogue bar or Pendlay bushing bar. Do you have any experience with these 2 bars? and do you think centre knurling is important for squats?
nice i dont know if that 407 in the title is the 64kg translated into pound but i deadlifted 405lbs and then shrugged and my shoulders are perfectly fine except for my left but that was from something else
A really bad thing for our shoulder is to be seated in front of our computers like a monkey, not shrugging those weights. That is power, it really helped me in swimming.
I know he lifts way more than me and he is very talented, but that doesn't mean that shrugging that amount of weight can possibly be good for your shoulders.
@BROZKNOWS a more interesting question: Do your lifters explode up onto their toes while deadlifting? I saw some olers way back in the day practice this way
when you have lifters deadlift would you say you coach a 'clean-style deadlift' i.e.have them try to hold the exact some positions as they would in a clean?
You've got "hook grip" in the title. Do you have your guys use that grip exclusively when pulling deadlifts or is it personal preference? I'm guessing you have them use it, as if it's a clean pull.
Broz, is there going to be a nutrition section on the new site? Myself, and I'm sure many others, would like to hear your advice on what has/hasn't worked for you over the years in regards to eating and diet. Strong lift as well.
@RandomStevie Heh interesting. My PB on DL is only 175 KG, but I haven't tried maxing on those in over a year. Just saying man, you squat almost as much as me and DL more, but I'm winning on clean and jerk (granted, I'm older, but smaller, heh). Get them up! :P
Now to everyone saying this is bad for the shoulders, shrugging 185kg is not a lot. Many gym rats who aren't particularly talented but just work out a lot can do >220kg
That statement is horribly misguided. "Most"? Quite the opposite. "Most" average gym goers certainly cannot deadlift nearly 500 pounds. In fact, 400 is out of reach for the grand majority. Tell a gym rat or bro that you just deadlifted 400 pounds and 9 out of 10 times you'll get a "Holy shit man that's a lot" comment/stare.
Now, when it comes to real lifters who work with consistent programming and diet, I can see truth in this.
@RedWildz I was talking about shrugs, in which case 200kg+ is not particularly impressive for those who train the movement consistently. I don't do them more than a handful of times a year, and I've hit that margin before (granted, with straps).
I had injured lower back half year ago doing clean and press.I had to heal for months. Now Im better, but my question is this.
I want to do powerlifting exercises like deadlift, squats, and weightlifting moves like clean and snatch. But I dont feel my lower back is strong enough for these exercises.Or in other words I am afraid I will get injured again and this time I will rupture my disc. What exercises should I do to strenghten my lower back and all the core? But mainly lower back.
@HermanHermes Good mornings and back extensions are good for lower back, bubkas (look up the pole vaulter for reference), weight V-ups and Russian twists for the front and obliques. Those will get you started.
@eburnsdaniel He's using a hook grip where the fingers wrap around the thumb, look it up for a picture, it stops the bar rolling like it does with a normal double overhand grip.
@sh1tpickle f you were to actually "roll" the shoulders back then it could be harmful, however when the delts and traps go vertical then it's totally safe.

When you have a lifter deadlift is it in place or, or addition to squatting?
Also, do your lifters squat once-a-day? Or once-a-session (assuming two sessions a day)? I'm currently squatting once-a-day.
