Hey, not too bad. That was a good effort and it definitely takes guts from anyone to record themselves playing an instrument and singing. But the main problem is that "Don't Stand So Close To Me" was never meant to be played like this. It doesn't sound quite right on an acoustic guitar. Also, it sounds like you're trying to cover the 1986 version, which was HORRIBLE. The Police were about to break up at that point. Look up the original (1981) song...it was much better.
@ct92404 his cover has nothing to do with 86 version in regard to melody nor chord changes.
he only got the chords for chorus wrong. Besides, he looks like Gollum wearing glasses. He would never have problems with minor whores unleashing themselves at him.
Gollum? Whoa...no need for personal insults. It's not a great cover, but give the kid a break. Like I said, it takes guts to record yourself singing so I give him credit for that. And he played the guitar well, which is more than I can do. I just don't particularly like the way he's singing this song, and the 1981 one is better. But his voice really isn't that bad, and I'd have to hear him singing other songs to give a fair opinion. Like I said, give the kid a break.
@ct92404 it's you who should give him a break and stop lecturing him on what kind of guitar he should play that or not. Secondly, there is no "1981 version". Thirdly, there's an acoustic cover of that song by 'sjeanmaclead' on the right, which is much better, so it actually is possible to play that song as an acoustic version. Nevertheless, one should come up with more interesting chord inversions though
Yes there IS a 1981 version of Don't Stand So Close to me. That was the original album version. It was on the Zenyatta Mondatta album. You really don't know that much about The Police, do you? They released a new version in 1986, which sounded completely different, and it was awful. Both the original 1981 version, and the 1986 version are on YouTube. Look them up and compare them.
@ct92404 I repeat. There is no 1981 version. Do you know why? Because Zenyatta Mondatta was released in 1980. Got that? Now I could be rude and call you a fuckface, but I won't. I won't shit at the 1986 version either, because it has great guitar work from Andy, and the chorus is much more profound - although it sounds like solo Sting.
And I could call you an arrogant prick, but I won't. If you ask any true Police fan, they will tell you that the 1986 version SUCKS. It was absolutely horrible. It sounded too pretentious, and there was no need to re-make the original. By that time, the Police were not getting along and they were about to break up...and the 1986 song shows it.
Now, if you want to carry on a more civil conversation, that's fine. But otherwise, this discussion is over.
@ct92404 first of all, you ridiculed yourself, telling me about a non-existent 1981 version and then implying that I don't know much about The Police. If that is your definition of civil conversation, then I would never invite you to dinner for the fear of getting schooled with equally weak competence in other subjects.
In 1986 The Police were already broken up de facto. The 86 version is a solo Sting song, with Andy's guitars (like two songs from NLTS album) and a drum computer.
