The Toyota bashing is blatant BS. Other manufacturers like GM and Ford have issues that are totally unreported(but that, were they Toyota make wall to wall media circus).

I'm an American who LOVES Toyotas. you are right - they are just using Toyota as a distraction. But the truth is, the Obama administration's real goal is not to bash the Japanese, but to justify taking over yet another business. They are setting the stage right now - it's happening with all kinds of businesses here right now. The socialist takeover will work best if the best and most successful businesses are destroyed or taken over. Toyota builds most of the cars driven in America right here.
You cannot imagine what's it's like to have been raised during the time when people were taught HOW to think and to question everything, and to have to see the way education was used to do an about-face and teach people WHAT to think. My husband I only drive Fords now (and have for a decade or two). BUT -- I had a little '78 Toyota Corolla in college and it was the most reliable, low maintainence transportation I've ever had.
I think the average joe watches his job evaporate (and those of his family and friends), sees imports increase while domestic manufacturing (jobs) decrease, and then makes a simple conclusion - foreign "bad", domestic "good". So we will probably see some protectionism. Very poitically useful. I've owned US, Japanese, and German cars - enjoyed them all. With our current economy, I can't afford any of them as new or slightly used. Maybe my next ratcar will be a '91 corolla..
what has given toyota the advantage in the past was that their cars were very reliable, while many american car buyers felt like they got a 20k pos that didnt even last 100k miles.
there were many american 'Recalls' over the years that were never even reported to the CAR OWNERS let alone the national press.
Fom the Center for Auto Safety Website: "The side saddle fuel tank design installed in all 1973-87 General Motors full-size pickups and cab-chassis trucks is the worst auto crash fire defect in the history of the U.S. Department of
Transportation. Based on data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System
(formerly known as the Fatal Accident Reporting System), over 1,800 people
were killed in fire crashes involving these trucks from 1973 through 2000.
@KimInLosAngeles I agree. This problem is big. I remember Ford got sued for hundreds of million in America when one person died of a faulty design. So a quick figure is a 3 billion lawsuit, and the fact they had 2000 complaints makes this a very nasty situation.
@Michigansnowpony I disagree, I think the problem is a big one. cars not doing basic functions like accelerating and braking and causing the accident. I have not seen something like this from a Japanese company before. Good for you if you think its a government scam, but I think Toyota are in real trouble over this one.
Because it is Toyota that's why they have admitted the mistake. If it was GM they never would have admitted any faults. So much for Toyota's honesty! Thats the difference Asian and American culture.
Greedy American corporations now shamelessly making money on Toyota's fault. And that is what is taught in the USA from childhood. Greedy lots.
Toyota Is to good for Americans They need china made junk. I believe it is the computer being jammed by all the sound wave junk we have. cell phones , radar , home land security junk to scan us and our cars. How about everything we don't Know about that they are testing.
I guy is in jail for driving a toyota and he said that the car unexpectedly accelerated. They didnt believe him and he is currently in serving 7 years. Toyota knew of this problem and boasted that they saved money by not recalling the defect. I would never buy a toyota!
All of Toyota's "problems" have been know in multiple countries for an extensive amount of time. Solutions were being sought and implemented as well.
The US(thievery division) has held this info in their hand of cards and is now playing it as a distraction for the People is needed, AGAIN as thievery continues. This ship is going down with average americans watching below deck, on TV.
I think that the market and commodities are down because the dollar is up.
It seems like volatility from foreigners seeking safety in the dollar, then pulling out, is one of the main drivers behind the changes we are seeing these days.
Otherwise, why would the stock market and gold move together so much of the time? Shouldn't they tend to move opposite each other?
The hysteria by the American MSM borders on idiocy..They had footage on ABC news of a test driver trying to turn off a push button start Lexus while it was in gear and moving. ABC news claimed it was a PROBLEM. I even figured out it was DESIGNED that way so a 2 year old or an adult American driver couldn't "accidently" shut off the car while hurtling down the road at 65mph. Total Smear campaign underway by the USMSM. Look for some financial ju jitsu form Japan soon.
as an american, i can't stand to watch TV and see what the politicians and Wall Street are trying to distract us with. i didn't know there were Toyota hearings until reading about it. after the headaches of unreliable Chevy cars from the 70's and 80's, I've driven Japanese models since and won't look back.
thanks for such a good commentary. It's sad that we have to hear somebody from Australia for normal point of view. our Congress is so horribly corrupt.
Gm is wasting $1000 per car trying to get people to change. Because Toyota has proved beyond reasonable doubt that Toyotas keep going.

When an American CEO commits massive fraud and destroys the finance sector, he bribes Congress to steal from the taxpayers to bail him out.

People should know that
Japanese LOBBY only for their people & their companies, like Toyota.
They don't care about victims.
Proof:
200,000 Asian women (even 10-year old girls) & female Allied Nation prisoners were gang raped by Japanese.
Japanese are LOBBYING to many nations to teach in their history books that
the victims were VOLUNTEERED PROSTITUTES
who received higher salary than Japanese army generals.
Many victims are still alive.
Japanese are LOBBYING that to many nations.

US is NOT making a fuss over nothing.
34 people died because of Toyota.
#1 importer of Toyota is US, so majority of complaints are from US.
Sudden acceleration is happening in other nations, too.
Their own records say that Japanese knew this problem & have been hiding this since 2000.
They lobbied to minimize the number of recall vehicles to save money.
Even their own report says that they should celebrate themselves for saving at least $100 million by lobbying.
