  • BEST BARITONE FOREVER !

  • Antirossini.

    And awful!!!

  • Oh, my God, he is absolutely wonderful. And God, is he gorgeous!!!!!

  • Nice performance. I have heard a Hampson recital in a pretty large theater, and his voice carried very well there at every dynamic level.

Granted, Hampson is no Leonard Warren. But his voice has ample size and considerable resonance. When he sang "Der Doppelganger," Hampson's sound at full volume made the theater's back wall vibrate, so much so that I could feel it in the middle rows:).

  • He's not always my favorite, but my god... he kills this piece. bravo!

  • After 1000000000 La cavatina di Figaro you must try something new.

  • MUY BUENA VERSIÓN PERO SIGO CREYENDO QUE LA MEJOR DE TODAS ES LA DE CARLOS JULIO RAMIREZ. SE LAS RECOMIENDO.

  • bello, divertido... MUY recomendable

  • I think the conductor forgot to wait for Hampson to do long notes at 2:34 I don't think that was on purpose. Hampson usually makes long notes on that part.

  • @DonQuixotec It wasn't the conductor... It was just that Hampson's voice wasn't set in the right place for the A. He knew he wouldn't hit it, so he didn't try. You can even notice the conductor at 2:34 specifically watching him for his portamento and continuance.

  • One of the best performances of the cavatina! Thomas Hampson knows well how to have fun with this piece, and that's the secret to make a "better than mediocre" performance of this song. Truly is, that Mr. Hampson always made outstanding performances of this song!! Even when he fails the high note at 2:33, he makes fun of it and blast away a super high a few seconds after... He's truly amazing!

  • Oh my god he is so wonderful. :D

  • Thomas Hampson is a class act.

  • Some people have no sense of humor! OH THE HUMANITY.

  • great

  • 2:40 OMG A TENOR HIGH C

  • Comment removed

  • @abc1232649 it's a tenor high C... that's why it's impressive

  • @cordeiropascoal Even better: he is a bariton ;-). Great performance!

  • @cordeiropascoal Tenor? He is a baritone

  • @MarcelloArletti This high note is called "tenor C" no matter who sings it. That's why it's so impressive! There are not many baritones or basses that can do this ( 2:40 ).

  • cuanta elegancia, que buen espectáculo!

  • Try listening to the Hermann Prey rendition and see for yourself if Hampson even comes close.

  • I'm sorry but Hampson wouldn't have half the career his had if he wasn't so attractive and charming. His voice pales in comparison with other lyric baritones like Robert Merrill and Hermann Prey. In this recording, his voice lacks resonance and power and agility. He had no business throwing that high note into the cadenza. He does not live up to the hype.

  • @fatherman73 I don't think he's charming. He's just attractive and plays the diva. Hermann Prey on the other hand IS genuinely charming, and manages to be very sexy without resorting to pomp and ludicrous bravado. And as you said, his voice is deficient in terms of resonance, power, grace and precision - it's just very LOUD and shimmery, but "all that glistens is not gold". If one isn't terribly familiar with Opera, Fachs & Classical Music in general, of course, it's very easy to be mesmerised.

  • @fatherman73 Most people didn't recognize that Hampsons voice is louder than most other opera stars I think only pavarotti as singer was louder. Hear his recording of the proms!!! Then you know what I'm talking about but you're right his technique isn't the best, but look at pavarotti his technique wasn't that good and altough it sounded uncomperable.

  • @NarakDur You cannot judge how "loud" someone sings by a recording. I heard Pavarotti live unamplified in opera. His was always a lyric tenor voice. Similarly I believe Hampson is a lyric baritone. Lyric voices cannot sing "louder" than dramatic voices, neither Pavarotti nor Hampson could for example be heard in a Wagner opera, if they tried they'd have ruined their voices. Not that it matters... all opera singers are heard unamplified in opera when singing repertory appropriate to their voices.

  • This guy has such karisma :) Bravo!!!!

  • HIGH C?!!?

  • @MalloryHoffman now it´s a B

  • @Heldenbariton1 at 2:40? I'm pretty sure that's a C...

  • @MalloryHoffman it´s a H

  • 3:45. That's my trying to drink a thick milkshake from a straw face.

  • Simpatico

  • His face at 2:22. Awesome.

  • John Rawnsley is better.

  • This man got talent!

  • Great Figaro! Something boyish in himQ

  • 4:05 - the bloody bastard's too fast!!! He knows it!! Watch for the expression of success! Grudging admiration..........

  • Que voz!!!!!

  • Think I like Prince Poppycock more thb

  • By far my favourite rendition of this song. He plays the character so well, the best Figaro I have ever seen. Always brings a smile to my face. Bravisimo!

  • Master!

  • Bravissimo.

  • 4:05 buen momento.

  • 4:05-4:30 is definitely my favorite. :)

  • perfecto!!! di qualita!!! bravisimo!

  • woody woodpeacker brought me here

  • @Twilightfan964 "woody woodpeacker", in Italian "picchiarello".

  • Hitler can sing better. (standing firm, rasing hard up)(shout) ''ALL HEIL ADOLF HITLER!''

  • @LordWingDeath silly person, hitler is dead

  • Comment removed

  • @LordWingDeath "lol so edgy and hardcore XD"

Just shut the fuck up, kid.

  • @LordWingDeath Alrighty then.....

  • genialissimo

  • From the beginning a very convincing Figaro. Bravo!

  • This dude kills it every time. Loud, resonant clear and fast. Best Figaro ever.

  • Bravo, Mr. Hampson!! Good voice, wonderful singing and a true showman.

  • scrooge conducting the orchestra

  • BRAVO BRAVISIMO.....!

  • Classic.

    That's all i can say.

  • anyone here knows who is the conductor ? tell me please .. thanks ^^

  • anyone here knows who is the conductor ? tell me please .. ^^

  • lalalalala!!!!

  • damn i love music

  • the conductor is the best.

    ah bravo figaro bravo bravissimo..!!!

  • He's wonderful!

  • he had a few red bulls before this.

  • Mr Hampson is the best!!! such an amazing voice, talented and so charming!

  • A tenor singing baritone.

  • @Webarton He sounds like a baritone to me.

  • @Webarton idiot

  • His fast singing puts every single rapper to shame. (No I am not a rap fan)

  • Wow almost 2 minutes shorter then the one I just watched. Definatly a lot faster tempo, interesting. But TH is so amazing it does not matter.

  • Actually, this is italian.

  • @frankbaritone TROLLED

  • Where I can find the music sheets?

  • @yiannisj A rather stupid question from someone that obviously has the internet but still needs everything "spoon-fed" to him.

I can only imagine what you were like in school and/or the workplace.

  • and they say black people invented rap

  • @1lamanonegra none of his words rhyme except for "LaLaLaLaLaLa" lmao.. xD

  • @1lamanonegra try to make a rapper sing as any opera performer, or just sustain notes as they do... you will find any -good- heavy metal singer capable of such things, because of their classic base, but rappers are like thousands of light years away from this...

  • I think I would just die to hear him sing this live. He is so great to watch too!

  • Is this real

  • @kylealacy lol

  • I don't have to understand the language to enjoy it. Brilliant music!

  • Looks like Offenbach conducting!

  • say what you want on mr.hampson but you have to admit he has great hair

  • Thomas Hampson is a very good barton. Who can sa that he's bad? Nobody, it's sure.

Dietrich Fischer Dieskau was his teache. He was so good too!

  • 3.40-3.44 very nice.

  • ... apparently according to wikipedia MIKA borrowed the chorus to Grace Kelly from this song... Largo al factotum... somehow I'm just not hearing it.

  • @Chocohall

    The rhythm, maybe?

  • Wow That was fun to watch!

  • fortunatissimo e sopratutto stonatissimo.

  • Wow!!! BRAVO!!!

  • 4:19

  • I used to have a VHS tape of Thomas Hampson & Guenther Von Kannen's duet from Don Pasquale (Malatesta) They were both flawless in their sound and injected so much humour & personality into their performance. And the speed and diction; hip hop has nothing on opera as far as I'm concerned.

  • Absolutely amazing perfomance. Except the high note at 2:41 his voice, Italian, and performance is absolutely flawless!!!

  • Thomas Hampson is by far my favorite opera singer. but if u cant tell, he looks like such a smug-nosed brit!!! just the way he looks and jutts out his chin.

  • @double08ty He supposedly is. Highly arrogant and narcissistic.

  • @Schamschi i met him at a gala in canada he`s very modest and humble :)

  • @double08ty He's neither. He's American, and I've met him after one of his concerts, he's a very nice and down-to-earth guy.

  • he's very attractive!I mean it!!

  • Hampson is so talented witch languages! His Italian sounds great as does his German!

  • I like how he suddenly remembers about the 'cavaliere.' LOL.

  • wow, amazing work

  • So, I guess Rossini won the bet with the guy that said he couldn't put ten thousand triplets in a single song

  • what's figaro

  • @shadylanem

    it's the Barber's name.

When he is repeating Figaro...figaro....FIGARO....he is demonstrating how the crowd is always calling for him. Since he is a "factotum/ jack of all trades/ matchmaker/ alcahuete" they go to him for favors.

  • @shadylanem Figaro is a black and white kitten who first appeared in Disney's Pinocchio. thats what i remember

  • @SWEETXXSUGARXXANGEL Created by playwright Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais for the central character in his plays 'The Barber of Seville' (1775), 'The Marriage of Figaro' (1784) and 'The Guilty Mother' (1792).

  • @SWEETXXSUGARXXANGEL Beaumarchais may have based the character's name on the French phrase fils Caron meaning "son of Caron", which was his own nickname and would have been pronounced in a similar way. In modern French the word figaro has acquired the meaning "barber", reflecting the character's profession.

  • You serious? It's one of the most famous operas in the world.

  • BRAVO!!! beautiful music from the Latin!

  • bravo....Bravo.....

  • Leave the high C's to juan diego....Love Mr. Hampson but that was the only part where I didn't completely enjoy it

  • Who could dream of a better Figaro?

  • groooooooooooosoooooooooooooooo

  • BRAVO!...HE IS THE BEST ONE TO SING THI ARIA...:Din my opinion...:Dim happy when i hear and see him...:D

  • Sono il factotum de la ciIIIIIIIIiiiiiii=taaaaaaaaaaa!

  • ISSO EH COISA DO DIABO

    KI VIADISSE

  • q coisa estupida

  • He is exceptional! Stupenda! great Rossini!

  • this performance... Di QUalita! di qualita!

  • @kald0rei " Di QUalita!di qualitá!ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

Largo al factotum della Mediocritá! ahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

  • @bodiloto "Largo al factotum della Mediocritá!" Sei troppo rigido.

    Studiate e ascoltate.Avec amitie Nicola.

  • Bravo!!!

Actually, no mistake at 2:33. There's traditionally a high note there, but for fun, Mr. Hampson chooses to skip it, and adds a few extra, extra high ones just seconds later.

We can hear him because a well-trained opera singer can project a full sound without screaming. I saw Mr. Hampson in recital and the sound was prodigious! If you want to hear a real cannon, listen to Leonard Warren.

  • It is written this way. It is written specifically that the clarinets start playing halfway through the singer's third quarter note, the D, with no defined "a piacere" or fermata or anything to imply otherwise. It is obvious to me and hopefully someone else that it is the kind of humor that Rossini often has in his music.

It was probably a baritone who's high G was very much liked who decided to show it off a bit more, since most the high notes in the written cavatina are short and percussive.

  • @LibbySingsMezzo that high G actually isnt written, its just something that almost everyone interpolates

  • @LibbySingsMezzo Oh absolutely, Thomas Hampson is an absolute beast and it is completely acceptable in this context to skip the high note for comedic effect. And yes, Leonard Warren is a cannon but it doesn't really matter. Let's keep in mind that he is a) BEHIND the orchestra and b) the objective isn't always (if ever, actually) to be the loudest. We all have different instruments! Some of the greatest singers I know are successfully singing piano to this day! ;)

  • In 2:33 it wasn't a Mr. Hampson mistake. It was a director with his orchestra!!! He was to early!

    Great voice Mr. Hampson!

  • how can we hear him without microphone i dont get it?

  • They are trained for it. All opera singers sing without microphone. Voice really is the most marvelous instrument of all.

  • Looks/sounds like the performance at the Rossini Gala at Lincoln Center, NYC. i have the CD - nice to see what the laughter was about! thanks

  • Grande Hampson!!!!!!

  • WOW

(I'm looking for "Largo al factotum" by Ugo Ugaro. May be somebody can help me ?)

  • That is because there is not a high G written there, it goes G, B, D - and the clarinets go, making it a joke on the usual build-up-to-show-off in opera, as the audience expects it. In fact I find it ruining the piece a little to sing the G there.

The rest on piacere is just him being cocky, yes :p

  • I just enjoy how he's playing on the expectations of the audience..

  • Comment removed

  • Bravo Hampson! Fantastico!

  • Comment removed

  • He's excellent, he fits completely the rol he's demanded, but I understand your point; I mean, if I fuck everyday Jessica Alba or Megan Fox, I'd be totally bored after a while. But, if you mix Jessica Alba and Megan Fox in a hot bathtub and they both... wait, what was I talking about? Oh yes, if you work with him you might get bored after a while if it's only the same attitude.

  • It's not that I just got used to him...he is always just Thomas Hampson, whether he sings Traviata (Germont, Faust by Busconi, Ernani , Simone Bocanegra....he never plays a part...he always plays Thomas Hampson. There ar much better artists them Hampson. Ten years ago he still was a fabulous singer...not anymore now. It hurts me also to notice this...he used to be my hero
