That van can take a 100mph head on collision with a tank and come out without so much as a scratch. Ive seen other crash tests with them, they are incredibly solid.
The longer and heavier is the car that is hit, the worth the outcome of a crash like that. A small and light car will not be cut in two but pushed aside. Pushed aside very hard, though. Little chance for anyone to survive.
that's why they chose this long, heavy car.
Besides, cars of these times were not designed to sustain side impact.
Today's cars are designed to sustain even hitting a pole sideways.
@armymatt83 I don't know about the credibility of that test. I saw it several times and at various points and viewing angles during the test you can see LOTS of brown dust coming out of the 59'. The tells me that there is a lot of rust under that car, comprimising the stregnth integrity of the Bel Air. The frame, floors, everything it seems was pulverizing into rust dust. As if the 59' sat in a farm field for 30 years and was make to look good for the test.
The car hit was a 1971-1974 chevy Impala or caprice 4 door, the speed was definately allot more than 30 LOL, New cars are much better by far but at that speed of impact nothing is GOOD lol I own a 1972 impala 4 door hardtop and a 1972 2 door hardtop, i belive at that speed both of my cars would split in half, however I also own a 2010 4x4 crew cab silverado that would split in half in the same situation, i know it would. Thank god for newer cars and by far better safety, drive safe!
you have no idea of how serious this is, first thing you should do is slow down when you drive cause apparently you dont understand what speed can do!!!
The reason the car splits into two parts here is simple.
That car was a cut and shunt which is doen with two cars which have been written off by insurence. One car as front damage the other has back damage. Cut them into two and put the two parts together and you've got a brand new car but with a weak point. When involved in any type of accident the car normaly breaks into two parts like the car on this video.
I dont think it was a cut and shut. 99% of small cars would do this if hit on the side by a large SUV. The strongest parts of a car are the front and rear. The side is the weakest as there is no strength in the pillars.
well in the newest volvo the people on the side that got hit would be dead, BUT the people on the opposite side the van hit may have EXTREME injury, but especially in an xc90 where the sills are higher then you may survive.
When this van that splits the car in half hits a volvo - at the speed in the video, the passengers of the volvo will certainly be dead. I guess that this crash occured at 80 km/h - which is deadly at a side impact even in a SUV.
Yeah, I wouldn't use this to say old cars weren't sturdy. This test was done at what looks like at least 70-80mph. Many modern cars would split in half having a van slam into the side at 70 or 80 MPH. Maybe not some beefy cars, but the chance you would survive an impact (meaning the crash forces themselves/Gforces) of an 80 MPH crash aren't too good. Then if you keep in mind this was a side impact, it makes it worse. Internal injuries are much more likely in side crashes versus front.
The guy who did this said "earlier cars were sturdier". They were heavier, but now days with modern computers and alloys, cars are lighter, stronger, and have more efficient crumple zones to keep you safe. Nevertheless, this van was going what looked like at least 70MPH. Even today nobody should live through this unless the van was replaced with a smaller car.
yet that test is kind of flawed, although a lot of t-bones happen, at that speed would be like getting hit with a small train. highly unlikely yet they do have to do every test at least once.
I was gonna say it looks like a 71 Impala or Malibu, but i paused it over and over and noticed its a 70's Holden Caprice which had similar styling cues from the US GM Chevrolet cars. I cant remember if they made the Holdens on a frame or not. A frame would have been sturdy and safer like the American Caprice Classics.
Does anyone know what kind of sedan that is? From above it looks like a mid 70s Impala 4 door.

Pretty obvious really...
rossbosscat 2 years ago 17
Well officials claim that you mustn't use a cut and shut car because it would split into two pieces during a crash.
I guess then that the arguement against cut and shut is false since 99% of small cars have the same effect.
Therefore its no different to drive a cut and shut to a normal car then?
